Femininity--Kenzie

The quality of womanliness. To many, it’s the curve in one’s hips or the high octave of their voice. Dresses, pink, high heels and an hourglass figure are the things people most often associate with feminine things. From birth, females are told that to be respected we must act feminine and comply to these standards. But in truth, femininity is not the color pink, the process of putting on mascara or even being a woman. You can be feminine in your actions and tendencies without wearing dresses or nail polish. Femininity can lie within nature, objects and men. It is not a label but a quality that anyone or anything can have despite their gender or material qualities. Mother nature, the earth itself is one of the most highly respected things in the world. It is the basis of all living creatures and is responsible for the changes of everyone's environment. Mother nature plays a pivotal role within every living things life. Nature is described as a woman because of its raw beauty and its tendency to bring solitude to the things that surround itself. The hugs from the swirling wind, the joy from the vibrant flowers and the protection of the towering mountains represent the similar compassion and love that mothers and women naturally give. And although femininity is one of the most beautiful and raw qualities to exist, people often look down upon it. Feminine things are sadly described as fragile, weak and inadequate. The same way one can look at the most beautiful sunflower and call it ugly because of its ability to lose its petals. People tell bad baseball players that they “throw like a girl” because being feminine in today's society is not amiable or seen as a sign of strength. For centuries, women were not allowed to vote or participate in any physical career because of this stereotype. It took until the year 1917 for the government to allow women into the military because their feminine weakness impaired them from fighting for our country. To me, femininity does not equate to being fragile or easily broken. To be feminine is to be strong even when everyone believes you are weak. It's the strength that lies within the physical and mental ability it takes for a human body to create another living being, the courage it takes to stand their ground through times of discrimination, and the warmth of a mother's heart towards any child. The essence of being a woman is not defined by the weaknesses that others see us as but by the phenomenal qualities that many chose to overlook. Maya Angelou once said ”You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness,But still, like air, I’ll rise.” I believe that the most honorable quality of feminine people is their ability to rise in despite of society's attempt to sink them. To represent the quality of femininity is not a shameful thing but a quality that one should wear with honor and pride for it resembles raw beauty, compassion and undeniable strength.

  4. Great piece! I never thought of femininity that way. I agree that society today sees one feminine side as weak but in our own minds we see ourselves as powerful and unique individuals through femininity. - Amy Lau

  5. As a female, this was piece was both inspiring and truthful. It exposed the gender inequalities present in our society and described how women are often labeled as "weak." Despite describing these hardships, you were still uplifting and encouraged women to embrace this label and prove them wrong. A beautiful piece. -Chloe Munar

  6. As a woman and feminist who has trouble finding her voice, especially in defending women from the sexist comments we hear everyday, this was freeing to read. I also enjoyed how you mentioned femininity can be in behavior, because men should understand that they can be feminine, and sometimes they should. Men often shame other men who aren't constantly "masculine" (which sometimes just means sexist and violent- that's another conversation). Thank you for this piece, it was nice to be reminded of my strength today.

  12. This is probably my favorite piece I've read on the blog. Your stance against the way femininity is looked down upon is very easily seen by a reader that you strongly believe in this topic. I also loved how you brought up the "like a girl" aspect because that is one of the things i hate most about how girls/women are perceived to be these weaklings. Your imagery was beautiful and really gave the picture of what feminine is and how it is actually perceived, how amazing.

  13. This piece is exactly what this modern day needed. I like many, am tired of people looking at the word feminine as a negative thing like being weak. Like people saying that feminine people need to "man up" to dismiss them as people or to dismiss emotions. The imagery was beautiful and really spoke truth of the meaning of being feminine. Truly an amazing piece.

  18. I really enjoyed when you pointed out the stereo type of the word feminine relating to be weak and unmanly and countering it and saying that feminine doesn't mean female and doesn't need to have a negative connotative meaning.
I was also very impressed with supporting your statements with historical evidence.

This piece was so beautifully written. I could not have written it better myself. It was amazing. First and foremost, I love how you used this platform to address such a common misconception in order to bring awareness to it. I agree with everything that this piece explains because to me, femininity is much more than nail polish, dresses, and the color pink. Femininity means strength and power. I'm so glad that someone discussed the importance of this common misconception that has been misunderstood for ages. This was very well-written and I'm so glad that you got to share it. Thank you and well done!

  26. Ugh this was so could I can't even, everything was so eloquently said and powerful. This honestly made my day to read as I used to struggle with these ideas of masculinity and femininity as I have always been asked if I play sports or that I should when what I actually do is play piano and cry at basically everything. At this point, I no longer care about what I fall under but still the way you talked about something as sensitive as this is really refreshing to see.

  27. Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. This piece really reaches out to those that are insecure about themselves, especially with their gender identity. This really teaches the lesson of self confidence and embracing who you are as a feminine character, even when not physically seen as a female.

  28. This is beautiful and so true. It combats the need to be masculine to be empowered with an acceptance that femininity can also make us strong, and you highlighted that not only women, but men and anyone else, can be feminine too, and that's nothing to be ashamed of. I also really appreciate your choice of quote! - Fatima J.

  32. I appreciated the quote from Maya Angelou. It helped sum your central idea that being feminine doesn't mean that one is weak. Even in today's society, people need to understand that both masculinity and femininity are present in a spectrum. One is not greater than the other, in fact, the work in tandem to shape one's personality.
