The Lesson--Tiffaney

I'd say I've endured many eye opening experiences throughout my eighteen years of life. While
many of these experiences have been incredibly beautiful, bringing laughter and tears of joy to
my eyes, others have left me in great heartache, fear, and pain. Through each and every one of
these moments I've been enlightened with a very important lesson about life. Since the
beginnings of my entire existence I've been learning these valuable life lessons. I even get to
teach a few; to my younger siblings. Lessons such as “stealing is wrong”, “be patient” and “try
ketchup on your fries, because everyone likes ketchup, and if you don't try it, you'll never know if
you like it”. Yes, my little brother is terrified putting ketchup on anything. I too have been taught
these important life lessons, and I am hoping you have as well.
I've taken notice that once we learn a lesson, we usually don't need to re-learn it, because once
the second time comes around, you know better than you did before. Once a child learns that
stealing is wrong, more often than not, they will always know that stealing is wrong; however,
these morals don’t always stop children from stealing. Let's admit, we've all been that kid at the
grocery store that thought taking this one Kit Kat bar, this one and only time couldn't hurt
anybody. In conclusion, we humans seem know right from wrong, the correct paths to take in
life, yet almost unconsciously take a different route.
I'd like to share a very important lesson that I've learned throughout multiple experiences in my
life. Perhaps it's one of the most valuable lessons I've ever been taught; however, much like the
kid and with the Kit Kat bar, I've ignored and neglected this lesson every day of my life thus far.
To save you from any further suspense, the lesson is, “live each day as if it were your last,
because tomorrow is not guaranteed”. I know, what a cliché. You were probably expecting
something much more profound; however, honestly, it couldn't be more true. I've learned this
lesson through watching countless life-threatening catastrophes on T.V. I've learned this lesson
by witnessing multiple family members of mine pass away much too soon. Family whom I was
convinced would be present for the rest of my life, or at least a majority of it. With memories to
be made and words left unspoken, I am extremely regretful for not spending my last moments
with those people like they were our last. I do not truly know what my last day would look like, I
couldn't create such a day if I tried. Yet I do know, that on my last day, I would want those
unspoken words to be spoken and those memories to be made with my loved ones. I would
want to have accomplished all my dreams, be left with no worries, and to live in the present
moment.
Still, I sit here with the mindset that I always have tomorrow, as if it were promised. I willingly
give a checklist of my life goals to a tomorrow that I may not live to see.
I continue to only hope, that once my final day has approached, I will have broken this habit of
stealing Kit Kat bars.

  1. I really love how you compare something small to a huge lesson in life. I also love your small comedic reliefs throughout the writing. I really enjoyed this because I totally agree that you should live today as if there is no tomorrow. Great job! -Lisa

  2. First of all, I've stolen a kit kat bar as a kid. Second, I truly love your message about living in the present. As a stressful high school student, I find myself stressing over many situations that will affect me in the future. Especially with college apps and everything, I worry about the future too much. However, this personal narrative really got me to take a step back, breathe, and make sure to enjoy the time I am experiencing right now. For instance, I'm about to graduate high school soon which is what I've been looking forward to ever since I've entered high school. However, I know that once I've graduated, I'm actually going to miss high school to some extent. Thank you for sharing this very important message.

  4. I agree 100%. Too many people really do take advantage of this life and when I say that I mean that they don't appreciate what they have right in front of them or that they aren't thankful for what they have or don't have. Your use of examples really helped you develop your whole point, good job!

  6. Everything you’ve said here was spot on. I know that the term “YOLO” is so overused, but it’s right. We have to learn how to help benefit ourselves as we go on this journey throughout life to not forget the most important things. Life is something we all take for granted. We just need to remind ourselves that it’s not a toy for us to be messing around with.

  7. I think that your take on life is so spot on. You really never know when everything can change and life can't be taken for granted. Good job!

  8. I enjoyed your insightful take on the cliché, “live each day as if it were your last" because most people fail to do so. I also liked how you made it personal and tied it in with the Kit Kat joke.

  9. I love how you put "live each day as if it were your last" because I believe that not a lot of people see living that way, and it is very important to live it to the fullest. - Martina Panganiban

  11. I have never stolen a kit kat, but I sure have eaten a bunch when my parents said I wasn't supposed to. Everyone has heard "live each day as if it were your last, because tomorrow is not guaranteed" at least once and it's often deemed as cliche, but honestly people take for granted most of the good in their lives and should learn to "live as if there's no tomorrow." Because as cliche as it may sound, it makes sense to make the most out of life each and every single day.

  12. I loved your piece! What struck me most was your commentary on creating a list for the next day; I do that almost daily. How I see it: if tomorrow doesn't come for me, what I accomplished the previous day is irrelevant in death. Everything is irrelevant in death; it's very comforting to think, personally!

  13. I loved your piece! I couldn't help but laugh because I stole candy as a kid as well. But your overall message that life is much too short is such an important lesson to learn since many people catch themselves straying away from amazing opportunities out of fear but fail to realize the value of their days. Thank you so much for sharing this lesson with us, it truly got me to realize that I need to cherish life!

  14. I too can relate to the statement you explained in your article. I am aware of family members who did not treat each other the best way and relationships remained disconnected when someone passed. It is important to always tell others how much you love them no matter the circumstances.

  16. That title first was a nice start!! It was "click bait" but not , if that makes sense... Anyways, nice message put through the passage. It's important to take in, and learn because opportunities fly out of the door so easily. Nicely done!!

  20. What made me like this story the most was the way in which you shared your personal experiences. Instead of pretending to have understood the importance of life from the beginning, you shared how you came to these conclusions. It made the story very relate-able for me; though I have never stolen specifically a Kit Kat Bar, I have taken multiple of my brother's toys when I was a child.

  25. This story made me laugh in a good way because it reminded me of my mom who always told me to "stop and smile, be grateful, and thank god each morning for being able to wake up again and live another day. I think it's refreshing that in our chaotic and stressful time of college applications and finals to be reminded that we still need to take time and live life and not just mindlessly go through it because we will never have this day again. Thank you

  28. This narrative really expresses the multitude of things we take for granted and how each of our personal experiences build up into developing our morals and personality as a whole. Your life lesson of enjoying life for every moment really applies to us students who believe that all we should do is to go and mindlessly finish assignments, instead of actually savoring every aspect of these, years, because as time passes we will never have the same experiences again.

  29. I really like your approach of showing how the lessons we learn are life long lessons that we as humans learn to live a healthy and sustaining life. I like you thought process as it parallels mine, I tend to look at human behavior and why the things we deem "right" are, in fact, the "right" way in our world. Imagine how differently we would live if we all learned lessons such as "stealing is good" Great though provoking piece.

  35. I honestly loved reading this piece because I felt like I could really relate to it. It's funny what you said about the Kit Kat because I remember those same thoughts of taking ONE piece of candy replaying in my mind as a kid. But you know we grow and we learn and I think everyone can agree that we should live every day to the fullest and that we shouldn't take anything for granted. This is a great piece and it really helps you realize how precious every moment in life is. Good job!

  38. I like the recurring motif of the kit kat bars. Usually we never quite get that these small little lessons that seem inconsequential in our lives turn out to be the pillars of human morals and you capture that nicely. Living in the present is really all we can do and you make it seem so logical. Really nice piece.
