The year 2023 did not start off as joyful and welcoming for me as one expects to say

goodbye to the past year and greet the new year. Almost a couple months ago, my family and I

experienced one of toughest times together. The day after Christmas, December 26, 2022, my

parents, my brother, and I left at the crack of dawn to Glamis. In case you don’t already know,

Glamis is the Imperial Sand Dunes, where people go to camp and go off-roading in ATVs and

sand cars. After a lot of indecisiveness about going this last year, my family decided we would

go to Glamis with some of our family and friends. My family owns a Can-Am and a quad that we

have taken out riding many times. Earlier in the year, my brother sold his quad and began

working on my dad’s old banshee. The difference between the two quads was that my dad’s

banshee was quite bigger, faster, and stronger. The first day in Glamis, I was in the can-am

riding behind my brother on his quad to Sunset Hill, a high dune that is challenging to make it up

to, and Nick was riding his quad amazing. The whole trip, I kept telling my mom how proud I was

of how good he was riding…until the accident happened.

On the third day of our trip, my brother, Nick, was in a crash on his banshee. It was a

nice, chilly day and around noon, the people at our camp decided we would take a ride to

Vendor’s Row. My mom, my brother, my cousin Kalee, and I got in our Can-Am. During the ride,

our belt had broken and we were stuck in the middle of the dunes. The friends we were riding

with tried to fix it, but they did not have all the right tools and needed to go back to camp. A

couple of men, Chris and Jason, needed to go back to camp for the tools and told us that some

people must go back to camp and stay there so we would have less weight in our Can-Am. I, of

course, was going to stay out there with my mom since it was our car they were fixing, and then

no one else wanted to go back. Nick, trying to be helpful, says, “I will go back with them in their

Can-Am, then follow them back on my quad.” In one car, it was Jason and Chris, and in the

other car, it was my older cousin Derrick, his friend, and Nick. As they took off, a bunch of us

were hanging out in the dunes just waiting for them to come back.

After waiting for about 30 minutes, the guys roll up in their Can-Ams, but my brother is

not with them. Immediately, my mom was asking, “Where is Nicholas? He said he was following

you guys back on his quad?”

Jason responded with, “I don’t know. He was taking too long to get ready, so we just left.”

Then, shrugged his shoulders.

My mom was already curious as to why he wouldn't come because Nick always wants to

help, and he definitely would not leave us out there as they are working on OUR car. Eventually,

the car was fixed, and we headed back to camp. I rode in someone else’s sandrail and my mom

took a separate Can-Am. As we pull up to camp, I can see my mom get out before me and my

other older cousin, Vince, talking to her with a worried look on his face. All I hear is my brother’s

name mentioned, so I start getting out the rail and then I hear, “Nick was in an accident..”, from

a voice I did not even think to recognize. At first, I thought he might have just been a little hurt,

but right away I looked at my phone and saw 5 missed calls from my Dad and then I heard “He

is in the ER.”

I looked up at my mom, who was on the phone immediately, and just knew. I just felt my

heart stop and I knew something was so wrong. We did not have service out in the dunes, so no

one could get a hold of us. I was just in complete shock and was so scared. Vince told us, “I

don’t have much details, but Nick crashed on his quad, alone, and someone found him, brought

him back, and Jay (my Dad) took him to the ER.” My dad had just recently had reconstructive

shoulder surgery and he was not even supposed to be driving. What was supposed to be an

hour and half drive to the ER from Glamis to Brawley, was a 30 minutes drive for my Dad. There

was no choice for my Dad when your child’s life is in danger. So, right away, Vince offered to

drive us to the ER. My mom, my cousin Kalee, and I got in his truck and we took off to the ER.

Our cousin Aubree, who is close in age with Nick, went with my brother to the ER and I will

never forget that Vince told us that Aubree said, “I am going with Nick Dad!! I don’t care” and

Vince knew to let her go with her best friend.

Sitting in the truck on the drive, I was literally shaking and everything in my body felt

overwhelmed, yet so empty at the same time. My mom was trying to figure out details of his

condition from my Dad, but on the phone he was very unstable and having trouble talking to my

mom. I saw my mom trying to stay composed as much as she could and I was so scared. Vince

began to tell us that Nick was trying to catch up to the guys who were still close in distance, to

help fix the Can-Am, but they took off without him. Just about less than a mile from our camp,

Nick went off the first dune and people across from that dune were able to see him. Those were

all the details we could understand from what happened at the time.

