Lost in
Media
Every day I
have a routine which only includes being on my phone, laptop and tablet. I
spend all on twitter, instagram, vine, iheartit, etc. Name a social media and I
have it. I barely look up and when I do, I just look around for something cool
or funny or interesting to post. This is how life is now and all we do is watch
videos on how life used to be and how people had actual face to face conversation.
I thought that was so weird considering that I have never heard my friends or
even my parent’s actual voices. I always thought about what would happen when I
actually put my electronics away. And today is the day I am going to make that
a reality. I hid everything and took a look outside. The sun blaring down on my
pale skin the birds singing the most beautiful song I have ever heard. The bees
flying around the variety of flowers. After that I had stepped outside and felt
the cool breeze and the glaring sun at the same time. I started to move towards
the shopping center that was near me and I loved the way everything looked. All
the beautiful details and how the fountains had pennies from people making
wishes. All those times that I never looked up I really regret. I missed out on
all the wonderful things life has to offer. Soon I realized that the world I
was living in before never actually existed and that my generation made it seem
like the way I was living was okay. I hope that I am not the only teenager who
does this, who actually appreciates what life has to offer. But as I look
around, all I see are older generations or children that don’t even know what a
phone is or don’t care about having one. Sadly the next sets of people who take
after the world are all a lost hope. I run back to where I previously was, my
bedroom, and I lock my door. I find all my electronics and turn them back on.
And as soon I unlock them I am hooked once again. I am now stuck at home
watching videos and tweeting about how sad the world is without my phone. I
quickly forget about everything I had seen when I looked up. All the beauty I
had seen had left my head for good. The way the elders laughed at the young
children, the way people had appreciated each other without a screen. That
would be gone from my mind. I am now part of my generation. The one that
doesn’t see the beauty in things and the one that can’t even talk face to face.
My generation is and always will be a lost cause. I could’ve done something
about it but instead I decided to participate in the most boring, antisocial,
ungrateful, and cruel, and uninviting and dead generation.
Everything you have stated is so true you can make a step though and be different you already made an effort to put your electronics down and just took a glimpse of what nature and society is offering . Start now and make change trust me you will feel better. Social media isnt all that an a bag of chips anyways when it comes down to it. But I love that you were honest with us
ReplyDeletewhoa, this is a great personal narrative! I really enjoyed this because it's very true what you said since most people are always on their phones and they don't pay attention to the world( reality). In the end, I absolutely loved this since it reminds me of a video I watched that we should turn off the phones and look up so we don't miss the special moments. Good Job!
ReplyDeleteEverything in this essay is 100% true. Teens the days cant live a minute without their phone, which is very sad. Overall Great personal narrative
ReplyDeleteThis is so true! people tend to do this all the time (including me) and it's nice to have a reminder that we should look up every once in a while.
ReplyDeleteThis piece seriously made me very happy.
ReplyDeleteI also am a victim of the "social media takeover." It is very easy to get caught up in the virtual world, because, in my opinion, we have direct control of our cyber lives. People constantly tell me that I "have an old soul," because I prefer face to face conversations, rather than texting or because I visit my grandparents often and take them out. Although, technology consumes a major part of my life, I always make sure that I am not loosing the talent/art of communication. I am glad that you finally realized that there is more to life than characters and likes. We all should follow your example and put away our electronics for a good week and just examine the purity and simplicity of nature.
I really enjoyed reading this narrative because I feel as if most of us can relate. I'm glad that you recognized the problem and are making an effort to change. Great Job!
ReplyDeleteThis is so true, and I can relate to it so much. I love how you aren't afraid to say that social media has been what our generation is most involved in and the way you talk about it is amazing. Personally, Social Media has taken me over, but I love how you talk about putting away electronics and going outside for a while. Good Job (:
ReplyDeleteIt's quite sad how our generation has turned out to be, I've found almost every narrative I've read so far to be relatable, yet this is by far one of the most reltable ones. I admire how you tried to differentiate yourself from our common and ignorant ways, even though the power of technology always seems to win.
ReplyDeleteWhen I read this, it made me so happy that I wasn't the only one who thought that our generation is so caught up in social media. Even I am a victim of such a thing. All of us get caught up in social media and we make excuses that we are using social media to connect with others, but it's actually ruining our ability to interact with one another face to face. Great job!
