M̶o̶d̶e̶r̶n̶ Art--Josh

The cool thing about art, is that you never really know what was going on inside of the creator’s mind at the time of conception. Despite any marxist, feminist, or neoclassical analysis one may engage, they are all solely speculation. Perhaps, Lord of the Flies isn’t actually a social comment on the manifestation of the superego lined with Freudian theories, but merely an extended dream of the mind of William Golding. Literary and art critics can easily become creators of clever allusions to reference deeper thoughts, and are endless in their pursuit behind the true meaning of anything at all. Not to discredit their work, nor the value of critical thinking, however, but sometimes it becomes simply humorous. Recently, I took a trip to some local museums in LA, to get in touch with my sophisticated palate and and mockingly become an art critic myself. One painting in particular, in the simplest terms, was a blue painting. The canvas was moderate in size, and the shade was nothing of excitement. Yet, here I stood, looking at a sixty year old painting, scrutinized for passing the invisible shield protecting a blue object at one of the most respected and prominent modern museums. Maybe slapping “modern” adds some credibility, like the rest of society aren’t as intellectually developed as others and can never capture the true essence of “Abstract Painting: Blue” (and in that case, let me slap “modern” in the title of this submission in case you don’t like it). But then again, I absolutely love how others can marvel at this same painting. Art is defined by the beholder, and beauty is relative. Luckily, this gives some less beautiful individuals, like myself, some hope for the future. “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” holds very true for art. If everyone on Earth held the same taste, I suppose there would just be one, very big, very similar museum. Uniqueness and inquisitivity thrive under such an environment, and create our clothes, our songs, and our minds. Anyway, back to my opening sentence. Art constantly transforms, and will never truly be duplicated. Jazz musicians can improvise a solo, and never be able to replicate the style or tone, even directly after originally playing it. I constantly experience this through my embarrassing inability to draw. One moment, I will blindly sketch lines and shapes in hopes that an image will appear, and sometimes I am surprisingly content with the result. Yet, if I tried to perfect it, copying it over and taking out some of the errors, this end result is never in comparison. The original is perfectly imperfect, and unable to be matched. In the same context, our thoughts are also art. To my experience, I have found much frustration in finding the perfect line for my essay, only to be unable to repeat it when my pen hits the paper. We can never repeat a past thought exactly, because we are always and constantly influenced by new ideas and experiences. This, in my opinion, is the purest form of art. A genuine representation of the mind and the soul, a medium of thought that can never be vocalized, an attempt to communicate the complexities of yourself.

  1. Wow You're essay made me really think, It is true I can relate to you on the drawing I usually have that same problem. What I usually do is leave it as is haha. Good essay or "modern art" I liked it a lot.

  2. This is a wonderful read! Putting your deep thoughts into this piece expresses many ideals i have longed to think about and individuality in this piece is very important from what you say to how we do things we cannot repeat

  3. Very thoughtful and intelligent piece. Art is great in showing the majesty of the human brain, the perfection in what might be considered imperfection if not under the protective title "Art". Extremely remarkable work, hats off to you sir.

  4. This doesn't only have to do with art, but our importance as individuals. I loved your comment saying that if we all thought the same, there really would be one very similar museum. Great piece!

  5. I like all the deep ideas you came up with in this piece, very interesting take on art. Sometimes I wonder if artist just think to themselves, let's see how much they pay for my scribbles and strokes this time, when in my eyes it looks like the work of a sophisticated first grader. Art definitely lies in the eye of the beholder. Nice job!

  6. Personally I don't really get art, but I can tell what art is. Wheneve I go into a musuem or see a piece of art or "art" I usually judge it by appearance. The thought put into this piece is very deep and it conveys how much someone has to think about what "modern" art truly is and if our sense of art is just over-analysing one color. -Brian Rojas

  7. I really liked how you connected different concepts of art forms and brought it all together to the individual and how we are constantly changing in our ways of thinking and how we express things.

