The quality of womanliness. To many, it’s the curve in one’s hips or the high octave of
their voice. Dresses, pink, high heels and an hourglass figure are the things people most often
associate with feminine things. From birth, females are told that to be respected we must act
feminine and comply to these standards. But in truth, femininity is not the color pink, the process
of putting on mascara or even being a woman. You can be feminine in your actions and
tendencies without wearing dresses or nail polish. Femininity can lie within nature, objects and
men. It is not a label but a quality that anyone or anything can have despite their gender or
material qualities. Mother nature, the earth itself is one of the most highly respected things in the
world. It is the basis of all living creatures and is responsible for the changes of everyone's
environment. Mother nature plays a pivotal role within every living things life. Nature is
described as a woman because of its raw beauty and its tendency to bring solitude to the things
that surround itself. The hugs from the swirling wind, the joy from the vibrant flowers and the
protection of the towering mountains represent the similar compassion and love that mothers
and women naturally give. And although femininity is one of the most beautiful and raw qualities
to exist, people often look down upon it. Feminine things are sadly described as fragile, weak
and inadequate. The same way one can look at the most beautiful sunflower and call it ugly
because of its ability to lose its petals. People tell bad baseball players that they “throw like a
girl” because being feminine in today's society is not amiable or seen as a sign of strength. For
centuries, women were not allowed to vote or participate in any physical career because of this
stereotype. It took until the year 1917 for the government to allow women into the military
because their feminine weakness impaired them from fighting for our country. To me, femininity
does not equate to being fragile or easily broken. To be feminine is to be strong even when
everyone believes you are weak. It's the strength that lies within the physical and mental ability
it takes for a human body to create another living being, the courage it takes to stand their
ground through times of discrimination, and the warmth of a mother's heart towards any child.
The essence of being a woman is not defined by the weaknesses that others see us as but by
the phenomenal qualities that many chose to overlook. Maya Angelou once said ”You may
shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your
hatefulness,But still, like air, I’ll rise.” I believe that the most honorable quality of feminine people
is their ability to rise in despite of society's attempt to sink them. To represent the quality of
femininity is not a shameful thing but a quality that one should wear with honor and pride for it
resembles raw beauty, compassion and undeniable strength.

This is a beautifully written piece that criticizes societal views of women. I like how you use specific examples to prove this while also showing how it is wrong. I absolutely agree with you and love that you used this platform to address such an important topic that is often overlooked.
ReplyDeleteThis piece was very well written, I enjoyed reading this piece being feminine doesn't just include the appearance of a woman but the qualities within her. This was inspiring and powerful!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this piece! The way you were able to describe something that is so often disregarded was very powerful. Also, your examples were very relatable.

Great piece! I never thought of femininity that way. I agree that society today sees one feminine side as weak but in our own minds we see ourselves as powerful and unique individuals through femininity. - Amy Lau
ReplyDeleteAs a female, this was piece was both inspiring and truthful. It exposed the gender inequalities present in our society and described how women are often labeled as "weak." Despite describing these hardships, you were still uplifting and encouraged women to embrace this label and prove them wrong. A beautiful piece. -Chloe Munar
ReplyDeleteAs a woman and feminist who has trouble finding her voice, especially in defending women from the sexist comments we hear everyday, this was freeing to read. I also enjoyed how you mentioned femininity can be in behavior, because men should understand that they can be feminine, and sometimes they should. Men often shame other men who aren't constantly "masculine" (which sometimes just means sexist and violent- that's another conversation). Thank you for this piece, it was nice to be reminded of my strength today.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your piece and how you used everyday examples that everyone is able to relate to as a way to prove your point. Also, I applaud you for bringing light to such an important topic, especially in today’s society, that may not be fully understood by everyone. -Taylor Clayton
ReplyDeleteThis was very well written.I enjoyed how you you really described feminism and how it is usually described in a negative light but you made it positive. Great Job!!!-Jesse Jauregui
ReplyDeleteIn this day and age, people begin to mix up the true ideas of what is seen as "feminine" and I admire this piece because it shows the true meaning and power behind femininity. I can even say I was enlightened and see it from a different view after reading this!
ReplyDeletethis is important. you used the past and the present to prove your point: that women are unappreciated and underestimated STILL and this piece was published in perfect timing of the time’s up movement. amazing job
ReplyDeleteWOW! This piece is very inspiring to every girl out there in the world. I loved it from the very beginning.
ReplyDelete-Saulina Lopez
This is probably my favorite piece I've read on the blog. Your stance against the way femininity is looked down upon is very easily seen by a reader that you strongly believe in this topic. I also loved how you brought up the "like a girl" aspect because that is one of the things i hate most about how girls/women are perceived to be these weaklings. Your imagery was beautiful and really gave the picture of what feminine is and how it is actually perceived, how amazing.
ReplyDelete-Sasha Hodder
This piece is exactly what this modern day needed. I like many, am tired of people looking at the word feminine as a negative thing like being weak. Like people saying that feminine people need to "man up" to dismiss them as people or to dismiss emotions. The imagery was beautiful and really spoke truth of the meaning of being feminine. Truly an amazing piece.
ReplyDelete-Marycristy Garcia
Amazing piece. It was very well written and refreshing. I enjoyed reading this piece greatly; being feminine is so much more than external qualities. So powerful.
ReplyDeleteAkunna Chilaka
I really enjoyed reading this! I love how you took a word that is perceived as weak and small and brought to the light, its true strength and the beauty of being feminine overall.
ReplyDeleteI love how you counter the negative feelings towards being feminine with positive reflections of the strength of femininity. You take a strong stand against the idea that feminine is weak and your words are very inspiring. Great job!
