How to: Follow the unwritten rules
Oh yes, there are invisible rules, enforced by courtesy and judgment shaping our everyday actions, possessing power though they be not written down. Allow me to elucidate.
1.       Absorb stupidity in silence.
2.       Wear what is hot and happening.
3.       Speak only when what you have to say is socially acceptable.
4.       Lie.
5.       Cheat.
6.       Steal.
7.       Bully.
8.       Hate.
9.       Be who others want to see.
10.   And last but not least, eat your veggies!
Above are the 10 most commonly followed rules which I needed to write down just in case others had utterly no idea what in the great wide world I am attempting to direct us all on. Now for the how to aspect of the assignment, I will elaborate on each rule and give a scenario of sorts just in case you, the reader attempt to refute my claim.
1.       Ever been in one of those situations where you are utterly blown away by what another is saying. Not due to the, uh how should I say, insight provided but by the utter stupidity reiterated again and again believing the repetition will pound their opinion into our head, shove their beliefs down our throats so we can join them in what is right. How to respond? Bite that tongue friends! Bite that buddy ‘til it bleeds if you have to, but never, ever refute for that may create an altercation which must be avoided at all costs. I know, I know. “But what of my opinion Sarrah?” Please refer to rule number three.
2.       Ever notice how suddenly, everyone is wearing the same thing? High waisted why I saw on those on Jessica, no Rebecca, no Jonathan, oh wait. Everyone. Cool shirt. I think I saw that…on me? Oh yeah, that’s happened. Don’t blame yourself. We don’t mean to follow these rules.
3.       Ever held an opinion of your own? You’re entitled it to it, so I’ve heard, but please. Don’t share. But what do I say when asked? Oh look, the answer resides in rule four.
4.       Lie. “I would never!” Are you sure? You never told a younger sibling that Santa was real? You never told someone their hair was nice when in reality it looked like your dog coughed it up? No one has ever lied in saying, everything will be okay?
5.       “Hey Billy, buddy, what’s number five?” Crack open your eyes, or open your fingers just a little bit to see that piñata, move your pawn forward some, take a little extra money from that monopoly bank, eat that meat you swore off, take one more drink.
6.       Ever loved someone’s ideas or words so much that you stole them? Never give that pencil back? Don’t worry, you didn’t mean it. Warlords, stealing people’s safety and terrorist stealing our peace of mind. Fate stealing our loved ones. They weren’t ours in the first place.
7.       How else do you expect to get what you want? What you deserve? To feel good about yourself?
8.       Look at how he acts, he thinks he is the s h I t. Do you hate that? But that is such a strong word! Obviously not when people use it every day to express their golden thoughts about someone that has never done anything to them. Only logical!
9.       Ever sat alone at lunch. Doesn’t that suck? Conform dumbo, hang out with that cool crowd. You’re the only one to blame.
10.   This one is a given. You can’t grow without them.

  2. Ohhhhhh Sarrah! I never get tired of hearing your thoughts on the world!!!So wait are these rules truly supposed to be followed becasue the "wear what is hot and happening" just isnt working in my life at the moment. I blame you though cause you shared with me the awsomeness of 80's outfits and knittted sweater vests. Yes I agrree with the "Be who others want you to be" because obviously blending in is always the best way. Why stand out when you were born to blend in?( note the sarcasm) Oh but the eat your veggies rule ...well I kinda like veggies so that rule can stay. Okaaaay but seriously Sarrah your post was awesome and so well written! I would love to read/hear more on the unwritten rules of society!

  3. 11. Go to school.
What a silly institution. Think of all the booty shorts I wouldn't have to see if I didn't attend school.

  8. OK WOW. Just amazing! At first, i thought i was going to be scolded and make myself rethink my ways but then it took a 360 turn and now the way you relate it to your readers, i felt like my actions to fit in are justified. You explained the reality of another reality, like everyone says to not conform to society but you explain the reality of why it is important to us to conform... BRAVO

  15. Hilarious. I love how this fits with the comedy/satire section we're learning. I also liked how everything you said flowed smoothly, I could read behind the lines and got the real meaning. Awesome!

  16. This was a great read to fully enjoy and laugh at. I really liked how you included examples for each rule that we are all able to relate to.

  17. I was not aware of these rules (except for veggies, GO VEGGIES!). This was funny! I love this. Good work Sarrah.

  21. Well i liked how you stated your opinion about "the rules we follow" and i also liked when you broke it down some more, but there was some rules of yours i didnt quite agree with so it left me a bit flustered, but in that sense it made emotion come out of the reader and thats the number one thing you notice if the piece you read was good or not

  22. wow this was really amazing and I loved the examples you gave to explain each rule. I could relate to some of the things you were talking about. This piece was really good.

  23. I thought this was funny! It definitely kept me on board. I also, as others have put is so, have heard your voice in the background. It's really fascinating!

  25. This how to seemed more like a rant or a lecture ...I felt like I was getting in trouble for.following rules I didn't know I was following. I think it was creatively ironic that as you were teaching people what to do it was implied that you wanted dad them to not do those things.

  26. Wow this is just great! It made me laugh and I could just hear your voice reading it aloud haha very well written! :)

  27. This reminded me of that one time you read one of your monologues in Latin last year. Apart from being hilarious, you send a real message and you're good at making people think things over. Atta girl ;)

  28. aha what an abstract mind you got, its all over the place which is much better than being normal ... you've got talent here :)

  29. What an entertaining piece! Great job!

  30. This was very comical!

  31. Yupp that conforms with all our high school experiences in some way. But good job using humor/satire to get that across or else it would have been a more pessimistic piece.

  32. Wow haha this was pretty great! How ironic that it fits the satire section in a way. The list format was very enjoyable to read.

  33. this is easily one of the most trolliest thing i have ever read. i was literally dying the whole way through

  34. This was beautifully written. The sad part is, despite us not liking some of those things that are such a major part of our everyday life, we not only feed into it, but even support it. Its a shame, but this piece hits reality right on the head

  35. I have never read anything like this... I liked it! I personally enjoyed number 6 the most, because it's true. People steal all the time, even if it's the smallest things like a pencil.. and we even steal the non-material things, like words! Good job.

  36. This was so great! Those were really good rules you came up with and I think you hit each one right on the head when describing them!

  37. wow, okay, I love the way you aren't afraid to show everyones thoughts about the different subjects

  38. I truly enjoyed your work for. It took a whole new perspective into the occurances of our daily routines. You presented a target and attacked it with great humor and undoubtedly is the truth to our problems that we face as individuals trying to be part, mend and accept societal norms. I have to saw that you could have been a little more bold on your reasoning other than that you where the golden nugget to my fever.

  40. I was not expecting you to elaborate on each topic the way you did. For number 6, I thought you were going to talk about stealing because of peer pressure or something, but I wasn't expecting words. The way you explained each topic, made them more realistic and tangible. Also, your tone was perfect! It was humorous and satirical at the same time.
