Maryann-Living the thing we call "Life"

Living the thing we call “Life” Every star you see in the sky is dead. By the time you see that star’s light the star has already died and all you are seeing is the light it emitted that has taken light years to reach our eyes. (So guys don’t ever compare a girl to the stars in the sky because they’re dead.) But back to the stars, we see the product of their lives. Some stars are brighter than others, some shine in different colors. But just like stars, what are we doing with our live?. What are we going to be seen as? A second will always just be a second and a minute will always be a minute but within that minute there are a sixty seconds and within those seconds there are a million infinites of numbers we haven’t yet counted. Time is a manmade idea that we’ve come up with as means of measuring; measuring our lives, the seconds it takes for the minute hand to make a full revolution, the hours that pass as you wait in line for a ride at Disneyland. Our lives are our defined by the time we live. What do we mean when we say we’ve lived 17 years? It means we’ve lived 17 years, 884 weeks, 6,188 days,148,512 hours, 8,910,720 minutes, or 534,643,200 seconds. But for how much longer will we be remembered for? Do you want to be remembered as the guy who spent his days playing video games? Or the girl who spent all morning applying make up only to wipe it off before bed? Would you prefer to be remembered as the guy or girl who made the most out of their life? What does it mean to make the most out of our life? It means that every second is an opportunity. There’s not a minute to waste in our lives. Do you want to skydive, bungee jump, or travel the world? Become an artist, play music, or engineer the structures of tomorrow? Then what are you waiting for? The reality is that we should do what makes us happy. Happiness is not defined by the number of digits in our bank accounts because the reality is those bank accounts are full of nothing. Money is just another counting unit and while happiness is not money they are correlated but that doesn’t mean you can’t be happy when all you have is a tiny cottage in the middle of nowhere. Some people are so poor that all they have is money and lack the real riches in life. Do what makes you happy because when the average lifespan is 78.7 years why should you do anything else? Why would you want to do anything else? It might seem like we went off on tangent but fear not. The reality is that if you do everything with happiness and a feeling of satisfaction anything you’ve done is the best you could possibly give to the world. The only thing that makes an ordinary person different from an extraordinary person is the love and dedication they put into their work. We’re all ordinary people who could do extraordinary deeds. That’s what people remember us for, it’s not for the numbers in our bank account or for the hours of work we got in every week it’s for what we did. Just like the stars we are appreciated for the work that we left behind that we dedicated our lives to. The work that was done to the best of our ability. I don’t care what I’m remembered as, as long as everyone can say that anything I did was with a passion because then my light will be seen from light years away.

  1. Compelling story that really makes us think about where we want to be in life and what truly makes us happy. I know especially now since all of us are venturing off into college, we must think further into the future to what really want to be and this puts that into perspective. What are we going to do to make ourselves happy rather than everyone else? I hope to keep thinking about this throughout life.

  2. Good job! There were a few punctuation mistakes here and there but for the most part it was great. I feel like the last sentence is contradicting though because you say you don't care but you also say that you want to be remembered for being passionate, which would mean that you do care about what people will remember you for.

  3. This is such an important piece to read especially at our age considering how easy it is to lose sight of who we are and what we really want in life. I think this provides us with some important ideas that we should live by especially when making important life decisions

I particularly liked this piece because I feel like you , yourself are very true to this idea. You're all about adventure and taking risks, so I think this what definitely a very "Maryann" piece :) & I also appreciated the science you threaded in

  6. Nice job! This is something I find myself thinking about pretty often. It is not always easy to take advantage of every minute but I think a lot of us do our best. I think I'll probably be remembered as a cat lady and a photographer and that's just fine with me! :)

  10. Very reflective story on such a broad topic. I truly appreciate the amount of examples and situations you had used in order to justify the fact that we do not live for such meaningless subjects. Although, improved punctuation and less crowded sentence structure would make this work that much better. Great piece!

  11. This was a nice reminder of the thought that has been hitting me quite often recently, with the whole college planning and thinking of the future process. It goes along with the whole idea of what being successful truly is, which in my opinion it's being happy and enjoying life now. Just as you mentioned time doesn't stop, we have to make the most of it and be the best version of ourselves, show the world who we are. Great Job!! -Aileen Munoz

  12. This was beautiful! I think, now, more than ever, we are so blinded by meaningless materialistic desires, that we often neglect to truly appreciate the journey that life offers and to truly reflect on the abilities that make us "extraordinary" and remembered. Great job, Maryann! This was such an important wake-up call, not only for me but I'm sure for any other reader. I sincerely hope that my light will be seen from miles away too!

  15. That last sentence brought a tear to my eye. It made me realize what really was important. About the stars, i wouldnt mind if a guy compared me to one. Like you said, they have been dead for so long but we still see and admire their light. If a guy compared me to the stars he could be saying that even when I die i will be remembered for the things that made me shine like that passion.

  16. The theme of this piece is very relatable and definitely gave me a "reality check". It's extremely important that people are aware of how they live their lives. Not by valuing it through time, but by living in the moment. Great job!

  20. Really great piece. Compared to how big and massive the universe is, our lives are to short to be wasted. Our lives are to minuscule to be wasted on what other people think. We just need to do what we want to do, and not to focus on all the people trying to bring you down. Good job.

  22. This was an interesting piece with an interesting way at looking at life. I liked how how you expressed how those with money are those that are poor. I agree that we need to focus on the things we want to do, because if we don't, then it is as if our lives have no meaning.

  24. Interesting intro I felt like I was watching a science documentary narrated by Carl Sagan! Eye opening idea, where your point is whatever you do make sure you do it because you love it and put passion into it, which I love and totally agree with. It's too bad our time on this earth is so limited.

  27. The piece teaches a life lesson based on the time were given and how we need to make our time in the world very significant so we can shine just like the stars and make an impact we will be remembered for. It is a very relatable as we need to soon make important life choices that should make us happy not for the money we gain but for the true riches of life, I really like how this piece focuses on encouraging its readers to use the time given to be happy teaching us an important life lesson.

  38. Very interesting and mature perspective on what makes our worlds go 'round. The thing about the stars was pretty depressing, but in a somber and thoughtful way that makes you appreciate the here and now of life. Definitely worthy of hoco2k16.

  45. This was such a great peice. It was more motivational than anything and I loved it! I felt like I could really relate to it, especially now because with our futures looming around every corner, we can't lose sight of what will make us happy and what we truly want, not what the people around us want.

  46. This piece really spoke to me because the overall thought of what is happiness and what would you want to be remembered for is something that everyone at once in their lives have been asked and ideally what you've said in this piece can sum up answers that could encourage and/or inspire someone to do what they can with the little amount of time here and you've hit the spot (or at least for me) and i couldn't say it any better.

It really motivated me to put myself out more and to take more risks because at the end of the day being safe and being content isn't what life is about. It's about taking chances to be happy and to put your best effort into whatever you decide to do. Very inspirational c:.
