Allyssa--Never An Answer
As people we often times wonder why others do the things they do or what drives
someone to make one decision over another. This could be things such as , why do people
cheat on their significant other, or why someone murders another, or even something as simple
as why we pick out a long sleeve shirt over a short sleeve. Sometimes we can easily analyze
the situation and come up with an answer for the action, but other times, we sit and wonder
why, and ask ourselves, what was the motive that led up to what they did? When I was only
nine years old I had a moment where I began to ask myself that question. My family and I had
been on our way to the Los Angeles airport, we were going to be going on a vacation, a cruise
to the Caribbean to be more specific, and there is not much I can really remember now from that
trip, but I will never forget what happened on the way there. We had been driving on the freeway
and nothing about it seemed unusual, traffic was normal, the same as it is everyday in the LA
area, the sun was out, it was just an average Southern California day. As we were getting closer
to the airport, traffic hit a sudden halt and we were not quite sure what was going on, I had
never seen so many cars squeezed in one area. There was no movement, everyone's cars
were practically parked in the middle of the freeway right under an overpass, then suddenly I
heard my dad say “Oh my gosh look” and he pointed to the overpass above us and a man was
standing on the edge, I did not know what he was doing, he stood there for a few minutes, I
could hear people yelling at him but I never heard what they were saying, I had turned my head
for a split second and when I looked back, the man had jumped. Being only nine I did not know
what was going on, I had never seen anything like that before and I kept asking my parents if
the man was ok and why he did that. As soon as the initial shock was over my grandma called
911, but unfortunately the paramedics got on the wrong freeway and did not get to us in time.
So due to the fact there was no help coming any time soon my mom being a nurse, jumped out
of the car, along with a doctor who was only a few cars ahead of us and one off duty police
officer who had been there trying to talk the man down before he jumped, and with no time to
waste they all quickly tended to the man who had just lunged to his death. I saw them perform
CPR and wrap shirts and any other things people had in their cars to stop the man's bleeding,
but it was not enough, after fifteen minutes of CPR and non stop continuous bleeding, the man
stopped responding and was gone. I could see through the window that everyone was silent
and that many started to cry, my mom came back to the car sobbing and looking defeated, I did
not know what to think, I had just seen a man go from being alive to dead in a matter of minutes.
To this day I will never forget one other thing my mom told us when she got to the car, she told
us that the man's phone had somehow miraculously survived the fall, and while they were giving
him CPR it went off a few times, it was not until they knew he was dead they checked it, on the
screen he had two texts and a missed call with a voicemail. The first text was from what we
found out was his twelve daughter and it read “Hi daddy, you left work before I could say happy
birthday to you, so happy birthday! I love you daddy”, the second text was from his mom and it
said “Happy Birthday son, I am so proud of the man you have become, I love you” and the
missed call was from his wife, they played the voicemail once the police showed up and it said,
“Hi honey I have something big to tell you tonight, I am sure it is the best birthday present ever, I
love you so much and I will see you when you get home”, we found out later, her important
news was that she was pregnant. To this day I have always wondered what drove that man to
jump on his birthday, he had a beautiful family and a little one on the way. Ever since that day I
realized that more often than not our questions will never be answered.

This was intriguing because it expresses what many of us have to wonder.
ReplyDeleteI love how raw and real this personal narrative is. It really brought out a lot of emotions because I for one wonder what drives people to do certain things as well. Great job at bringing in the right amount of feeling and real world experiences to get your audience thinking.

I love the capability this piece had in leaving its audience intrigued and very curious to the overall questions this narrative revolves around, it really expressed true and confused emotions of someone so young who questions such decisions of ending your life.

One of the more engaging pieces featured this month, all because of the straight-forward tone the work emulated. I can honestly say this piece had me feeling all types of ways from beginning to end. You have my praise.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, I'm sorry you had to see something this traumatizing and even though you didn't know what was happening at the time it has obviously stuck with you. but aside from that this was really good! i felt as though i was there with the raw emotion you poured into this personal narrative, I got goosebumps while reading it. Great job!
ReplyDeleteI like how this is so personal. You left us all on a cliff hanger, I believe there are things in the world that will never be explained and there will never be an answer for.

Truly I agree that we can never really understand the motives behind a person's ideology or thought. On the surface, the life of another may seem perfect, illustrious, or even beautiful, yet beneath that surface we often find deep sadness. This piece seemed to capture the essence of that theme beautifully! Job well done! You've brought up a point that not many people like to talk or think about, and it remains stuck in my mind because the story behind it was so chilling! By the way, I don't know if you ended going on the cruise or not, what with all the traffic, but I recently went to the Caribbean, and it was amazing!

