Time Really Does Go Fast
Most of us, when thinking of this school year, might think it is “only” September – it really is not that far along.  But we recently passed the six week mark, and are already about a third of the way done with the first of two semesters this year.  And for many of us, this is our last year in high school.  For years we have heard of applying for college, and it has seemed so far off.  But now it is that time for us, too – and I still feel that I am much too young to be applying for college.
The reality is that we – even as teenagers – might be older than we feel.  We all know our age, and it has just become a number that we repeat without thinking when asked how old we are.  Many of us, at the start of senior year are sixteen or seventeen years old.  Three years is not all that long a time, and to think that in only three years many of us that currently attend our school will be twenty years – two decades – old, it just seems that it cannot be right.  I don’t feel that old at all.  In a year many of us seniors will officially be adults, and I just wonder where all the time went.
I have talked to people who clearly remember what it was like in the United States during World War II – they talk about details of life from seventy years ago – and that seems like yesterday to them.  In sixty years, will our “just yesterday” be now?  “Ten years ago,” when you are seventeen years old, might as well have been a century ago.  But even at this point in time, I can look back at events from ten years ago and think, “I remember that, has it really already been ten years?”  When someone says “ten years,” it seems like such a long time.  But when thinking of what we remember from ten years ago, it really does not seem like it was very long ago.  Older people say that the older you get, the faster time seems to go.  If it already seems to go as fast as it does now, then what will it be like when we are much older?
I remember thinking when I started high school that senior year would be a few years away, and that going through the next four years would seem to take forever, but that at the end I would wonder where the last four years went – how they went by so fast.  Now, as I figured I would, I wonder what happened to the last few years.  Freshman year, I had friends who were seniors.  They were not there the next year, and I thought nothing of it – they had graduated and gone to college.  Then the same happened sophomore year and junior year.  Now that I am a senior, I am the one who will not be at the same school next year, and it seems like it cannot be right – it does not seem like it has been almost four years.  But it is already almost time to start applying to colleges – and all this is what I realized because of that.  And I realize now that even though we should plan for the future, we should value the time we have while we have it.

  1. Something about the way you wrote this made me nostalgic and took me back to meeting you in sixth grade. You haven't changed a bit in case you were wondering. It made me reminiscent of the past but at the same time extremely excited for the future. I'm also very proud of you for not mentioning rag time or the 1920's at all in this submission. Bravo.

  2. this was so relate able and i couldn't of said it any better myself. Since the start of senior year, i have been freaking out about the reality of having to go into the "real world". However, after reading your piece, i'm not as freaked out anymore. Having it put into perspective makes the concept of time not so daunting. This was so lovely to read and i hope that you enjoy your senior year and that you continue writing as it's something you're definitely good at. :)

  3. That's so true Ryan, life goes by fast and senior is going to go by fast, everyone will be so focused on their futures, they might forget their last year as high school students. It's good to think about your future, but you shouldn't forget to live in the present.

  4. This really has me thinking, "Dang I should start my apps now." Anyways, your personal narrative truly puts people in a place where they need to start thinking about their future. I agree with you about cherishing the time we have now. People don't appreciate it which is why it flashes before their eyes. Like Rachana said, I hope you enjoy your senior year!

  5. Reading this makes me want to stay a kid forever. Though I'm a freshman I can kinda relate to what you're feeling right now. Like you said, " The older you get, the faster time seems to go", is very very true. This made me realized I should really appreciate my next four years of high school. Like everyone else said up there ^ enjoy your senior year! and good luck with your college apps!

  7. This could not be any more true. Like are recent high school years, senior year will fly by! I enjoyed your clarification concerning time and how we must cherish every minute, although I felt a sense of repetition in this piece. But keep up the good work!

  8. i really enjoyed this piece because its so true! I liked that you wrote about something we can all relate to and something that shocks into saying, "dang I'm really that old!" I really enjoyed it overall.

  9. the thought of growing up and taking on adult responsibilities makes me extremely nervous. your narrative emphasizes the concept of time and how rapid it can pass you by. the only issue i had with this piece was that it seemed repetitive.

  10. I enjoyed your narrative because it provokes the audience, especially seniors, to really think about time. We all say "time flies by" and how we should enjoy it now and whatnot, but do we really put that into action? It's bittersweet--thinking about the future. Today we enjoy what little freedom we have only to sacrifice it along the way of our time.

