Alexis--It's Me and You till the end baby girl

It’s Me and You till the end baby girl

A sister by definition is a female who has one or both parents in common with another.  A generic and bland description of the person who means the most to me. Since I was a little girl I was told by my mother to treat my sister like she was the only thing I had in the world. At the young age of..  I don’t know? Six? I didn’t quite understand what she truly meant by that. If my sister got in trouble we’d both suffer the same consequences.  If she got beat? Guess what, I got beat too. Although cruel at the moment, I now understand why my mom raised us the way she did. It was to teach us that we had to stick together and never abandon one another. One day after we beat the living crap out of each other my mom gave us a lecture (like always) but, ended it a little differently. After she was done yelling, my mom tried to explain to us why we should value one another. The words she said next would never escape my mind. My sister would be the only person to never leave my side. The only person to fully understand me and all my struggles. The only person who would never bad mouth me or stab me in the back. The only person to equally feel my pain and happiness. The only person who will tell me what I need to hear and not hold back. The only person who will love me unconditionally. The only person who really, and I mean REALLY, knows me for who I am. I have spent every moment of my life with that “female”. And we argue about half the time but, I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. My worst fear in life is not having her around to share my greatest and darkest times with. Not having her to complain to when I have a bad day. Or laugh with her about a random girl’s tore up hair. Or talk in that stupid accent we made up when we were little. If something were to happen to her, I would also die shortly after of a broken heart. I’m one of those people who believe in soul-mates but, I don’t believe they have to be your significant other. Instead I think they are someone who you share an extraordinary bond with. I don’t need anyone else in this world. I love her with every ounce of my being and particle of my soul. The best gift my parents could have ever gave me is her and I can’t thank them enough. A sister to me is the only person I couldn’t live without.
“Isn’t it weird that you’re my sister? And you live with me?” - Karina

  1. This made me tear up I know exactly how you feel . I have two sisters and my mom had put us through the same type of discipline you've had ! I give you props girl ! Having a sibling especially a sister is a challenge but a great challenge .Glad somebody made it known that having a sister isnt always a bad thing but a great thing. This is my favorite piece I love how I can relate to pieces of writing !

  4. This piece is very relatable. I have two sisters, an older and a younger, growing up I was closer to my older sister because we were two years apart. I admired her responsibility and matureness. I grew up much faster than my peers in elementary school because my older sister matured quickly and I was fast to replicate. My older sister is now in college, so my relationship with my little sister has grown tremendously. I now know that I have to maintain a positive example because my sister will follow my guidance. It is not an easy task, being an older sister, but I know that I will never be lonely and that I will always have a support system, whether I would like one or not. Great job!

  5. This is beautiful! I have two sisters and honestly I do not know what I would do without them; my sisters mean the world to me. I loved how you described the different experiences you had with your sister, through reading this I can tell how strongly you feel about her.

  6. I love how you wrote this, with all of the examples and how I can relate to it. I have one older sister, and I don't know how I would be without her. I love how you put what your mom said, because my mom would say the same exact thing to me. I also love how you put the definition of what a sister is, but in reality a sister is so much more than that.

  7. Personally this is my favorite October writer. I have a sister and even though she annoys me half the time we still love each other.

  8. Although I don't have a sister, I have a brother and we argue constantly. Not a day goes by without an argument or some fists thrown. Yet after we argue, my parents would always tell us that we would only have each other when they were gone. As stubborn as always, I shrug it off. Yet there are times in which I do realize that it's true--your sibling will be by your side always.

  9. My parents instilled in me the same ideas that your mom told you. My two sisters drive me crazy but I know that they''ll 've there for me when I need them the most. I liked your use of repetition where you said, "The only person...", here you emphasize how much you love and value your sister. The magnitude of it kept me reading. Thank you for sharing your work.

  10. I can really feel the strong emotions that you incorporated in the piece. Overall, your essay is very raw and relatable. I have an older sister, and honestly, no one in this world can anger me more than she can, but I don't know where I would be without her. This was great!