We pulled up to the ER in Brawley, and they would only let my mom in to see Nick. After

about 15 minutes, my Dad was able to switch with me so I could see my brother, since there

were only two visitors at a time allowed. My heart immediately sank when I saw my brother. His

face was full of blood all over, with sand stuck to his whole body, teeth missing, cuts and bruises

all over, and completely out of it. He was hooked up to a bunch of machines, with wires attached

in so many places. Nick’s mouth was completely busted and broken. I grabbed his hand, and

after only a few seconds of peace, he sat up so quickly and began vomiting blood everywhere

on the floor. I had never seen anything like that, except in movies, he was literally projectile

vomiting a thick, pure stream of red blood. Then a second after, he did it again. My mom started

calling for the nurse and about 5 people came running in. I was completely freaked out and it

was so overwhelming with everyone running in, so I ran out of the room. I could barely walk ten

steps out because I started crying so bad. There were some people around waiting and they all

just looked at me as I stood there crying and trying to breathe. I will never forget the feeling of

being so helpless and scared. Once I was able to walk and catch my breath, I found the nearest

exit and it turned out to take me to the front of the ER. I saw my Dad sitting on the bench, I went

to him, and just started bawling in my dad’s arms. He was holding me crying, then I told him

what I just witnessed. The way my dad was hugging me, made me feel so safe.

After a while, we decided that I would go back to camp with my cousins, and pack up our

trailer. With the most luckiest coincidence, my grandparents and my tios happened to be in

Palm Springs at the casino, which was only two hours away from us. They drove from there to

Brawley to pick up the trailer and switch cars. By this time, it was late evening, when they

arrived. They picked up my dad’s truck at the ER and drove over with my Dad to hook up the

trailer. The past couple hours before that, I had been packing up everything, being helpful as

much as I could, since I could not be with my brother. After we hooked up the trailer, we went

back to the ER and my uncle left us their car and they went home with our truck and trailer. We

were still completely lost on what was going to happen with Nick.

Nick was able to tell my parents the story of what happened. Nick says that he was

getting on his quad, then the guys took off and since they only went a little up ahead, he thought

he could catch them. He was going pretty fast and when he came up to the first dune, he looked

over for a second, but was already going down. He flew on his quad 45 feet in the air and

crashed…When he gained consciousness, he saw the bike was on top of him, crushing his

legs. Thankfully, he was wearing riding boots that go up high and was able to slip out of them.

Reminder, he is all alone. With all the adrenaline pumping through his veins, he ran to the top of

the dune and began waving for a second, then just collapsed at the top. Strangers from the

camp in front of the dune saw him and immediately hopped in their rail to help him. Nick told

them where our camp was and they drove him over. He stepped out of the car, and again just

collapsed. From the time he crashed, blood just kept running out his mouth. I still cannot believe

that he was so strong enough to get up and fight for his life on adrenaline. I asked him how he

was able to run up that hill and he said, “I had no other choice. For a second, I didn’t know if I

could fight, but I did anyway.”

The doctors let us know that he had broken his jaw on both sides, missing teeth, may

have serious brain damage, and may have internal problems. The ER were completely lost on

what they were going to do, since they did not specialize in anything pediatrics trauma. The four

of us spent the entire night, taking turns in the room with Nick and sleeping in the car. Although,

none of us actually got sleep. After being told countless times through the night that he was

going to be transported, first it was Loma Linda, then San Diego, then Phoenix, he was finally

sent to San Diego by 8 a.m. From the moment I found out about the crash to the day we got into

San Diego, my life was completely stopped and focused on whether my brother was going to be

okay. It was some of the longest days of my life.

The same night we got to San Diego Rady’s Children Hospital, he went into surgery for

his jaw. They wired his mouth completely shut. So, for the last two months, my brother has been

on a liquid diet, drinking all of his meals through a straw. We spent half of our winter break at the

hospital in San Diego. The whole week, I was not allowed to visit my brother in his room, so I

saw him after a couple days when he felt strong enough to get out of bed into the wheelchair

and be pushed down to see me. The night of New Year’s Eve, I saw him and he was completely

heart broken. New Year’s Eve is one of our family’s favorite nights as we all spend it together.

That night, my Aunt came to pick me up and take me home. We went to my other uncle’s house

(Yes, I know I have a billion aunts, uncles, and cousins) for their NYE party and I had a horrible

time. I missed my family, but all I kept telling myself was that I should be thankful for my brother

being alive.