  8. Your perception on art is very interesting. It reminded me about the Latin phrase "E pluribus unum" (Out of many, one). I always figured art holds many interpretations and it would be wrong to assume just one thing of a persons creation. At the end of the day, it is those many interpretations that solely define art. Your essay does a great job in describing this.

  10. I really like how you tied your own thoughts of the blue painting into your overall message of your piece. A piece of work inspired by ideas without worrying about details will always be beautiful. Nice job!

  11. Very lovely idea and a lovely way to have been written. Art is never to be truly understood, and to think so is quite..childish. Once one understands this, art becomes an object worthy to be compared to the beauty of the stars. Great job.

  12. I completely agree with you when you say that you never know what's going on in the mind of an artist when they make a work of art. Great piece and keep up the great work. :)

  14. While thinking about originality I think about that episode of Fairly odd parents where timmy wishes for everyone to be the same and everyone becomes a gray blob and the SAT prompt on whether originality is important. Good topic. Thank you for your submission.

  15. This was a very though provoking piece. I respect how well you challenged critical analysis concepts. I always excepted how critics labeled works of art, but this piece open my eyes and brain to, well, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

  19. "Luckily, this gives some less beautiful individuals, like myself, some hope for the future." You're beautiful just the way you are, Patel. Anyways, your work is thought-provoking to say the very least. You give a wonderful insight on your idea of art. Art is an incredibly vast subject and the beauty of a piece truly is within its own imperfections.

  25. After reading this piece, I think I've explored the often underrated yet most beautiful aspect of art we often neglect to see. Art is such a simplistic word but it encapsulates everything and anything that serves as a mode of expression and individualism and I think that's what makes it so valuable. It's amazing that no matter how many times I perform the same song on stage, it becomes my own piece of art, with every subtle change in tone, dynamic, and even expression. Your eloquence and sophisticated language made it all the more enjoyable to read and learn from! And don't worry, I'm terrible at drawing too! Nice work!

  31. Your piece reminds me greatly of a comic strip from Ad Reinhart's "How to Look at Art, Arts & Architecture" where he says "An abstract painting will react to you if you react to it. You get from it what you bring to it. It will meet you half way but no further. It is alive if you are. It represents something and so do you. YOU, SIR, ARE A SPACE TOO." I love your almost "romantic" choice of diction, and your personal insight on the perfectly imperfect. Awesome work!

  33. The thoughts on interpretation are refreshing. I'm glad that there are other people who feel the same way about how we interpret things in todays society. It makes you wonder who the true artist is. Is it the one who created the piece, or is it the one that gives the piece its interpretation?

  40. Ya, man. I feel what you're saying and agree with your thoughts. We only fall into a narrative and hardly recognize that each work is held dear to an artist, and not just writers but also in other forms of art. Really enjoyed reading your opinion.

  42. I'm kind of speechless. This was truly an awesome piece. It is a bit bizarre that a form of art can be manipulated by the perception of another. I guess that is what makes art art though; the creator fulfills his interpretation and the observers do the same, never in the same way.

  43. Dangit Josh, always so deep. I love the fact that you took the time to even familiarize yourself with all these art museums and such because i find that too often, art gets pushed under the rug throughout our years of public education. Mad respect. Also, I appreciate that you didn't allow your own biases to invade your understanding of what art means. It takes a truly advanced mind to push past our own prejudices. So, great job and also I might have fallen in love with you a little bit after reading this.

  44. I love the idea you give on what modern art really is. This was a great analysis on what individuality really is in its most fundamental form yet. I like your use of diction in the piece because it makes your thoughts appear so advanced and intellectual. Good Job.

  51. I really agree that art is interpreted differently by the beholder, but sometimes like in the drawing example I personally sometimes we do or can make a replication of it in a rather equal of maybe better form. But the concept you gave of Modern art was really good with a lot of support and insight. Good job!