  12. I've just recently gained a younger sister in the past few years and I can only hope that one day we share the same connection you do with your sister. This story was obviously heartfelt and I admire your bravery for sharing your feelings. Great story!

  15. I found this piece to be a new definition to some on what love really is, showing that it has its ups and downs and that it doesn't have to a physical relationship to show two people truly care for one another.

  35. I love this! I have a sister as well and I don't know what I will do without her! It makes me so happy when I see other siblings treating one another with unconditional love!

    ReplyDelete
  36. That's so true about sisters. They can fight as if they hate each other but don't let the outside world attack either one because then they will join together against the world. A sister always has your back. Parts of your story was so true, it could go on a Hallmark card! I hope you shared this with her sister, it would make her feel so special!

    ReplyDelete
  37. This is a heart warming story but i wish i could have that kind of bond with my brothers and sister. They all make fun of everything I do wrong, hold it against me for years, make sure everyone they know also knows my embarrassing moments, punch me, take control of the TV or the computer or what ever I'm using, use me so i can do stuff for them, and once every now and then, they are actually nice or decent. Even though that is what family does, i never thought of it to this extent. I couldn't live without them, but i can't live with them either.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I loved the way you opened this story, comparing the impersonal definition with your definition was a huge strength of this story. I also really enjoyed the anecdote about your mother, I feel that it added to your message really well.

  39. This story gives great depth of detail of how you and your sister are. This is a GREAT piece of literature and I hope you show your sister this to show to her how much you appreciate her.

  40. I loved this story. My brother and I were the closest of friends and did everything together. Then he enlisted in the Air Force, and lives 3000 miles away, and I get to see him once a year. I'm glad that it sounds like you treasure every second you have with your sister.

  43. This was very touching. Your narrative shows me how important family is and how much we can neglect that .Siblings always have an inseperable bond and its great that you are there for your sister. Great work!

  45. I don't know why, but this made me cry. It's so beautiful and relatable. It's just me and my sister and I don't know what I would do without her. She has always been there for me my entire life and I don't think there is a single thing I don't tell her. My mom says to us all the time that sisters will never leave your side and I know that's true. I absolutely loved reading this.

  62. This is one of my favorites because it's so true about sisters and there are so much emotions that made my heart glow up and warm. I have little sister and even though she bugs me 24/7, I still love her no matter because I will always be there for her. I felt so happy after I read this because I know that I should value my sister but also my family since not a lot of people have families nor siblings love and depend on each other. I couldn't live with my brother and sister since they make my life complete. Keep your marvelous amazing writing! Cheers to this fabulous story :)

  65. AHHH MENDOZA! This piece made my insides tingle because I would have never expected for you and Katrina to be this close. I love how you love Katrina unconditionally no matter what. From reading this, I can only imagine the things you would sacrifice for your sister just to have her by your side. I love how you willingly let her vent to you, pour her heart out to you, etc and manage to be that big sister who she can look up to. The relationship you and Katrina shares makes me wish that my brother and I had the same exact bond. I really loved reading your story because everything you mention about her really shows that you support her and care about her and that you are more than grateful for having her in your life. Good job Mendoza! I love you!!!

  74. I personally cherish the idea of siblings because I am an only child. And so this story about loving your sister and always being there for each other really touched me. The meaning grew even deeper as you gave stories of how you two grew closer and closer and always overcame any differences you had.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I can really relate to this story as i have multiple siblings. We tend to get along and im glad i have them by side when i need them.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I have a younger sister and we never got along when we were younger. Now that we are older we are literally like best friends. But unlike friends I KNOW she'll always have my back. Your mom said the same thing your mom did. Of course we still fight and mess around but that's what's so fun about having a sister. "A sister is a little bit of childhood that can never be lost.''

  77. i Don't have any really close siblings but great piece:)