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate this piece. You point out a truth that people, especially in our generation, do not take the time to acknowledge. I think there is a lot of power in your choice to label current and future generations as a "dead generation all lost of hope" and to acknowledge yourself as a product of the times.
ReplyDeleteIt disgusts me to see everyone on there phones everywhere I go. It'll only get worst as the years go on, people obsessed with new phones and technology, never looking up; missing chances and sights they won't get to see again. There's this powerful and emotional spoken word film on youtube, ( How Ironic ) that totally relates to this, and left me speechless. ( Look Up by Gary Turk. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7dLU6fk9QY )
ReplyDeleteLucy, thank you for writing such a wonderful story, it's so relatable. It shows that the world truely is what we dreamed it would be, as long as wee "look up."
- Bernadine Uzeta
"We're a generation of Idiots; Smart phones but dumb people."
It is all true, and it seems that there is a good balance between use of electronics and "looking up" as it is put here, but finding that balance is difficult.
ReplyDeleteThis is actually really true. you are one of the few that notice it and I think that it's cool that you found a way to appreciate the world around you and not the world that the media wants you to see. I think that its also fascinating that you're taking your own path and realizing our sad reality and trying to change your life the better which others fail to do because they don't see that their whole life is controlled by a small object with a screen
ReplyDeleteThis is actually true. Our generation is so caught up in social media that we forget to view our beautiful surroundings, and yes it can be hard to break the habit. It takes time and effort; and for the most part if something other than social media catches your attention, you'll be hooked on it too. This was a great piece and I'm sure we can all relate. Good Job (:
ReplyDeleteYour essay was really true and i really enjoyed it because i can realize that the facts of our generation is all about technology and not realizing the reality right in front of them. I most positive that this essay is 100/100
ReplyDeleteI found this short narrative to be very realatable to life that we as a generation have become accustomed to, and that we as group must make a joint effort to assure it doesn't continue to change us into something we will look back on our death beds and regret our decision in looking at a screen then experiencing the world we were born into.
ReplyDeleteSo true and relatable! It reminded me that when I go to camp over the summer I don't have any electronics for five days and it the best thing ever to break away from social media and appreciate the nature around me. Great job!
ReplyDeleteThis narrative was really great. I can totally relate to it and you did an awesome job writing it. Everything you wrote about our generation is totally true and you made me think. Great Job !
ReplyDeleteAll most everyone is lost in Social Media and that is just sad. It makes some people less social in person, often too much of anything can be bad for you. I enjoyed reading your personal narrative, great job!
ReplyDeleteVery true, most of us can relate.
ReplyDeleteWow, you literally pointed out the flaw in today's youth. I used to be the same way when it came to texting. I would respond to peoples' messages literally in less than a minute. I must say though that you did an excellent job with this pice. You chose a topic that everyone can relate to. And who knows? Maybe you have inspired someone to make a change in their ways and look away from the screen. Great Job!
ReplyDeleteYes! Your work has made a bold statement that the youth must acknowledge! I appreciate how you began your work with sharing your personal routine on numerous social media sites because teens like us can relate to these events as well. Also, I liked the way you described your new vision of the surrounding world that the young generation neglects when you made the decision to put away your electronics. Good job on this piece Lucy! (:
ReplyDeleteYour essay is really true to our generation now in days and we could all relate to that
ReplyDeleteLike the other bloggers commented, this piece is very relatable. I'm on my phone constantly and that just isn't right. The world is wasting away while we're on Instagram. Good job!
ReplyDeleteThis is so true! and a lot of people could relate to this. Overall great job!! :)
ReplyDeleteAs I read this essay, I thought, " Wow, this is so true." This is a very accurate description of the children in today's society. Great piece of work overall, I really enjoyed reading this!
ReplyDeleteI really loved this piece because i constantly hear people saying how they cannot live without their phones and how the elder generation despises our electroncs and how they have desocialized us. The unfortunate thing is its the truth and we cannot do anything to stop it, i loved that you addressed that, that we are a lost cause and that as hard as we try we cannit get away from it now. Loved this piece alot.
ReplyDeleteThis piece really desrcibed what a generation has grown to become and sent a strong message to the source directly through this blog. Hopefully those of us who are too caught up in technology can read this and are inspired. Great job!
ReplyDeleteWhat you said about technology is very true. Sometimes when I'm in my room I just want to be on my I phone and watch videos all day to. But you should make a commitment to yourself and try to stop using your phone. it'll be hard but I promise you it will get much easier as time goes on .Great story!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteMost people can connect to this piece. I like how you use words to portray how our generation is today. Good job.
