Love
Valentine's Day only comes once a year. It is the 14th of February, which happens to be today's date. Valentine's Day is a day completely centered on the idea of love. As I am sitting here, on Valentine's Day, I can't help but wonder "what is love exactly and why there is a whole day based on it?"
The definition of "love" is "a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person". This makes perfect sense, but everyone seems to have their own definition. I personally believe that married couples possess the strongest form of love. When a couple gets married, they vow to spend the rest of their lives together and be faithful to one another as long as they both shall live. To decide to get married is a very big decision that is completely based on love. Two people will only get married if they know that they love each other. They know that they love each other when they feel that their partner is the only person that they need for the rest of their life; if everyone in the world was to disappear except for them self and one other person, their partner would be the one other person they choose. This person probably understands them and treats them better than anyone else in their life. Love within a married couple is more emotional than physical. Marriage is the ultimate proof that a man loves a woman, which means that he doesn't have to prove his love to her anymore because she knows he does and there is no question that he does. At this point, he just needs to remind her often, so she continues to feel loved because women are emotional human beings and need to be reminded often. This kind of love is very different than the kind of love that a younger couple possesses for one another.
Although they may claim that they love each other, a relationship between a younger man and a younger woman probably hasn't reached a point in which they are ready to get married. However, this doesn't mean that they don't love each other. These two people are probably committed to one another and believe that their partner is the only one they want to be with. This is just a different form of love. Unlike a married couple, love between a younger couple is both physical and emotional. There is an emotional connection between these two people, which is why they are together and why they love each other; however, a woman in this kind of relationship constantly needs to be reminded that her man loves her. Usually, if he loves her enough, the man won't have a problem with this. The woman will want to constantly be reminded of how he feels about her and why. Not only will she want to hear that he loves her, but she will also want him to "show" that he loves her. She will obviously want him to buy her things and take her places. This kind of love is common, but isn't always strong enough to last. If the love is strong, it will ultimately lead to marriage; which will give the man a break probably after a few months.
The last form of love is natural. It occurs within a family. Family members love each other. I know there are circumstances in which family members don't love each other, but I am not referring to those situations because I am talking about love. People that are related to each other naturally love one another (I am mostly referring to immediate family). Although family members may fight and be mad at each other, they are still family. In the end, they will always be there for each other and make sacrifices for one another, if needed, because that is what family is for, and that is true love. It is true love because no matter what happens and no matter what is said, they are always going to be family and family is always going to be there for each other.
This brings me back to my initial question, "what is love exactly and why is there a whole day based on it?" Love is so many different things, feelings, emotions, and actions; but, ultimately, it is a part of life, and it is only fitting that there be a whole day based on it so everyone can identify their idea of love.

Johnston--The Thing

I suddenly awoke in the dark room where I had initially fallen asleep. I sensed her presence and I believe that is what caused my growing fear and high level of panic. She was getting closer. WHY here? WHY now? Before I had fallen asleep I had I locked all the doors to this “safe room” thinking that it would actually provide some sort of protection, but now I realize how wrong I was. I started hearing slow, approaching footsteps on the other side of the door. I knew I had to get out of this place FAST.
After putting on my survival backpack, I ran to the opposite end of the room where there was a door, an exit! As I unlocked all of the deadbolts and locks, I started to hear her dreadful, deathly voice. The repetitive guttural noises of what was left of her vocal cords advanced quickly, but on the bright side the THING, her, could only slowly walk. SO MANY LOCKS, they are doing more harm than good right now! I finally got the darn door open just in time! As I started to run I turned around and caught sight of her walking through the door as if it were nothing. Her pale, white skin and black, lifeless eyes were terrifyingly grim. The white, bloodstained gown, and seemingly endless amount of black hair were the worst part.
I ran as fast as I could through the door into a dark, dimly lit hallway that was illuminated by moonlight through window panes . I turned around briefly while I was still running to see that she had stopped pursuing me, but her voice was still there. I knew that this was very, very bad and looked above me towards the ceiling. There she was, crawling towards me slowly while her hair hung down. In utter panic, I continued to run, this time even faster.
There was another door to my right this time and I gladly took the chance to separate myself from my approaching doom. Hiding was obviously not an option because she always knows where I am at all times. The only thing to do is run. Fighting a curse is impossible. Distancing myself from her is the best I can do. Through this door, I found an office, a dead end. I knew this was the end for me, but in desperation I closed the door, locked it, and blocked it with a desk in hope of ever living to see another day. I pulled out a six shot revolver out of my bag just in case.
Footsteps and her voice approaching the other side of the door, I readied my gun and aimed for the center of the door. Firing five shots, I yelled, “I DON’T WANT TO DIE!!!”.  Her voice was gone, I closed my eyes and started to silently cry in a corner of the enclosed room. I did not want to see what was about to happen to me.

Visual Inception
Have you ever met somebody who didn’t look their age? What about reading something differently than what it actually said? Through our eyes, we send signals to the brain to memorize and recognize different surroundings and people. However, sometimes we can tend to perceive something in the wrong way or in various ways. For example, visually seeing strangers, we make assumptions that create false information as to who they truly are. “HI! What college do you attend?” “Oh, I’m a freshman.” “WHAT. YOU LOOK LIKE YOU’RE IN COLLEGE! YOU LOOK SO TALL AND MATURE AND, etc...” “Lol. Yeah I get that a lot.” These goofball conversations are all fun and games but really make you wonder “Why did I see him/her like that?”
Another visual inception that is widely controversial today is the understanding of religious texts from The Bible. Throughout history, our great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great………..ancestors have always tried to interpret and share their understandings of this great, great, great, great, great, great……..REALLY OLD text. Even up to today, we still ponder upon said old text and relate them with our lives. However, because of differences in interpretation, many religions have branched like the Orthodox and Anglican Churches from the book. These branches visually perceive the text in a way where they felt it was either different from the original meaning or disagree with the teachings from it.
To just sum it all up, our eyes are evil beings and are the reason we can’t be like care bears or power rangers. Overall, perception has always been an interesting thought. Why is it that we see people as something else? Why do we read the same text but understand it in different ways? I guess it comes down to seeing further than what is seen. Visual inception? No, overthinking.
