Marissa--That Girl from the Broadcast

That Girl from the Broadcast
As I walk through school at the end of third period, I pass by students eager to go to their next class, I find myself ready to enter into my oasis, Room H-3. Arriving in the room I am always greeted by the same familiar faces and my teacher, Mrs. Judson sitting behind her white apple laptop placed at an angle on her desk so she can view the students. The classroom, which is smaller than the average is located right next to the dance room causing me to hear the slight sound of dancing feet coming from the walls. Walking in, students immediately approach me with questions, complaints, and statements, all wanting my approval or advice on something. I glance over to see Mrs. Judson passively tending to her laptop, I must handle the students in front of me, which is just another day as Executive Producer of Etiwanda High School Journalism class.
Journalism class is like no other class on campus, the room was designed specifically to mimic a real newsroom. Room H-3 is not seen by students who are not in Journalism class because it is full of expensive cameras, tripods and all other equipment needed for filming. This is partially the reason for the strategic placement of the classroom, but also because it is grounds for secrets that are used for producing memorable shows for students. The room correspondingly has its own constructed secret. To the left is a small door with a sign that reads “Do Not Enter Filming in Progress” or “Enter” and inside that insignificant door is an enormous room complete with a green screen and teleprompter, this is where the magic happens.
When I am in room H-3 I feel powerful because inside this familiar place as Executive Producer I am accountable for what is produced to students. Also it is a place that earned me the name "That Girl from the Broadcast." I have gained an amazing experience from working in room H-3 and the amazing opportunity of being Head-Anchor for the show. This school-wide broadcast has become well-known for students and staff as, Eagles News Network (ENN). Students depend on the broadcast for updated of the latest news and events happening on and off campus.
Informing the student body is also another achievement from room H-3. Since my freshmen year and at the end of every year I have had the opportunity to speak to incoming freshman at their assembly about the importance of being involved at Etiwanda High School. Without my broadcasting practice from Journalism I would not be able to face over one thousand students to convenience them that being active in high school is beneficial to their experience. I have also been invited to speak in front of my school board, Chaffey Joint Unified School District, representing high achieving students trying to make a positive difference.
As I walk into this familiar room every day and even sometimes on the weekends I see a small space that represents more than just a Journalism class, it is the place that gave me the chance to give back and discover what I enjoy doing. It has shaped me as a student and given me connections that I would not have had. At Etiwanda High School I know the power of Room H-3.

  3. This is great insight into the world of Journalism. I felt that you took us with you into H-3 and what it means to you. The fact that the journalism rooms makes you feel very powerful and confident is reflected in the quality of the videos journalism puts out for third period SSR. Great Job to you and your team, thanks for making our school a better place. :D

  20. Marissa, great job on detailing our journalism classroom, I would totally agree with you on how our classroom is different than others including our own "constructed secret" room where we anchor by ourselves. I'm glad that you have grown throughout this class as being the leader/teacher. :)

  21. I'm not exactly in any clubs...I was in Marching Band last semester, and in drumline. Meaning, I we may start off rallies, or play in the quad before school, etc..etc... But, this gives me insight to the power of clubs, how they shape young boys and girls into dedicated, committed, and smart young men and women, and how the value of clubs (mostly when active for 3+ years) is realized, and taken into thought. The fact that you shared this, actually motivates me to join a club. Not to be remembered, but to share the experience to others, and continue a chain reaction that you're doing yourself. I'm very serious when I say I'm going to join a club..I've always seen them as something extra that takes time from something I could be doing, whether school work or straight up chilling. (Also, I'm on Pandora, and Miley Cyrus is playing.. I want to skip it, but can't stop typing.