ReplyDeleteI find this to be a very well written piece. I love the way that you made feminine objects more powerful by connecting them to mother nature. That is an outstanding comparison and I would have never thought of that.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed when you pointed out the stereo type of the word feminine relating to be weak and unmanly and countering it and saying that feminine doesn't mean female and doesn't need to have a negative connotative meaning.
ReplyDeleteI was also very impressed with supporting your statements with historical evidence.
-Lizzie Griffin
I love how you counter the negative things and feelings in life and just make it a great thing at the end of it all
ReplyDeleteI love that you said femininity isn't limited to just females and that you can find it in guys and nature too. -Genesis Mendoza
ReplyDeleteAmazing piece! This is so important and empowering. Your excellent use of description and historical references are so gracefully placed and contribute to what makes this piece so inspiring and beautiful.- Taren Thomas
ReplyDeleteI loved the comparison that you made between mother nature and women. this is what people need to hear nowadays. thank you kenzie- natalee d.
ReplyDeleteI really like this piece. The way you began talking about what things are 'feminine' and then to contradict it with mother nature, who does not possess the qualities stated as feminine was really interesting. It is very empowering. Good Job!
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautifully written critique on society's views of women, and how those views have evolved over time. The historical references really serve to strengthen the message.
ReplyDeleteAngela Orias
Kenzie,
ReplyDeleteThis piece was so beautifully written. I could not have written it better myself. It was amazing. First and foremost, I love how you used this platform to address such a common misconception in order to bring awareness to it. I agree with everything that this piece explains because to me, femininity is much more than nail polish, dresses, and the color pink. Femininity means strength and power. I'm so glad that someone discussed the importance of this common misconception that has been misunderstood for ages. This was very well-written and I'm so glad that you got to share it. Thank you and well done!
Lynelle Elhajjmoussa
Ugh this was so could I can't even, everything was so eloquently said and powerful. This honestly made my day to read as I used to struggle with these ideas of masculinity and femininity as I have always been asked if I play sports or that I should when what I actually do is play piano and cry at basically everything. At this point, I no longer care about what I fall under but still the way you talked about something as sensitive as this is really refreshing to see.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. Absolutely beautiful. This piece really reaches out to those that are insecure about themselves, especially with their gender identity. This really teaches the lesson of self confidence and embracing who you are as a feminine character, even when not physically seen as a female.
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful and so true. It combats the need to be masculine to be empowered with an acceptance that femininity can also make us strong, and you highlighted that not only women, but men and anyone else, can be feminine too, and that's nothing to be ashamed of. I also really appreciate your choice of quote! - Fatima J.
ReplyDeleteBeing a female I've always been told that I should act more feminine to live up to my supposed 'role', but your piece helps me realize the fact that femininity is not limited to a persons gender and we are free to express ourselves in whatever manner suits us. -Caitlin Fanning
ReplyDeleteWhat a captivating read. Being a guy and all, this topic is never discussed in my daily conversation and never really processed in my thoughts, so thank you for using this platform to bring up this idea.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing what many look past and bringing this topic to conversation. Your points were well stated and the quotes and evidence really are the cherries on top. Nice work!
ReplyDeleteI appreciated the quote from Maya Angelou. It helped sum your central idea that being feminine doesn't mean that one is weak. Even in today's society, people need to understand that both masculinity and femininity are present in a spectrum. One is not greater than the other, in fact, the work in tandem to shape one's personality.
ReplyDeleteThis piece was written in a way to sway or persuade any individual who thinks femininity is just a term pertained to the typical image of a women, but in the scheme of things, embodies a spectrum of objects and figures that have made a difference in the world as we know it. Great job
ReplyDelete-Timothy Miraflores
i really liked this piece. I never looked at femininity as i do now. I love how u explained it and gave examples as well!
ReplyDeleteI very much enjoyed how you emphasized the strong qualities someone feminine would have, and portray femininity as something to never be ashamed of. Your stand against society's take on femininity is both powerful and admirable as well. Great job on creating a very passionate piece that definitely inspired me and my view on femininity. -Hannah Espejo
ReplyDeleteI admire how you explained that femininity's core attributes are found in Mother nature and are not reserved to women only. I also enjoyed your use of the quote by Maya Angelou, your references to women in the military and women's suffrage, and your explanation of the phrase, "throw like a girl" (something that should be a compliment, not an insult). I absolutely loved this piece!
ReplyDelete-Lauren Whightsil
I really enjoyed this piece on femininity. Provided a wonderful perspective and I enjoyed how you incorporated how this is present in society. It was powerful and came together beautifully
ReplyDeleteCandice Velasco
I really enjoyed reading this piece, it was so inspiring. I liked how you turned the negative things into something positive.
ReplyDeleteOne thing that stuck out to me about your piece was that it began by introducing negative elements and gradually overpowered these with more positive aspects; it was very empowering. :)
ReplyDeleteNaomi Friedland
Kenzie!! Your writing is so beautiful!! I loved that you wrote about such topics of Femininity and even Women's struggle in society today, the perspective was well compiled into a very empowering piece! I especially loved how you tied femininity into Mother Nature and the resemblance between women .
ReplyDelete-Tyger Ghodossi
This is such a wonderful piece and I really liked the use of descriptions and historical references which makes this piece powerful. It makes the piece so inspiring and amazing. Great Job!
ReplyDeleteThis piece is exactly what the world needs to hear. I just want to let you know that I agree with you 100% and that I am a feminist and am not afraid to say it. I believe that women should be treated equally, and we have been fighting for that ever since the 1960s. It has gotten better yes, but we still have a long way to go.
ReplyDelete-Briana Santana