ReplyDeleteI love this piece of writing. Your details were great and a lot of people can relate to this. Overall this is an amazing essay.
ReplyDeleteVery very true! Times have changed so much and your piece depicts all the flaws with kids and teens these days. So many could relate or be blind. Very nice!
ReplyDeleteGreat personal narrative most of us can relate !!
ReplyDelete:)
Wonderful usage of words, so relatable. Good job!
ReplyDeleteI found this essay very very relatable. Actually, all teens can relate! This essay expresses how technology affects people, especially us teens in bad ways. All in all, very impressive!
ReplyDeleteReading this makes me so sad because we live in that generation, but I hope we start doing what you did! Putting them away for awhile and start enjoying the out doors.
ReplyDeleteThis is surprisingly accurate and I really feel like you captured the way our society is today. Good job!
ReplyDeleteYou're piece is very true to its words, as you can see, very many people have become overly attached their smartphones and various materialistic things. Many people realize it, but not many do much about it--I'm quite glad you decided to speak out about this situation, awesome(:
ReplyDeleteHaha pretty accurate about our generation. I love how you didn't just attack the current young members but instead shared your short experience of going electronic-free and informed the readers how you enjoyed and appreciated the life before you unfortunately got sucked back to your original lifestyle. You can still change back!
ReplyDeletealthough this is relatable Im not much of a social media person other than texting or calling, I don't have much of a passion for constantly being on my electronics, I am on them very often but not addicted....great job on this piece
ReplyDelete-jaedon adan
At first I thought this was a futuristic society in which nobody hears anyone's voice and communicates through electronics. As I read further, I realized that this is my generation. This is a scary reality and a rather depressing view of future generations. Makes me want to throw all my electronics out the window, but of course, I'm not going to :)
ReplyDeleteI am glad to know that there are people who at last realize the problem and are trying to fix it. I personally hate social media, i don't have a instagram or a tweeter or a snap-chat or any other crap they have. Ill admit that i don't go out to often, but i do go out when my friends come over and we go swimming or take a hike through the field by my house, or toss a lemon around, stuff that should be normal, but instead your considered weird if you don't text 24/7 and play video games. I did just get a smart phone a few weeks ago and it is really distracting, but i still manage to keep it in my pocket instead of playing geometry dash in the middle of class, or checking a text from your friend who is at lunch. This generation needs to learn not to be so ignorant and just put away the dang electronics for once in there lives.
ReplyDeleteInteresting expose on the consumerism and technological obsession of the post-Millennial generation. Do you think the USA-centric, jaded attitude we display could be derived from this?
ReplyDeleteGreat read. I have been trying to cut back on using electronics, and I have been talking to those whom I care about as much as possible. Reading this made me realize that I need to put my phone down even more often and just take in the scenery around me.
ReplyDeleteYou are a person who is confused considering the fact that you know that it is wrong to be all over social media yet you are still on it. That sounds like a teenager all right. A lot of us truly understand and that is what makes it a good piece
ReplyDeleteThis was a great narrative. It shows how big a difference life has become compared to what it used to be and how this generation is too busy with social media that they don't realize what else there is in the world. Great job!
ReplyDeleteYou're not the only one who spends all their time on social media. Of course this is extremely relatable. Good job.
ReplyDeletewow, awesome vocab, although I don't particularly relate to it, I can assume that most people can. Awesome job!
ReplyDeleteHaha yeah i can relate to this, this is most likely something that everyone can relate to which is what makes your writing enjoyable to read, good job
ReplyDeleteOMG you did a good job I love how you put so much detail and I love your story overall good job (:
ReplyDeleteThat is true. Many people do get lost in social media. Great story.
ReplyDeleteWow this is so true even I do this. It really makes me think about all the beauty that I'm missing outside. I usually lock myself in my room and go on my computer but that's just how our generation is now. Maybe it's time to change.
ReplyDeleteI like hat you chose something we can all relate to.I found your honesty refreshing.
ReplyDeleteThis piece is so true and relatable.Great job!
ReplyDeleteThat's really true though.. because in our digital life we need phone, tablet and laptop...Like right now i can submit my comment with my laptop.
ReplyDeleteIronically, everyone here is going along with it. Why do we spend our time on it? Sure, there are drawbacks, but think about the good it also does. It's brought so many people together. But I understand. I like your rant and it's very relatable and true in so many ways.