  11. I really liked this writing because it relatable and yes time does fly! LOL Overall great work! :)

  12. Your narrative was very enjoyable and true. Time goes by so fast that you don't even realize it. For me, the fact that I'm a senior still hasn't sunk in yet. The time we have left in high school should be well spent and cherished because before you know it, graduation will be around the crorner. Great job and keep up the good work!

  13. You know, you're right. I've thought about this before and we do have to enjoy our youth for the "short" time we have yet we should also be preparing for the future, and you made me remember and reminded me of how I shoukd spend my time

  14. I do agree with you about time going by so fast that in a blink of an eye we are seniors. Today we should enjoy every moment in this short period of time for high school. Also you had my attention right from the beginning of this non-fiction story.

  15. Well Ryan to be completely honest with you I am not really sure if your narrative gives me anxiety or makes me want to reflect on my past four years at Etiwanda. But I do agree with you, time does fly and I feel like senior year came in one blink of the eye. Your narrative was thought provoking and provided readers with a feeling of nostalgia.

  16. reading your piece reminds me of what my siblings tell me every time they talked to me about school. I never really thought much of it because they have told me about 50 times so to me it sounds like a broken record , but to hear it from someone else made me realizes to actually treasure my time in high school.

  17. The message in this story is great. I too have been reflecting on how much I value my time, as are many others during our senior year. Your piece enlightens me to enjoy tomorrow, Monday, instead of dreading waking up super early haha.

  18. This really got me to think, time does go fast and i feel my four years will go by fast as well, its been going fast already even though its only the beginning of the year. Now i will try to make more plans for the future, this really inspired me to do so. Great work!

  19. I understand! Life really does go by so fast. I hope your life will turn out the way you want it to.

  20. This really is making me put into perspective my life and time and what I've accomplished. I haven't really put much thought into this because I don't want to grow up, or move out, or think about the different choices we have to make. But you have convinced me to really savor my time here because it is flying by. Good Job!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I have noticed this to be true as well. Time has flown by in the last 4 years in ways i did not expect it to. Every last moment we have now are to be enjoyed because if they aren't they will pass you by faster than Flash himself and you will never be able to catch up. This brief period of time we have should be taken advantage of as we will never have another like it.

  22. I can very well understand where you're coming from. Although I am not a senior, or at all close to being pushed off the metaphorical cliff into the real/adult world, I've heard so many stories from other peers, family members, and others. Time is almost like a roller coaster of some sort, and there's no way to control it--just to take a deep breath and enjoy the ride(:

  23. I tell myself the same thing, I cannot believe we are already seniors, applying to college or deciding what colleges we want to go to. It's crazy. These past years have gone by so fast, I don't want it to end. Great job!

  24. Ryan, you really hit your stride in the third paragraph. I didn't expect this to stir any emotion in me, but by the end, my stomach was roiling with a mix of nostalgia, joy, and fear. Fantastic job putting a new, yet comfortable spin on the topic occupying most of our minds right now.

  25. This piece was in a way a wake up call to the reality that is about to effect every one of us in just a few months. Overall, this was a very interesting read, well done.

  26. I just really doesn't appeal to me in anyway at al but it was well written and different.

  27. I love how you wrote about the time passing by so fast. I feel like it was just yesterday that I started kinder and look at where I am at now. You don't think it does but I feel each day going by much faster than the day before. Nice story.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Extremely relatable! I feel like it was better to finally realize it, than to keep trying to avoiding the thought of it like I try to do! Great job with the writing and finding something so relevant to right now!

  29. Your narrative is very enjoyable and true that time goes by so fast that we don't even realize it. This piece is phenomenal because we need to cherish our time in high school since time flies so fast. Honestly, you did a fantastic job on this piece and it's very well written. Enjoy your last year here, Ryan!

  30. I completely understand your point. You're saying, stop and smell the roses. Yes, time is going faster. I'm also rattled by the thought that we are well into our senior year. You got the point across very well, but it was a little repetitious at times. However, it did serve to emphasize the point. It was a little ominous the way seniors graduated and just disappeared, unnoticed and now you mention it's your turn. Ryan, do you fear oblivion?

  37. Your piece really put everything into perspective for me because I feel the same way. It is crazy how "just yesterday" we were all Freshmen, scared out of our minds. But I completely agree that we need to cherish these last few months we have together before everyone goes their separate ways. Good job!

  38. I can definitely relate to this. You're right about really valuing the time we still have left because we won't ever get to re-live our senior year and we should definitely make the best of it.

