Untitled--Hailey

Wake up, let her in, help her to bed, go back to sleep, wake up again, go to school, go
home, do homework, eat, go to sleep. That was her routine every day. From the ages of 10-13, that was her life. “Estoy esperando a que mi mama llega a la casa”. Those were the words she would say when she would be on the phone with her grandmother almost every night. She was still scared of being home alone so talking with her grandmother helped her because she didn’t quite feel alone anymore. Where’s her dad? He was on the other side of the United States with no idea of what was happening in his daughter's life. Why didn’t she tell him what was going on? She was naive. She held onto the belief that her mom would change and she knew that, if she told her dad, he would quickly take her away from her mom. That’s why she would only talk to her grandmother about it, she trusted that she wouldn’t say anything. She didn’t like to let what was happening in her life affect her so she always acted as if nothing was wrong. Although, as time went on, it got harder. Not only because her mom was never home but also because when she was home all her mom would do was yell at her and ignore her. She tried so hard to to make her mom proud of her and happy that she was her daughter but nothing ever work. “Mom! I got an A on my math test! Look!”, all she would get was a hm and her mom wouldn’t even glance at the paper. After a while she just got used to it and stopped really caring what her mom thought which then lead to her not caring about what her mom did. That's when all of the endless and, not
to mention, pointless arguments started. Her mom didn't see what was wrong and all her daughter wanted was for her mom to understand how much she was hurting her and how all she wanted was a mom who truly loved and cared for her. It didn't take long for her to realize that she wouldn't get what she wanted which led to her just doing her own thing. Her mom wasn't home by 11, she would go to bed without a care in the world. Her mom didn't care about her grades, she still kept getting good ones because she was getting them for herself and not for someone else. Her mom would yell at her for not reason, she would brush it off as if she didn't say anything. Anyone who saw her would never think that she was going through anything because she was so good at hiding it. Laughing was her way of hiding what was going on and everyone believed it. Her dad found out what was happening after about a year and a half and she enough he wanted her to move back to California and live with him but she couldn't do that to her mom. Even though she was the way she was, she was still her mom and she didn't want to leave her. What a mistake that was. That was the worst year of all. Even more arguments, being left home alone for way more than usual, getting so worried again to the point she would leave the apartment at 1 in the morning just to find her mom, and her ending up not wanting anything to do with her mom. She moved after that year to live with her dad and didn't talk to her mom for months. The interesting thing is that even though her mom put her through so much at such a young age, she chose to look at the brighter side of it. Everything that happened turned her into who she is today and she could not be more happy with the person she became.

  1. I really like how the character clearly has circumstances in life that would bum anyone else out, but in the end she's still optimistic and hopeful. This story's a good lesson to turn awful experiences into learning moments.

  2. I like how in the piece it gives of a feeling of despair in the beginning and gradually shifts into optimism I find it inspiring to although in the character's life she had experienced a lot of hardships, she ended up letting that accumulation of negativity motivate her achieve the optimism she's always yearned.

  6. The piece is structured beautifully. I enjoyed how the story developed along with the main character, and as the plot grew the speaker's mind grew too. It's such a personal story, and whether its yours or not I'm glad you shared it.

  7. The story was very realistic and i really enjoy reading stories that i can relate to because i can relate to the whole parent thing in a different way sometimes parents can't really notice how good we are doing without them acknowledging it. They are busy through the week with their jobs so i really like that the character is strong figure for herself and no one else. -Saulina Lopez

  13. I like this story because it explains what some kids go through and how we never know what happens at home. And it also shows how even though family does so many bad things to us, we still love and care for them. The tone just flowed throughout the whole story and the details was amazing.

  14. This piece was not only beautifully written, but was so captivating with the emotions and characteristics of the character. For someone to endure such situations and events yet still become such an amazing person is empowering. I loved the moral of pushing forward and never allowing negativity and obstacles to change who you are.
