Tree--Kenneth

Unbearable, completely and utterly. It is what the days had recently come to as they
became less uncommon. Dreadful were the mornings I woke up to and helplessness was the feeling carried to sleep. Everywhere felt like a prison. I couldn’t take control of my own life to explore my interests and my busy work schedule prevented any action to help this grim situation. To think I could find happiness in life as a biochemist was pathetic. My decision to pursue this path was stupidly foolish, but inexperience will allow them to happen. I couldn’t blame him for falling into the trap of the education system. Science and technology had been growing and its influence on education translated to the many victims of the institution. Who was my younger self to doubt it anyways?

The hatred for my work evolved into laziness and that eventually lead to my termination. It never it occurred to me that this perhaps was for the best. My brainwashed mind impressed on me the idea that my life was over. Through no fault of it’s own, it believed a stable, scheduled job was everything, and when that had come to an end, I had no idea what to do. Although unemployment is not the best of things, it is not the worst and much of the affliction was unnecessary. I find myself thankful for it as thinking retrospectively it was, indeed, necessary in its own right. It was necessary for my demise to lead to a new beginning. I had always wanted a more happy life and I believed I could achieve that while maintaining my job. In the end, that
could have never been more deceitful. My termination marked a new beginning for me and I had my sufferings to thank for.

Adversity was a thing of the past and it was in the adversity in which I found myself reborn. What ultimately gave me peace to my anguish was my love for nature. It was in the dense, mysterious forest and sky-high trees that I found myself entranced and renewed. I felt safe and blanketed with peace knowing that the woods would never disappoint me in my need for serenity. My misery had allowed me to find this resolution when amidst the pain I found myself suddenly calm with the environment and it was with this discovery I explored and found my love for it. The peace I found in the woods cleansed the plague on the brain that was so fond of urban society and corporate work and permitted a new life that was in tune with the world and truly happy as a treehouse builder.

  1. Your story was nice because it was personal and it is relatable since a lot of the times kids are hard on themselves and your story went deeper than that too.

  3. Based on your piece, I understand that life is hard but when we learn our mistakes and overcome obstacles, in the end, we will obtain a better life in which everyone wishes to obtain. But if life gets a little stressful, remember to "just keep swimming". - Amy Lau

  4. I liked how you wrote your piece in first person because it made much more relatable to the reader. This is a classic example of "when one door closes, another opens." It made me realize that the end of something does not necessarily mean it is the end of your life, although it feels that way. Great job. -Chloe Munar

  5. You did a really good job. I like how you talked about how as students they expect us to go on the right path and get the typical “good job.” But you emphasized that was not the only way to be successful. Awesome piece!!!-Jesse Jauregui

  6. This really portrays the struggles for some of us who want or wanted to pursue a complex yet high-paying job in order to find a secure future. I really like how this highlights the fact that having a happy future doesn't need to involve having to push yourself to achieve something people urge you to do.

  7. Your story is really well composed. I like the concept of the story and how the plot develops as you continue to read. Your story teaches us a valuable lesson that, you should follow your own path and not get to caught up in the trance of what the rest of the world is doing. You should always do what makes you the most happiest at all times, there is no point in wasting time on meaningless stuff. Good work!

  8. A huge mistake people make while choosing a career is choosing one solely based on money rather than picking something that would make them happy. Good job portraying this message.

  9. The story was not expected based on the title which was a nice surprise. I love that you so much about loving the job that you do rather than the amount that you make it shows character. The story also show a lot of growth with the mindset you had verses what you have now.

  10. This piece helped me remember that we need to fail in order to learn and that we learn much more from failing than when we succeed. Many people who have stable jobs that they only tend to for earning a living are often jobs people don't like. As we get older we go through many changes which is why it will always be okay to to change your mind, its a normal process. Don't be scared of it, but accept that change is often neccessary. I loved this piece because we are all probably confused in some way about what we want to do.

  13. Your story spoke to everyone on an intimate level, I'm sure. The philosophical nature and careful word choice ensure that this is to be the case. I'm glad you found a new source of happiness and hope that everything continues to work out for you. Nice job getting your message across, it is a truly abstract and well expressed one.

  16. This piece really conveys the modern struggle that many adolescents are much too familiar with. The tone and diction help capture the dark realities of finding yourself, but also the feeling of content when you finally do.

  17. Never saw you as the kind of person because we all expect the geniuses to become scientists, but they have happy careers as others like an artist or a treehouse builder. It was very mature of you to see the flaws students make when trying to figure out what they want from life

  18. Although this is fiction and written from the perspective of an adult, I still think it's a very relatable piece, and not only for me but probably for many other people. Apathy towards something that we think we have to do, that has been pushed onto us, or that we once thought we would enjoy is a feeling a lot of people experience, and I appreciate that there was still a hopeful tone at the end that we will someday find something we truly enjoy and are passionate about. -Fatima J.

  19. I connect to this a lot and agree that in life, everything seems so forced nowadays where we can't make our own decisions. I loved that it came from a personal perspective. It was very intriguing!! Great Job!

  20. While this piece is a little bit idealistic, I still thoroughly enjoyed it. The amount of people that are stuck in jobs they don't even enjoy just because of how much money they get for the job is substantial so I really appreciate that you wrote about this topic in the first place.

  21. A great lesson to learn from this story is to aim for what you love. Sure, a biochemist as a job is known in our society as a great occupation with great recognition and pay but who cares if you yourself are not pleased. Nice story!

  26. I really like how you state how you started off with goals but as the years progress you start to see what choices you made an decide to change some of them, it relates to a lot of people in high school who wish to become and then sometimes see that their goal is no longer their priority.

  29. I enjoyed reading this piece because it helps readers connect on a personal level and also because it teaches you a lesson. You're so right, why be a biochemist if you don't love what you're doing? The education system makes us only think about money and not our happiness.