Nicholas is the strongest, most brave man I know and he is only 14 years old. He may

not know how much I love him, but as I get ready to leave for college in New York, I cherish

having him by my side always and I thank God for him being here, alive, well, and happy here

with us. My family went through one of the toughest times together and I learned just how much

we need each other.

Yearning for Yesterday--Freya

The sun's radiant beams shone down upon the endless fields of golden dandelions as a

young girl ran through them without a concern. Her hair glistens in resemblance to the

dandelions in its full luminosity. Her dress touches the tips of the flowers as she twirls around so

blissfully. She then pauses and puts her hand gently above her head to block the sun from

blinding her. As she looks up at the sky, the little girl can’t help but notice the ethereal view.

Wildlife filled with color and vibrancy, it struck her that this was her life. Out in the fields having a

picnic with her loving family surrounded by a sight once in a lifetime, it made her heart spark

with a feeling of homesickness for a home she already did have. It was the feeling of

overwhelming contentment and pleasure.

The girl’s father picked her up, swinging her around in the air with a cheerful smile as the

girl laughed in pure delight. Her mother watched from a distance while sitting on a floral picnic

blanket along with all the other picnic necessities. Her mother watched as the two individuals

she loved most in the world filled the air with euphoria.

However, the camera panned out, revealing a group of people sitting in front of a

television screen. They were glued to the screen, seeing something different they’ve never seen

before. Dressed in white and gray attire with blank expressions worn, they contrasted the very

video they were so intrigued in. It was all so new to them.

“Beautiful isn’t it?” said a voice from the back behind the couch they were propped on.

They turned to a man in black, his eyes filled with darkness and the longing for life, whilst trying

to calculate their thoughts.

“Sir, may I ask, what are we watching?” said one of the people from the group.

The man awaiting the question, smiled with a forced grin. “This was dated long ago, known as

the home we all once knew,” he said. “A time when people ran through fields of dandelions

surrounded by sunlight and raw nature. Where people laughed and played out in the sun with

bliss. This time we can never get back, but as you see, this is the closest we can get to reliving

those lost decades.”

The man elaborated more on the different scenes on the screen showing from bustling

cities to peaceful sunsets on the beach. His voice grew more passionately as he talked more

about the old Earth. He expanded on his wishes to visit other cultures and different parts of the

world it portrayed. But from next to him another man with attire of social class, cleared his throat

causing the man to retract back to his “emotionless” state.

The people looked at each other with confusion and disgust at the idea, and then back at

the screen with such curiosity. They had heard of stories of the past, of how Earth was

destroyed by humans themselves. They were told that it was a dark and dangerous place where

illnesses and problems were always imminent. A place they dare not to ponder on.

But here on the screen, was something so different from what they were told. It was

actually breathtaking. They started to fantasize running through fields of dandelions and

laughing and playing with their loved ones. The group was taught just like the rest of society to

not feel such emotions for meaningless items and views such as flowers and sunsets. Yet, they

can’t help but feel homesick, longing for the home they never had.

How to--Makayla

I have always gotten a lot of creative inspiration from my mom. From a very young age, I have

always watched her participate in crafts at any event we attend, do crafts at home, including

scrapbooking, making hair accessories, making jewelry, etc. I remember sitting down with her

one night while she was making me hair clips and we were just watching a movie and I was

helping her to choose what kind of styles and patterns to choose for the hair clips, it is one of my

favorite memories that I have of her and I. Now, personally I am not exactly the most crafty

person, but I do love making my own jewelry and making jewelry for others. My style of jewelry

making has definitely grown and improved over the years. I don't remember when exactly I

started making my own jewelry, but I always remember watching my mom make hers and just

sitting there in awe wondering how she has the creativity to make something so incredible. She

has taught me everything I need to know when making my jewelry, from the right tools to the

color palette of beads to use. So through many many trials, here I am, sharing my knowledge of

how to make a necklace and I just want to thank my mother for teaching me something I will

carry on for the rest of my life. And I hope that you will also learn something new and try to

make your own jewelry as well!

Tools Needed:

-Wire (it does not matter what size, choose what makes you most comfortable)

*for this necklace I will be using 0.30mm

-Jewelry Pliers (round needle and nose pliers - doesn´t matter which you use for this)

-Wire cutter

-Bead crimping plier

-Crimp beads

-Regular beads

-Clasp and jump ring

Step 1:

Select which beads you want and start placing them in the pattern desired. (This step might take

a while and that is okay! Do what makes you happy, so get comfortable, play some music and

just have fun!)

