Hooked--Layla

Laying in bed, she realized, love is just a glorified addiction. Hers is him. Addiction is the condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing, or activity. In school, she was warned about the addictive qualities of drugs and alcohol. No one ever told her she could become addicted to a person.
Most addicts don’t feel complete and experience withdrawal unless they’re taking, using, or doing what they’re addicted to. She, felt incomplete and her heart ached when they were apart. An addict becomes hooked on their dependency just as she craved and became dependent on him. People become addicted because their habit makes them feel good. She fell in love with him because he made her feel good.
The only real difference is when they come to realize their situations. When someone realizes they’re addicted to something (and need help), they try to quit that habit. When she realized she was “in love” with him, she decided she wanted to spend the rest of her life with him.
She needs him. She’s hooked.

  1. Very short, yet vary powerful. It actually can connect in a ways to Maria's piece of controlling feelings. Depency is dangerous, it is very addictive, and it degrades self worth and purpose. This was really touching and meaningful.

  2. This was really interesting. I like the contradiction at the end between wanting to stop an addiction versus wanting to be in love forever. Very nice outlook on love and I think one that many people can relate too. (:

  3. I enjoyed this piece, not only was it short and sweet. However, it described a story that I had no prior knowledge about and how your emotions can take an affect upon your life. Being addicted to something/someone can cause you to lose sight on your self and rely on whatever you are addicted to. Overall, great job to you!

  4. I felt like you did a really good job in expressing the parallelism between the addiction of a substance and the addiction of a person. I could relate to your piece and I enjoyed it a lot

  5. very good piece, you are completely right. humans tend to get addicted to not only drugs and alcohol but some of the worse addictions are those to people. Depending on the presence of others to find comfort and happiness is dangerous.

  6. Different than what I expected this flash fiction to be about, based on the title, but I genuinely enjoyed reading it. A very powerful piece, as stated before in another comment, but I have no other way to describe it. It was a great realization of how love is an addiction, and it can be interpreted both in a good and/or bad way.

  7. This piece was very thought provoking, I have never thought of love as an addiction before but the more I think about it the more it makes sense. I greatly enjoyed this piece, and it was written very well! -jacob

  8. This hit home... It truly is crazy how you can "love" someone so much that at a very young age you feel like you want to spend eternity with them. Eternity is a very long time. It is so long that us as human beings cannot even begin to process exactly what forever is. Another concept that is hard to grasp is the fact that once one person decides that they don't want you anymore, it becomes easier to let go of that said person. This piece exemplifies a one sided relationship in which "he" was not hooked as "she" was. Something that I am curious about is due to her realization, is that "her" realizing that she has an addiction and needs help?

  9. I like how you left the ending open ended but foreshadowed as well as paralleled the destructive attachment of drugs to that of a relationship while also expressing the naive thoughts and knowledge people experience in relations and the painful bonds and heartache that come with losing that "drug" that we call love. I really liked the piece.

  10. Very Intriguing,

This was a very interesting read because of my immediate situation. We are in high school and as far as relationships go, they haven't been great. I guess what I'm trying to say is, I've never really felt love for someone that deeply. I understand as Students still in school, "love" is something people don't quite understand. But not feeling it is something entirely different. Your writing really made me want to try harder to figure out what love is. << THAT SEEMS SAD, but I'm dead serious. I'm glad that this has given me another perspective on what love is. :p

Thanks for helping me better understand,

    -Deacon Ortiz

Although this was short, your story ironically had me hooked. The first sentence of your piece captivated me and was a very interesting opinion and take on love. Great choice of words and a very powerful meaning.

  12. I really like how you compared an obsession with a lover to addiction. The story may have been short but it did an excellent job at showing me the mindset of someone who is completely addicted to a loved one.

  13. Although the piece was short, it was very powerful and intriguing. Addictions are dangerous but no one ever talks about being addicted to a person. The story was very captivating and eye opening. Great job! -Leslie Marquez

  14. This is very interesting as it deals with a topic seen as bad, except the addiction is an addiction of love, which is typically seen as a good thing. It brings interesting thoughts to mind and this poem is worth a conversation with someone about addiction of love/falling in love.

  19. Good analogy between love and addiction, which many can relate to and understand, even though we students are young. The title of your piece "hooked" me to read it and I'm glad I did because of your insight into this thing we call love. You explained the comparisons between the effect love and effect of drugs to clarify the meaning of the work to the audience, and it was easy to read with no misunderstandings. Awesome job!!

  22. beautiful! i wouldn't have been able to word it any other way, love is/should be treated like an addiction when it becomes toxic, but i also love the way you conveyed that there is always a good and bad side to thing even love. its not usually something that would be portrayed as a negative thing but you did it perfectly while also keeping the positive side and intertwining them like yin and yang.

  25. I really loved this piece because yes it was short but it conveyed so much. I really like how you compared the denoation of the word "addiction" and the associations it has with it to that of a relationship. Addiction can have this negative connotation yet it can also it can have this positive connotation which was demonstrated very well throughout the writing. - Alexia

  26. I loved your short story it was very powerful in just a short amount of words. Especially being able to relate to being "addicted" to a person its honestly so hard to stop loving them or wanting to see them even if you know its for your greater good. Fantastic story!!!! -Jazmine Hernandez Period 2

  27. Wow... that left me in shock. We have come to glorify the topic of love, depicting it with such an ideal lens in many movies, books, and other works. However, I loved how you took a more ambiguous approach. Love can be very addicting and controlling, but not always in a good way. Your work made me think about an abusive, destructive relationship where the girl repeatedly runs back to the guy because she can't help it, like a drug. Although, others may see it as a girl being so infatuated in a loving relationship, that she can't help but embrace it. Very thought provoking!

  28. Okay go off!! I didn't really feel like this was emotional but rather just very matter-of-factly, like she knew she was in love with him and she was addicted to him, but she didn't really mind it. Good job! -Diana Sainz

  29. I find it interseting that you put in love in quotations because many do not know the difference of what being in love and being in love with the idea of love is, especially with the influence of school & others. Your piece is very unique and I know many people of all ages can relate to your story in many ways.

  32. I really like this piece because this shows how you have no control over your emotions and anything could get you attached. Such a small amount of words that tell so much and have so much meaning and can relate to all. Good Job !- Chenel Moody

  33. Very short yet effective, your use of comparison to drugs really helped me as a reader understand her love and connect it to my own life and how an addiction may not always be "bad" or harmful". It all depends.

  34. This piece had such a big message written in such short piece. This was the first time I have ever heard/read about an addiction to a person. We would always talk about an addiction to drugs, alcohol, etc but never a person. The way you wrote this was amazing.
