Kandiss--Stand Up For Yourself

Since the beginning of time kids have been teasing each other. Whether it's the way they dress, look or even their race. Schools all over the country have all these different types of anti-bullying systems. In my opinion these systems aren't helping students at all. In fact, I think it's causing young kids to be afraid of the real world.
One reason why I think these anti-bullying systems aren't helping is because they make kids depend on other kids or other adults. If a student is being bullied they should be able to defend themselves. Students shouldn't depend on other students or a teacher, councilor, parent etc. because they aren't going to be around forever. If you know how to stand up for yourself people won't bully you anymore because they know it doesn't bother you.
Another reason why I don't agree with these anti-bullying systems is because it makes kids feel like they're a victim of being bullied right away. When the majority of the time that's not even the case, it's just kids being kids. I feel like it's making kids feel like an outcast, thus making them depressed or have thoughts of suicide.
Although bullying has been going on for years I don't condone it. Of course it's wrong to make fun of people but I personally believe it will never go away, that's just how the world is. Therefore we should teach kids how to stand up for themselves rather than have them ask somebody else for help.

  1. I agree with everything you said. Bullying will never go away, it's just human instincts to insult someone because he/she thinks it the solution to all their problems. Great message to bring up.

  2. This is really powerful, and to have these thoughts and opinions as a freshman is truly incredible. I enjoy how you're very firm with your opinion, and you're not afraid to say what's on your mind and stand up for what you believe in (from what I've read). This will enable you to grow as a person, especially within your writing. Good job :)

  3. I agree with everything you said, but I feel as though there should be a limit for how far a student should go in order to defend him or herself. Overall Great story and thoughts

  11. I definitely think something needs to be done about bullying. I did mixed martial arts and kickboxing training for a few years and although I never actually fought those who bullied me in middle school, it gave me the confidence to stand up to bullies and not allow them to have control over me. Building confidence and having kids stand up for themselves is a great solution!

  12. I liked reading this. this is very good. true, we should be more dependent on our self instead of looking for help immediately once something happens.

  14. Well spoken message and strong opinion through your piece on the reality of bullying and society in general. I never thought about how kids now a days depend on adults and teachers for help, until after I read this. Overall, I think you did very good on your piece.

  15. I like how you justified your argument that the anti-bullying systems are ineffective and harmful with valid points. You did a great job defending your opinion which a lot of people share, but maybe perhaps you should choose more specific words to add clarity? Maybe it was just me but when you said " If a student is being bullied they should be able to defend themselves" I kind of thought that you were condoning violence and fighting, a more physical defense.

  19. I agree, children at a young age should be able to defend themselves, not with violence, but by using their words. Children should be heard that they are not going to back down, but by standing their own ground. I like your opinion and great job!!!

  20. I totally agree that while bullying is a problem, kids still need to be able to stand up for themselves, because as an adult they will only have themselves. This is a great topic to cover and you did a really great job on stating your thoughts!

This was deeper than my stomach.
I read the first few sentences, yes I did, and I already knew where the rest of the article was headed. You are 99.9% + .1% SUPPORTED. I thought about this, relating, in middle school, ignorant basketball players said non-legit jokes, that made no sense. Absolutely no sense. So I put them in their place and used their method of "roasting". Every single one of them either put on blast, or too salty to say anything back. And then before you know it, all these anti-bullying messages and groups start to form. But when you think about it, what are they ACTUALLY DOING? NOTHING! if anything, they are degrading the bully immune system. Instead of being taught how to defend wisely and not to the point of physical contact, kids are being taught to legitimately walk behind and teacher and curl around their legs as they say all the nasty things. but as you mentioned they will not be there for you to coil around forever. Sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands, but NOT to the point where it becomes personal or physical. As MLK did, non-violent protests. You can still get rid of bullies without slapping the crap out of them thinking that's going to solve the problem. Because 9/10 times, it WILL NOT. Sorry for getting worked up. Just as pathetic it is to copy homework, it's just as pathetic to bully someone to raise your self up on a social scale. because soon enough, your weight of bullying will *nul* the scale. Soon enough, your amount of bullying will not be able to weighed, because soon enough, you will be defeated.