ReplyDeleteYour piece is interesting because we young teenagers usually hear this point of view from older folks, so it's great that you spoke about it. By your piece I would suspect that you are an intelligent, bold, truthful and self assured person! Great Job on making a point.
ReplyDeleteVery relatable. Good job on being true to your words!
ReplyDeleteThis story is very relatable. I'm sure that almost everyone who read this could relate to the addictive devices and how they control us. I enjoyed this story and am going to try to stay away from my phone now!
ReplyDeleteI am so guilty of taking part in this apocalypse we call "Social Media". I feel lost without my phone sometimes and it's pretty ridiculous. I think you did an awesome job with this piece and I really like how you personally made an effort to counteract the problem and set a call to action for readers. Well done!
ReplyDeleteWow, reading this, I can relate. Sometimes there are days where I'm just lost in social media just like you. I too noticed that I'm always cradled up in my dark room and so I gave the world a chance and it was wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThis narrative was really good! I was able to relate to the story so that made it just as interesting.
ReplyDeleteNot gonna be the first to say it but this is definitely are generation now, I can't even imagine a day without using technology.
ReplyDelete-Martin Landaeta
Could not agree with you more! I was checking my twitter feed as I read this, how sad is that right? This generation is the last that has experienced a normal childhood that wasn't involved with technology and I feel that we do need to cherish those memories and continue to live through this last legacy. Good job!!
ReplyDeleteIt's refreshing looking at our generation from this point of view, amazing read, keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteI loved this piece because what most kids/teens don't understand is that there is so much beauty in the outside world of a computer screen or pone screen.
ReplyDeleteLucy, I really liked your piece. And it's true that our generation is like this now and how when we see the beauty without electronics it's only for a brief moment. Then again one touch of the technology we are back to a non-social life behind a screen. Somehow I believe we can change but are there enough people willingly to do so? Again you did a great job on your piece. c:
ReplyDeleteI feel like this poem is true because it is easy to see that people have their faces buried into their phones because they want to see who is doing what in other people's lives
ReplyDelete-Corbin Cagle
I really enjoyed reading this piece because every sentence can be applied to me because as a typical teenager I am attached to my phone and spend most of my time on my gadgets whereas I could be spend time doing other things. This piece was interesting and caught my attention because of the title and I really like how the structure of this piece is very descriptive because I feel like I can relate to this on another level.
ReplyDeletethis idea of technology being a problem in the future is super prevalent and gives a call to action towards the reader! great job keep it up!
ReplyDeleteThis really is a great piece of reading. I can't believe you are a freshman because this just blew my mind. The writing style was excellent. It really made me feel like I needed to self reflect. I love how you bring the personal aspect into the story because it really draws the reader in to be more interested because they feel like they can really connect, at least I felt that way. Anyway great job I think this is really cool and honestly it does connect well with our generation.
ReplyDeleteReally good, i like the story about social media :)
ReplyDeleteI go through the same thing everyday I want to go outside but dont need to when I can text my freinds home you have a talent to express your feelings through writting keep it up.
ReplyDeletethis is absolutely true! I'm also guilty of it too...
ReplyDelete"most boring, antisocial, ungrateful, and cruel, and uninviting and dead generation", talk about moving words. While I disagree with some of the points you made in your story I found the way you expressed the topic with your own personal experience helped it grow in strength. Good job.
ReplyDeleteIt is a sad realization that most of our generation and the ones to come will be totally attached to their devices that they may not be able to enjoy the many pleasures of life. I'm glad there are others like you who realize this.
ReplyDeleteI agree that our generation is a bit obsessed with social media and technology. Sometimes when I'm with friends or family, it would be nice to have a moment where everyone was not occupied with their phone.
ReplyDeleteHonestly I have no idea what your talking about because I could care less about m phone and twitter, but at the same time I know exactly what you are talking about because of my addiction to videogames. In fact I didnt post tis comment on time because I was playing a videogame
ReplyDeleteI believe what you said about this being a generation where everyone finds themselves lost on the internet or social media, but I don't believe it's a lost cause.
ReplyDeleteI can totally relate to you, I am on my phone 24/7. And I'm glad you put all your electronics for once and enjoyed the view outside. We do live in a messed up generation.. great piece:)
ReplyDeleteThis a very good. I often fell like I am getting lost in technology too. What I like is that I can relate.
