Art is Competitive--Devon

What is exactly is “Art”? Art is an expression, art is subjective, and art is a skill. Art is knowledge, creativity, and Art is imagination. The concept of “Art” is a one that goes by many definitions, harboring many different meanings for many different people. Some think of art as the stereotypical activities of painting and drawing, some see art as performance or entertainment, to others art is feeling and expression. By dictionary definition, “Art” according to Merriam-Webster Art is a skill acquired by experience, study, or observation or the conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic objects. According to Dictionary.com, “Art” is the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance. Now, considering these three denotations of the word, can art truly be all of these subjective meanings given by others? Yes, it can. As proven by these two definitions art is many things, and being that art is something that can be created, it is and can be personal to those who create it. That personal element within the art that people create opens the door for Art to become more than the textbook definition that is it under. Art can become whatever the producer sees it as. As an artist myself, my art has always been important and intimate to me, and forms to become even more as I continue on my artistic journey. This then begs the question, what is my definition of “Art”? To me, Art is everything previously mentioned, and then something else. I believe that Art is and can also be seen as being competitive.

As an artist myself, I strive to become better and better, the absolute best I can be. This hunger and drive to grow as an artist are what creates the competitiveness that I believe is a part of Art. The world is full of artists just like me who are doing things similar to me and are trying to obtain the same successes and positions that I am. As an artist working to enter in the Animation industry, the most competitive industry of them all, my craft now has to turn into something competitive. I must work harder and push further than others to solidify my spot. This opinion though, of art being competitive is still very unpopular. Many in the art community or art world believe that art is all about personal growth and not minding what anyone else is doing, sticking to just doing you and not comparing yourself to others. In any activity there will always be someone better or worse than you, this especially occurs in the arts. I agree with this wholeheartedly and believe it as truth. As a creator, you shouldn’t be worrying about what the next man is creating, only what you yourself are creating. But then what is my point? How can I believe in this but still have a competitive mindset to overcome my peers? I see it as so; when I view another artist who is in the same lane as myself, doing things relating to what I do, and even in relatively the same age range who are better than me, I get inspired. I get inspired to go the extra mile, put in the extra hour, and draw just that much more. In my mind, I tell myself “okay, if this person is already this skilled at this age, I have to push myself even harder to surpass them. Whether it is talent or skill.” Everyone is born with a certain amount of talent,
some more or less than others, but the skill and dedication are what keeps you. So if there is someone out there who possesses more talent than me, I’ve got to obtain more skill. If there is someone who possesses more skill than me than I most certainly have to obtain more skill. When I see these artists who are ahead of me I don’t view the situation as “I have to do what they do but better” or that I have to specifically compete with just them. I view the situation as, “Okay, this person is better than me, let me go ahead and grind just that much more and raise my standards a little.” There is still a bit of comparing here, but the effect isn’t as negative as comparing your art to someone else’s usually does.

With Art many times producers or creators put themselves into comfort zones, making art that is only the most fun or easiest. You do not improve this way. You improve by stepping out of your comfort zone and doing things you normally wouldn’t do or like. Being competitive helps with this. If someone sees one of their peers who is better than they are stepping out of their comfort zone and challenging themselves to do different things, then they themselves can be motivated to do the same. This is why being Competitive in artworks, and how art can be and is competitive. Art is just more of a friendly competition. At the end of the day, Art is many things and many things to many people, but I shall argue that art isn’t just expression, study, creativity, or imagination, Art is also competitive.

  3. I agree with everything you said art is, but I'm wondering if the competitiveness is the same thing as inspiration? Like are you really competing with other artists, or is it only inspiration between artists?

  18. In the beginning of this piece, I didn't understand the title of which how art is competitive. To me, I thought art was a creation, a piece with symbols that represents an individual's emotion. But now I see how art is competitive, where the emotion in a piece is judged by other individuals. Instead, art should be admired by all from little or lots of emotion placed into one piece. _ Amy Lau

I can tell that you motivate yourself to push to greater heights and striving to not only hold your own in the industry one day, but better yourself as an artist.

  26. I think that's an amazing mentality to keep in mind when facing the real world. I think that it's awesome that you don't isolate this philosophy solely to the field of artistry, but to the whole spectrum of living. It is a harsh truth accepting that there are those better than us, in every aspect of life, but as you mentioned above, this should not seem as a hindrance, but instead as inspiration to overcome your boundaries and overcome your yourself! Best of luck to a bright future ahead of you!

  27. It's interesting that you feel this way about the competitiveness of artists because I've sort of felt like this, too. I too am an artist, but in more ways than one, so i completely understand where you are coming from. Your abstract idea inspired me to look at my competitive side in a new and healthy way. I loved the repetition of the word "Art" because it stopped the reader from losing focus on your idea and grabbed their attention (well at least mine). I hope you don't lose this mentality and that you become the great artist you aspire to be in the future.

  31. I loved how you opened this piece with a question in which you answered literally then with your own experience. I agree that the definition of art is dependent on who chooses to define it. Competition truly is a driving force to make people do better especially in the discipline of art. Being able to work so diligently in this field is something not everyone can do at this age so I commend you for that. I admire your work and cannot wait to see what the future holds for you!

  39. I absolutely agree with what you said. Art comes in so many forms, and competitiveness is so apart of art but I don’t think it’s negative. I find it like a possible source of inspiration between artists. We inspire each other to work even harder and improve our craft. It can be an unhealthy and healthy thing. I would ask you what’s your view on that?

  45. Everything you described is literally exactly what I'm going through as a musician. Being a musician, another form of "art", I too have to strive to be above my peers to solidify a spot in the oh-so-competitive and unrelenting music industry. When I see young prodigies who have skill that far surpass my own (especially at young ages) it pushes me to practice harder. It also inspires learning and growth. Rather than compete out of jealousy or selfishness, it sparks my curiosity -- I seek knowledge from others and strike conversation, etc. As competitive as Art is, Art is a community nonetheless.

P.S. Good luck in your endeavors! If there's anyone who can make it in the Arts, its you.

  47. My favorite thing you said was ".. art has always been ..... intimate to me" Because it is true. Art, most perfectly defined in correlation to the artist, is intimate. It is personal, it is complex, it is simple, it is scandalous, it is sacred, it is everything. I think you were on-point in that sense. However, when describing it as "competitive" I feel as though it was explained too naturally.. and it made me wonder: Is art naturally competitive, or did we make it that way? Is art SUPPOSED to be competitive, or did we ruin it by making it so? I'm interested to hear your thoughts on this.

    With Respect, Connor

  48. Your introduction was very artful (no pun intended) in that it perfectly set up the rest of your piece. Technical aspects aside, I agree with you completely - I think that when viewed and put to use the right way, competition in art can be very beneficial. I agree that it is so vital to step outside of your comfort zone as an artist, otherwise your art may become boring an you may even be unmotivated to continue any longer.

  51. I like your piece because you explain that art does not have a set definition because it's interpreted as well as executed in many different ways, it all depends on how the person chooses to bring their artistic vision to life. You also made your piece intimate which allowed your readers to connect with you and understand your passion for art, and i really liked that element! I felt like i got to understand art from a fellow artist point of view which overshadowed the stereotypical view we have on art & artist. Continue your art!
