The sun's radiant beams shone down upon the endless fields of golden dandelions as a
young girl ran through them without a concern. Her hair glistens in resemblance to the
dandelions in its full luminosity. Her dress touches the tips of the flowers as she twirls around so
blissfully. She then pauses and puts her hand gently above her head to block the sun from
blinding her. As she looks up at the sky, the little girl can’t help but notice the ethereal view.
Wildlife filled with color and vibrancy, it struck her that this was her life. Out in the fields having a
picnic with her loving family surrounded by a sight once in a lifetime, it made her heart spark
with a feeling of homesickness for a home she already did have. It was the feeling of
overwhelming contentment and pleasure.
The girl’s father picked her up, swinging her around in the air with a cheerful smile as the
girl laughed in pure delight. Her mother watched from a distance while sitting on a floral picnic
blanket along with all the other picnic necessities. Her mother watched as the two individuals
she loved most in the world filled the air with euphoria.
However, the camera panned out, revealing a group of people sitting in front of a
television screen. They were glued to the screen, seeing something different they’ve never seen
before. Dressed in white and gray attire with blank expressions worn, they contrasted the very
video they were so intrigued in. It was all so new to them.
“Beautiful isn’t it?” said a voice from the back behind the couch they were propped on.
They turned to a man in black, his eyes filled with darkness and the longing for life, whilst trying
to calculate their thoughts.
“Sir, may I ask, what are we watching?” said one of the people from the group.
The man awaiting the question, smiled with a forced grin. “This was dated long ago, known as
the home we all once knew,” he said. “A time when people ran through fields of dandelions
surrounded by sunlight and raw nature. Where people laughed and played out in the sun with
bliss. This time we can never get back, but as you see, this is the closest we can get to reliving
those lost decades.”
The man elaborated more on the different scenes on the screen showing from bustling
cities to peaceful sunsets on the beach. His voice grew more passionately as he talked more
about the old Earth. He expanded on his wishes to visit other cultures and different parts of the
world it portrayed. But from next to him another man with attire of social class, cleared his throat
causing the man to retract back to his “emotionless” state.
The people looked at each other with confusion and disgust at the idea, and then back at
the screen with such curiosity. They had heard of stories of the past, of how Earth was
destroyed by humans themselves. They were told that it was a dark and dangerous place where
illnesses and problems were always imminent. A place they dare not to ponder on.
But here on the screen, was something so different from what they were told. It was
actually breathtaking. They started to fantasize running through fields of dandelions and
laughing and playing with their loved ones. The group was taught just like the rest of society to
not feel such emotions for meaningless items and views such as flowers and sunsets. Yet, they
can’t help but feel homesick, longing for the home they never had.
What intrigued me to this piece is the dystopian you've created where Earth is gone and humans have no sense of joy or happiness. However, what I have to ask if this is a commentary on how people spend too much time on television as well as criticizing pollution? I'm more curious if I'm right than anything else. I liked your story overall.