Step 2:

Measure the wire around your neck to the desired length. Then add on a few extra inches to the

wire (this is crucial for later). Now cut the wire (with your wire cutters)

*note- only use your wire cutters for wire, otherwise they will get damaged and it will be a

struggle trying to cut wire.

Step 3:

Start placing the beads on your cut wire.

*Tip: get a clamp to place on the end of one side of the wire so your beads don´t fall off by

accident.

(I made this mistake and lost half of my work and had to restart -but mistakes like that are okay!)

Step 4:

Once you have all of your beads placed on the wire now you grab your crimp beads and crimp

plier. This step is the trickiest, so I will try my absolute best to explain thoroughly. You will also

need an ending clasp and jump ring.

Here is what they look like:

Place one of the crimp beads on one end of the wire, along with either the clasp or the jump

ring. (This is why you needed to add on a few inches to the wire when measuring)

Step 5:

Now take the end of the wire and wrap around the ring and place it back through the crimp

bead. Another tip: put the wire through some beads as well to secure the ending more.

Here is what that should look like:

Now, pull the wire tight, but not too tight. Make the ending snug. Once you do that you are ready

for the next step.

Step 6:

For this step, you will need your crimping pliers. To make sure you have the right pliers, check

the tip. There should be two holes. Once you have this, take the pliers and lift up the end of the

necklace. Remember the crimp bead you placed on the end? Now take the pliers and grab it

with the lower hole.

Squeeze the pliers tight, flatten out the crimp bead.

Now once flattened, place the bead through the first hole of the crimp pliers. Grab the folded

ends of the bead, and squeeze tight again. This will create another fold. Once that is completed,

just go around squeezing the bead to secure it more.

Repeat this step on the other side of the necklace. Now, you can cut off the excess wire sticking

out.

Congratulations! You have now made your necklace! I hope that you try this out and let me

know how it goes!

How To: Be an Artist--Annie

Art can be defined as a form of expression and imagination used widely throughout the world.

Art reaches many people and reflects the thoughts and actions of everyone around us. It has

many types, forms, and there are many ways to be an artist. In this case, I am talking about the

physical form, specifically drawing and painting. Art is a huge part of my life, as I have been

drawing since I was a little child. It has become a very therapeutic coping mechanism for me

when going through tough situations. Over the years, I have practiced the art of painting and

drawing and have used it to express myself and share a piece of myself with the world. Next

year, I am going to go to art school and hope to fulfill my dream of being a full time artist. Now, it

is your turn to learn how to be an artist.

Step 1: Find Inspiration

The first thing you’re going to do is find your subject or inspiration behind your potential piece of

art. An inspiration can be anything from a person to an animal, or even a place or feeling. Many

artists use art to express emotions and experiences. Having something that inspires you to

create drives the motivation to start.

Step 2: Get in the Right Mindset

It is very important to understand that art is very subjective and that the idea of “good” is up to

interpretation. Especially when practicing something new, you will have to learn that the end

product may not measure up to what you may have envision at the beginning. Art is not about

the finished piece, but the process of what goes on in between. Anyone and everyone can be

an artist. Getting into the mindset of enjoying the process, rather than being “good” makes for a

good experience.

Step 3: Pick Your Medium

The next step is to choose how you’d like to create your art. Mediums come in many different

forms and varieties so this is a personal preference. Watercolor, markers, graphite, paint,

colored pencils, and oil pastels are a few well known mediums, but you can use absolutely

anything to show your creativity.

Step 4: Find Your Canvas

Step four is to find your canvas- find what or where you’d like to create your art. The most

popular choice, especially when painting, is a cotton canvas which can be found at any of your

local arts and craft stores. But, art can be created anywhere and on anything. Many artists paint

on walls or wood or just anything they can get their hands on. To start, I would recommend a

simple piece of paper. But for this tutorial, I’ll be referencing a cotton canvas.

Step 5: Begin to Create

Once you have your inspiration, the right mindset, the supplies based on your chosen canvas

and medium, you are ready to create! The first stroke or mark you make is well known to be the

hardest, mostly because of fear. One tip I like to do before painting is writing something on the

canvas first. It can be anything from motivating to just writing your current emotions. Art can be

very therapeutic if you let it. After writing something, I take a color and paint the canvas all over,

covering up the words. When doing this, you get over the fear of ruining a blank canvas and

only you know what’s underneath your amazing piece of art. Art has no timeline on how long it

needs to take. Many people spend years on one piece or just minutes. There’s no pressure

when it comes to releasing your creativity.

