What is Christianity?--Lizzie

Religion means the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or Gods. Each person's definition of religion is different. I lot of people say that religion gives people something to believe in, a hope for a better tomorrow. At least that’s what they say it supposed to be. If you look into the religion of christianity they believe God is supposed to be something or someone that loves everyone. Christians are supposed to be people who believe in God and they follow the teachings of the Bible. Christianity is a religion. If the teachings explain that you need to love God and love others and that is the religion then why don’t they. Sex before marriage, having a child out of wedlock, divorce, all these actions are shameful according to the christian religion. Christians are known for Shaming people for the mistakes they have made. We miss interpret what the Bible says, but Christianity is our religion. The church is supposed to be a place where people come together broken it’s where you can go when you feel lost but now the church is a place where people go and show off how great they are at being Christians. Instead of it being a place where people confess their sins and ask for help and forgiveness it’s a place where people compete for who can be the best. this is not what Christianity is. When you look back in the Bible the people who Jesus hangs out with the most are the “sinners “ and the people that are trying to crucify him, who say that he is a liar are the ones that call themselves religious. He never condemned those who sinned or judged those who were seen as disgraceful. Jesus loves everyone and if you see that Christianity is your religion then why don’t you do like Jesus does and love people from who they are and pray for who they will be. I am a Christian and I call it my faith. Although it may seem that I have a problem with religion specifically Christianity I don’t I just want it to actually be what it’s supposed to be. It should be something that people put their faith in, their trust in ,something that they live their life by and if you choose to live your life to compete with other people, trying to be a better person than they are, what are you really accomplishing? If it is supposed to be what I think it supposed to be. Religion is your belief, I specified Christianity because it something that I've lived through and I’ve seen and I have experienced. I’m not saying this is for all religion. I do you believe there is a reason why there’s such a negative stereotype when it comes to Christians and a lot of it has to do with the way we portray or religion. Religion should be something positive it should be something that people are interested in and not something that people are afraid of or disapproving of.

  2. This is a really good way of describing the development of people's view of religion in recent times, and I do agree with the fact that it has become a negative stereotype, even though it should not be. Very good choice of topics to write on, I enjoyed reading this one.

  4. One of the lines, "I am a Christian and I call it my faith," really stood out to me. I hate when people ask me if I'm religious because honestly I don't think I am. But I'm involved in church, I love Jesus, I try to follow the Bible. I think there is a huge difference between the way I live my life and the way religious people live theirs, and this blog definitely helps clarify that.

  5. Your piece depicted the changing perceptions of religion very well. Your personal anecdote about what status religion should hold, in your eyes, was a nice way to end it.

  6. I really appreciate the fact that even as a Christian you are able to recognize the discrepancies in the religion and what needs to be improved. It’s interesting to see a religious persons view on religion so I really enjoyed reading and I think your writing style is great!

  7. This is a powerful piece that offers a fresh perspective on the topic of religion. I personally found myself agreeing with a lot of your points as they were well supported. This piece is able to change other people's perspective of religion regardless of their own beliefs.

  8. Lizzie,
Your piece is an accurate look at many of the unnatural, negative elements of modern (and even historical) Christianity. While reading your post, I found myself nodding in agreement quite a bit. Personally, I am disappointed and saddened at many grotesque sociopolitical movements and actions falsely operating under the name of Christianity. These movements often include discriminatory, close minded, and social stratification centered inclinations. This all under a religion I see, as you do, built on love, peace, and goodwill for mankind. Fantastic writing!

  9. I completely agree with everything that you said. As a christian I see the negative stereotype that is placed upon the religion and it is really sad to see that considering the doctrine that the Bible teaches is love. I am glad you spoke on this topic and brought it to light. Good work!

  10. Your piece is something that I can relate to. I agree that individuals state their religion and being the superior of other religions but they do not represent who they are in their religion like you mentioned about people going to church and competing, and not presenting their kindness. Thank you for sharing this piece, I am now aware that individuals who are religious are aware of other people actions in their religion. - Amy Lau

  11. Yes girl. I agree so much with this. I believe that as christians we are called to love and not judge, to accept and not condemn, and to speak good into the broken because we too are broken. I love love love your interpretation of christianity and I especially enjoyed you naming it as your faith. thank you lizzie. -Charis Webber

  12. This is a great piece. Personally, I'm not a Christian, but I respect the religions that other people choose to practice. However, there are some people who give these religions a bad name by using it as an excuse to practice hate. I liked the fact that you called out those people in your piece and gave a reminder of what the religion is actually about. Great job!

  17. I completely agree with your narrative. The way the religion has been portrayed throughout time is not an accurate way of the way Christians should be living their lives, if anything many do the opposite

  18. I am not religious myself but it was interesting to hear a religious persons perspective on christianity. I often have negative feelings around it because, like you said, many use religion as an excuse to justify their prejudices but it is good to hear that not everyone thinks that way.

  20. I 100% agree with everything you said about Christianity. I am a christian myself, but I struggle with going to church nowadays because it has changed and it does feel like a competition for who is the best christian. Thank you for sharing this and shedding your faith with others. I hope christians, true, honest christians, can be seen and talked to without automatic judgement or fear of being judged.

  24. i think its really amazing when Christians see the problems within the church like this, i have always been hesitant to truly conform to Christian Religion based the way that many are treated when people do not act accordingly to the what the bible says, i do not like the hypocrisy but your piece gave me hope.