  48. Amazing, I'm a freshman and now you got me thinking how the next four years are going to fly and I'm going to end up in your position. I understand how life goes fast since I'm an athlete and already reaching out to college coaches; plus I'm only fourteen. Also I love your message at the very end, " And I realize now that even though we should plan for the future, we should value the time we have while we have it." Overall, I think you did a great job!

  49. I completely agree with your story, and it really made me think about how fast this year is gonna fly by. Way to keep me interested, very inspiring!

  50. Ooh, that hit hard. Thinking about time, college, graduation, age, life, is all very tiring yes, but it's what we do between that, that makes life worthwhile. The way the emphasis on time throughout the piece really brought unity within the work that made it a great read.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Good point, I did not considered it in this perspective before.

    ReplyDelete
  52. When i read this, it made me realize that we really don't have as much time as we think we have. It comes and goes and no one really notices. Good joB!

  53. I think everyone can relate to this and the experience of time flying by so fast. I often feel like I'm too young to go to college or get my life started. This was a really great and relatable piece.

    ReplyDelete
  54. i think about this a lot and how fast its going by and how i don't want anything to change but in reality it does.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I loved your piece! I completely understand where you're coming from because I'm constantly saying I'm only 16 I'm not old enough to apply yo college or graduate high school. In the beginning it seems so far away but everything happens faster than we realize. You are right in telling us to enjoy the now because before we know it we will all be adults in the real world.

  56. Loved this one! Not only super relatable, but you're right! We all need to take it easy because time flies. This had a great flow and I loved your examples. :)

  57. I droplet of water rolled down my cheek. I was touched somehow. I realize that after high school, I will only see less than 15% of my high school friends. I should cherish all my time and YOLO it. I'm only playing. Thank you for enlightening my soul!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Wow, most of us can relate to this because we are seniors and time does fly by when we are not appreciating time.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Very good story! It really made me think about how important our youth is and how fast time goes by.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Such an emotion evoking piece. Many of us seniors have this exact thought rolling around in our minds. Your story makes me feel so nostalgic and think of what I've spent my entire life doing. I think "Did I waste my time?" "Did I enjoy things enough?". I feel like we invest so much on the future that we forget to spend on the present. Very powerful work.

    ReplyDelete
  61. This story is really great. It can relate to a lot of people. Like my older cousin is now a junior and is gonna be a senior in less than 8 months and it really scary. With all the time we have, we should making memories now instead of worrying of the future because we will never know what might happen. A very inspiring story!

  62. I love the rawness of your writing. It was like a slap in the face, but it was a good slap.
You practically read my mind. I have been thinking this for the past—what? Eleven weeks?—and I cannot tell you how happy I am that I managed to find someone who wrote exactly what my thoughts were on paper (well, more like on Microsoft paper or whatever you use, because, um, yeah).
    I love your extensive—use—of—dashes. I love dashes.
And I love this piece. I love your style. Ever thought of writing a novel?

  72. This is the epitome of my thoughts on the subject of time. I remember my senior friends that I had freshman year told me that time would fly and before I knew it my four years of high school would be up. I'm a senior now and I think back to what they told me and how true it became.

    ReplyDelete
  73. After reading this I feel a lot more alert on how I spend my time doing things. I completely agree that time does come by quite fast. We are still in our youth and it's we should live it to our fullest is what I personally believe. Thank you for sharing your thoughts! :)

    ReplyDelete
  74. That point about the seniors being there one year and then just not being around the next but thinking nothing of it really hit home to me. I can think of a senior from each of my years as a high schooler that I was friends with but didn't really think of once they left. And now I wonder which underclassmen will remember me and which won't.

    ReplyDelete
  75. this was very good and very relatable

    ReplyDelete
  76. You're so right, time does fly and you put it into perspective in that writing. Your ending statement made me think of a quote from Kung Fu Panda "Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. But today is a gift, that is why it is called the present"

    ReplyDelete
  77. This submission is a work that everyone (especially seniors) can relate to! I can relate to this because I have always wondered about the same thing, like we DO get older and time has no mercy and continues on. In high school, year by year we get closer to graduation and most seniors still aren't able to wrap their mind around leaving high school just yet! I enjoyed how you displayed this thought in cohesive paragraphs and your diction is on point ! Great job Ryan! (:

  83. Simple diction and I felt that through the voice, you're really talking to us in a more intimate way. Your thought puts together the unspoken concerns of many including myself. Time is going by. To some it's too slow while for us it's going by quite fast. It's a journey and your work helped us realize this. Thanks. hey, best of luck in college.