Step 6: Be Proud of What You’ve Created

The last and final step is to admire what you’ve created! Creating any type of art is a huge

accomplishment. After creating something, it can be very easy to go back and critique things

you should’ve done better. Having the right mindset circles back here. Although reflecting back

on work is used to learn how to improve, ultimately be proud of what you’ve done.

Having the passion and talent to become an artist will inspire others to release their emotions in

their own artistic way. I have found much joy in making art and I hope I was able to pass along

my experience to any reader who chooses to try something new and create! Remember to put

in your best effort and not be afraid to make mistakes!

How To Falscara Lashes--Scarlet

For all my girls out there that use false eyelashes or are wasting your money on eyelash

extensions! Yes, eyelash extensions may be convenient and have you looking cute and ready

for a week or two but once they start falling out, you go through the awkward spider lashes

phase. Not only are they expensive to maintain but they also ruin your natural lashes as well. As

well as false eyelashes which use all that nasty glue that collects bacteria into your eyelashes.

Instead, what I do is falscara lashes. Which is basically using false eyelashes or eyelash

clusters to give the extension effect and they last you at least 3-6 days in a week. I was so tired

of paying every two weeks a hundred dollars or more for extensions. And once you had

extensions you can’t go back to natural because all of your natural lashes are being pulled out.

But with the falscara lashes all you need is an oil based remover to remove the lashes and the

glue without pulling on anything. In order to give off the extension look the falscara clusters are

applied under the lash line instead of at the top so they almost look like your natural lashes. You

may have seen this many times on the social media app Tik Tok. Specifically from the tik toker

Yasmine Topacio which is who introduced it first on tik tok. She is basically a pro at these false

eyelash hacks and sponsors many brands such as Lashify and Kiss for their lash clusters and

lash glue. I love anything that is involved with beauty. Which is why doing my own lashes

interested me so much. Beauty these days is expensive to keep up with and learning how to do

all these essential beauty things yourself I believe has made life so much easier. No

appointments to make or people to tip. As well as doing my own lashes I am beginning to learn

how to do my own nails. Of course it is not the same as going to a salon to get your nails or

lashes done but it gives exactly what it needs to give for the small period of time.

Tools Needed:

- False Eyelashes or Lash Clusters

- Scissors (used to cut the false lashes into proper amount of clusters to fit eye shape)

- Lash tweezers (easy use to apply lashes at the proper angle)

- Falscara Glue

- Spooly brush (Brush out and separate natural lashes from falscara glue)

- Sealer (to avoid stickiness of eyelids and bottom lashes after lashes are done)

- Mini Fan (to dry the glue)

Steps:

- Go to any drug store and buy your favorite pair of eyelashes, one of two pairs if you want

the full look will do fine. (You can also buy lash clusters on amazon which are already

pre cut and sized for you)

- Cut the false eyelashes into 5 parts or however many parts needed to fit your entire lash

line. The reason why it needs to be cut is because it will stick to the lashes better

individually and leave less weight on your natural lashes.

- Apply the falscara glue onto your lashes but only apply about once or twice or else the

glue will start to get clumpy

- Let glue dry for a minute or so and give it time to get tacky. The reason for this is so that

when you are plying your lashes the glue is already somewhat dry and will be able to

stick easier because it is at the perfect amount of tackiness (not required but

recommended)

- For the first 2 lashes in the inner corner of your eyes add a small amount of lash glue to

the band just because they have to stick to smaller amount of lashes making it easier to

fall off

- Apply the 2 front lashes under your lash line right next to one another

- Using your lash tweezers grab each individual lash at a time and apply a small amount

of glue to the lash band but NOT the lash itself for the other 3 pieces. I do this so that the

lashes have a better chance of staying longer and feel more secure (most people don’t

apply it to the lash band but I recommend it for longer lasting lashes)

- Once all lashes are applied, use a spooley to brush out your natural lashes behind the

false lashes so your lashes don’t look clumpy and stuck together by glue

- Lastly, apply the sealer which should harden the glue and avoid your lashes from

sticking together when you blink and turn on the mini fan to help speed up the drying

process