This was engaging, interesting, sad, eye-opening and very well written. I liked the fact that though the piece wasn't about you specifically we still learned something about you.
ReplyDeleteAw man. People are so important, and sometimes we don't see the impact we have on others. This piece definitely carried strong images of the irony behind life. The beginning of this piece was intriguing to me because I too am very curious of what goes on in a person's head and why people behave the way they do. The last half of the piece was quite emotional. To decide to end ones life on the day they were born is such a heartbreaking idea to think about. You did a great job describing what you saw that day even though you were so young.

I have pondered on this question many times only to forget about it again and again. This story but also theme hits deep after reading this story. Its an interesting thought of why people do what they do what they do. But this piece can indescribably stop anyone to think why thinks happen such as these. Great piece

This piece led you to wonder more about that very question...Why? Very well-written piece. -Joshua Kidwell
ReplyDeleteThat must of been such a scary thing to have experienced at such a young age. I wonder what could have happened to that man or what he had experienced to have done such a devastating thing. I thought it was really interesting to read because you shared an experience you personally witnessed, which made it more personal. Good job.

This piece made me reevaluate the choices I've made. In a way, it makes me realize that although we may question our choices and look for solidified answer, more than an answer, sometimes we need to provide emotional support. Great peice overall.
ReplyDeleteThe raw emotion in this story is what really drew me in. It was so sad and very heartfelt. It definetly pulled at my heartstrings! Great job!

Wow that was a great story. It's sad that he decided to end his life, but like you said, we can only wonder what drove him to that point. Although this event occurred a while back, it definitely still appears to have had an impact on you and I am glad that you were able to remember this and share it with us.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed hearing about this real life experience and the slight notes of how it caused changed in your lives great piece.
ReplyDeleteImmense. I don't know what to feel after reading the emotional piece. One of the things in the world we will never figure out, how to read someone's mind to seek their personal conflict and provide safekeeping. Truly a mystery.
ReplyDelete~Gregory Gomez
You know the piece is good when you leave so attached and upset that I didn't really get closure. Thank you for somehow allowing me to develop emotions. Great piece!
ReplyDelete-Nahome Woldearegay
Very emotional and heart felt narrative. Enjoyed reading this one! Good job and keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteWow, that question is always left on my mind, why, especially not only since the character is only 9 that very question raises at a very a young age and as we all grow up we realize that there isn't an answer no matter how hard we try to find one. Also the story was so deep and emotional I truly felt the passion from the character so great job!
ReplyDelete-Meghan Ustrell
Great job I liked how you used this story as an example to show that suicide is never the answer to our problems and that great things lie in wait no matter how bad your life is going. Keep up the great work! -Damian Echavarria
ReplyDeleteIt was a very relatable and thought provoking piece. I really like this one especially. You did a great job! ^^
ReplyDelete-Jeremiah Eugenio
This piece provided great support to the overall idea of the mystery of the human mind. Specifically, why we do or don't do things. This shows that sometimes our perception is clouded and sometimes we don't know why someone would drive themselves to the point of suicide. Very heartfelt and well written. Great work!
ReplyDeleteI was so intense reading this piece and it was so well written that it questions myself a little bit.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you chose to do a personal narrative. It allows the reader to see how you, the writer, feels about a certain situation and how it changed effected your life. Great work!
ReplyDeleteThis made me very emotional!
ReplyDeleteI am sure many of us can relate to this piece, and in all honesty, it made me want to cry haha.
-Brianna Schulz
This piece really struck home with one's inquires on why people sometimes act the way they do or do things. You did fantastic with this piece and it really helps reinforce the speed at which things can occur and the impact they have on those left behind. Amazing job.
ReplyDeleteHeavy. Things that make you think. I'm a little bit speechless.
ReplyDeleteI very much enjoyed reading this piece. The idea that we may never know why people do the things they do,especially when you have no control on what happens... is scary, but at the same time allows you to see things in a different light and make your own decisions based on how you saw other peoples situations turn out.
ReplyDeleteHey Llyss, this work is truly one of the best! Your ability to provide an emotional piece that is also grounded is phenomenal! It just goes to show how no matter how hard you try, you can not control the actions or intentions of others but you can dictate your responses. Your mom and your own persistent empathies conveyed through your attitudes towards the man is a great and rare quality!
ReplyDelete-Maddie Alegria (P.4)
This price really showed how unexpectable life really is. never really being in the drivers seat
ReplyDeleteBobby
This story is very beautiful and heartfelt, and I thank you for posing a very important question.
ReplyDeleteomg, this was incredible. honestly a great story. good job
ReplyDeletelove how you connected the story with the overall message, but i feel like the connection was too sudden and not really explained enough
ReplyDeleteso heartfelt and emotional. really got me thinking
ReplyDeleteI didn't see that experience you had, coming. I'm sorry you had to see that. Sadly, there are so many unanswered questions in the world and we may never know the answers. Hopefully we'll get something, someday.
ReplyDeleteso many mixed emotions while reading this piece. great attention grabber.
