Success. The thing that everyone strives to be and may be someone's main purpose or
goal in life. Everyone can be successful, even a homeless person or someone that may not seem
like they are stable or live up to society's standards. Success is a very subjective concept and
there are different ways to interpret it. Everyone has their own way of defining what success
means to them but sometimes we let the public and social media or just the media in general get
in the way of that. To me success is simple and it just means the accomplishment or achievement
of one’s personal goal or task. The goal may be big or small but as long as you achieve it you're
successful in my eyes. Other people’s way of interpreting what success means could be in the
business world or aspect. The media and social media has made us think that the focus of success
is exclusively derived from a business concept and this model has mostly to do with the number
of one’s earnings or one’s accumulated wealth. The public has made us think that if you don’t
have money, make a certain amount of money, or you're not rich you're not successful and that’s
not how we should look at things. Don’t get me wrong, being rich is nice and I would like to be
rich someday but I don’t won’t go about getting there the wrong way or based on the media's
way. Success is also rooted in happiness and if you let the media dictate what makes you
successful you may go down a path that you were never meant to be on and end up at a job that
may pay you well but you never like going to work because it’s not what you want to do but you
want to make the money. A person that makes $40,000 a year may find more success or may feel
happier in life because they are doing what they love versus a person that makes $300,000 a year
just because they are not doing what they love to make this money. Success is not just about
numbers but it can be determined by our social, political, educational, economic, and religious
values. Success could always be doing your best, having a place to call home no matter what it
looks like, believing you can, and knowing your life is filled with abundance. There are also
some principles to being successful or what makes you successful. Some of them are keeping
your word to yourself to build self-respect and an identity, using your envy to your advantage to
gain what you want, having no self-pity, understanding that failure is feedback and not a setback,
and fixating on your vision but being flexible of the details. The reason I said that even a
homeless person can be successful is because if their motive was to refuse to conform to societal
norms they are successful if this lifestyle is fulfilling to them. We are the judges of our own
success and only we can determine what makes us successful or what we find success in. We can
not rely on the media to tell us what makes us successful or how to live our lives to achieve what
they think is success. We will always be miserable and stuck in this loophole so do what makes
you happy, live life, and do whatever makes you feel good. Success may come faster to others
than it does to you but don’t get discouraged and give up on yourself. Keep working towards
your goal and strive for greatness. Live on your own terms and conditions and don’t conform to
societal norms.
