Caleb--My Passion

Before Reading this I will admit, I have watched Blackfish I agree with and disagree with many things in that movie. If you’d like to debate about that see me in person I’d love to chat.

Like many young children, I developed a passion to work with killer whales when my parents took me to Sea World at the age of four.  A typical story, I know.  However, my story is not as conventional as you might think.  What makes this story distinct is that I have remained whole-heartedly committed to my dream.

I remember the first time I went to Sea World as a child.  I was in the car with my mother, father, and two older cousins.  The two-hour trip made me even more anxious to arrive at our destination.  As we approached, I could see the park from the freeway and my excitement increased.  We finally arrived, parked the car and began our trek into the theme park.  As I entered the gates, I could smell the salt water in the air, hear the smooth jazz music in the background, and the noises from other excited children.  We walked toward “Shamu Stadium.”  There I saw the most incredible animal - a creature enormous in size, with smooth black skin, a white underside, and complementary white patches…the killer whale.  As it swam past me, I could see the muscles under the skin working effortlessly to perform its movements.  I was in a state of awe.  I then left “Shamu Stadium” and visited other animals in the park: dolphins, beluga whales, seals, and a myriad of other aquatic creatures.  Each had its own unique characteristics and environment and every time I saw a new animal, I had the same reaction.  By the end of day, a passion had been sparked in me that would not be quenched.  I wanted to spend my life working with marine animals.

To this very day, I remain committed to my dream, which will soon become my reality.  I have spent the last several years in preparation.  I studied numerous documentaries on the ocean and performed countless hours of research on many different aquatic animals.  I also became a junior lifeguard and devoted myself to that program, which positioned me to become a fully certified lifeguard.  Being a lifeguard helped me to become a strong swimmer, taught me many valuable life skills, and increased my love for the water.  I learned to be independent, responsible and developed a strong work ethic.  My love for the water and marine animals has greatly influenced my career choice, a goal to which I have been fully devoted.  I approach this next phase of my life with fortitude and tenacity ready to embrace the challenges ahead of me.

  1. I find that we both are currently working to make our passions our careers, and for that I have a lot of respect for you. It's so hard to find people like that nowadays, especially those have remained committed to their career choice from a very young age. I have no doubt you'll do great to where you're going Caleb.

  7. Props to you for sticking with your dream, though there has been controversy and negativity towards the captivity of those animals. We can all learn from this, there will be struggles in achieving our goals or dreams but thats what creates our drive to keep striving. Good job!

  8. Wow I like how you showed us both the roots and the fruits of your life. All this hard work towards the dream you got when you were young is now finally paying off. It's definitely not over but it's not just a dream anymore, it's a possibility in reality.

  10. Caleb, I will have to admit you have a LOT of guts publishing this piece, because a lot of people, including myself, have many problems with Sea World. But you know what, you keep doing what you are doing and don't let anyone step over your opinion. I truly did enjoy reading this piece, because it showed your determination, it showed me that you are willing to go beyond what is expected and venture out into the realms in which some people refuse to enter, to make a statement. And I say good for you, keep your head up, and I hope your life and journey treats you well. Who knows maybe one day you could change my opinion on Sea World. But for now Great job and thanks for showing me a new perspective. :D

  15. Your piece was great for a number of reasons. First off, you provided a great amount of detail in describing the feelings you had as a little kid and that was an excellent way to make the reader connect. But, what I admired most of all was the overall message, to set and goal and work hard until you achieve it. I think the work ethic you posses is something that our generation is lacking and it's great to see that some people still do. Well done!

  29. Your determination and willingness to chase after your passion of marine life is very inspiring. Truthfully, working with killer whales or any other sea creature bigger than a gold fish sounds terrifying. It is good of you to research them in person so the rest of us dont have to :P

  32. In a sense I can relate to you because when I was younger I had such devotion to saving animals, specifically whales. Being so disgusted with the cruelty whales faced, I poured my heart out and actually wrote a letter to the president at the time. I know, a little too much... It's refreshing to know someone will stop at no ends to have a career that truly makes them happy. I wish the best of luck to you in your journey. -Natalie Cruz

    1. To be quite honest if you do your own research and truly investigate the situation with whales and animals in captivity. One thing that makes me angry is the fact that everyone assumes that Blackfish is 100% fact. When actually it's not. I do agree that many things companies have done in the past were wrong but new they are in so many better conditions. And besides what can you do? Majority of all captive animals are all born in captivity and cannot simply be placed into the ocean. One thing though that I Will stand by is that if I finally get to where I want I will immediately leave if I don't agree with the treatment of the animals. But I do see your side.
