Beauty (re)defined
Our whole lives, we have grown up with adult’s description of beauty as “it’s what’s on the inside that counts.” In elementary school, we were told that everyone was to be included, especially on Valentine’s Day. Like most classrooms across the country, the rule was, if you were going to give a card to one person, then you have to give everyone else a card as well. Entering into middle school this same message was implemented into our minds as well, with signs that read “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” But somewhere along the way, this idea that beauty was past the surface, was dropped. For most girls (and guys), the idealized image of beauty is to look like the model, Gisele Bündchen or soccer superstar, David Beckham. Drastic measures are taken to obtain this idealized image of beauty. Eye brows are waxed, faces re-sculpted, breast enhanced, and extreme dieting measures taken. But what if beauty truly is “what’s on the inside that counts?”
Once the superficiality of looks and images are cast aside, beauty becomes something much more capturing and intimate. Ask any man truly in love with his wife what makes her most beautiful and I doubt he would say her looks. Actress Amanda Peet, puts it well “Beauty is only skin deep. If you go after someone just because she's beautiful but don't have anything to talk about, it's going to get boring fast.” Beauty is the mother who hasn’t slept in weeks but still gets up in the middle of the night to check on her sleeping baby. Beauty is the flower that grows through the weeds, or even the weeds themselves, that have suffered much and still manage to grow. Beauty is the stars in the sky, which manage to shine bright, even on the darkest nights. Beauty is the giggle of a baby. Beauty is you.
In a society where so much focus is place on beauty, it’s dangerous to break away from the norm. Putting focus on looks isn’t bad but the real danger comes when outer beauty is placed on a much higher pedestal. True beauty is more than a size two jeans or having the clearest skin. Beauty is generosity and good will to neighbors. Beauty is a smile. Beauty is dancing in the rain. Beauty is not caring whose watching. Beauty is confidence. Beauty is you.
Sometimes true beauty is hard to come by. It’s not easy to discover what true beauty is because, often the definition of it is so obscure. Conformity and fitting in is most important to the superficial idea of beauty, but true beauty is much more. True beauty is the willingness to take a stand for something, it’s the ability to laugh and be real. True beauty can’t be confined to a set of standards in which a few select people decide what’s beautiful and what’s not. Beauty isn’t pain. It doesn’t require lipstick. It doesn’t need to be bought. Beauty only needs to be brought out into the open. Beauty from the inside isn’t a norm in society. Walls have to be torn down. People need to see that beauty is more than being voted sexiest man or women alive. Those who go against the norms of society have always been thought to weird or strange but who know, maybe once and for all, it truly will be “what’s on the inside that counts.”
i loved it! All of those examples, specifics and relations are great support for your topic. The repetition of "Beauty is you" is a great way to reinforce your theme that beauty is less about looks because not everyone looks the same. I just loved it!
ReplyDeleteWell Im not sure if Im supposed to comment on my own post so I am just in case! If anybody wants to, comment about your definition of beauty and what beauty means to you. Aynbody disagree with my definition? What are your thoughts? Oh and there is a great website on beauty if anybody wants to check it out : http://www.operationbeautiful.com/ Thanks:)
ReplyDeleteBeauty really is you Elizabeth this post was soo adorable! I loved it because seriously there shouldnt be a standard for beauty and I love how you captured that. Stay golden darlin!
ReplyDeleteThis. Was. Perfect. I really wish everyone else embraced your definition of beauty. I feel like the world would be a much happier place if we saw the inner beauty and not just the outer beauty. :)
ReplyDeleteI think you really did well tying it all together and putting your foot down for the definition you believe in. I think that you were able to give a clear and persuasive view point on the matter, good job.
ReplyDeleteI seriously love abstract idea. Im pretty sure we can all relate to this. "Beauty is the mother who hasn’t slept in weeks but still gets up in the middle of the night to check on her sleeping baby." That's so beautiful, because it is so true. There is so much unseen beauty in the world, and it breaks my heart to see it go by! Thanks so much for sharing this. <3
ReplyDeleteWow! *** Claps****Elizabeth! i love this whole Abstracted Idea of what really Beauty is. I agree with this! Beauty is not whats in the outside it mainly in the inside. I believe that EVERYBODY is Beautiful, and the things they tend to worry about are just the "norms of society" nowadays because so much of our own society are being judged based on their looks to satisfy the public's needs, but i think its better if our society looks through a glass mirror and realize that we are all different and we are Beautiful in our own ways, no MATTER what.
ReplyDeleteJust like what Oscar Wilde has said, " Be Yourself. Everyone else is already taken." Beauty is in the heart, not the looks, it is the ability to be yourself and be who you are as an individual in society. Stand Out and Be Proud because we are blessed to be BEAUTIFUL!
I love that you give your own definition of beauty. It makes me take a look at myself, good job!
ReplyDeleteI really this. I like how this is such a controversial topic, but you were able to explain it in your view in such a descriptive way. I love your definition of beauty :)
ReplyDeleteI think you have the best definition of beauty. I really liked that "Beauty is only skin deep..." quote!
ReplyDeleteBeauty is always such a hard topic to cover because of how many different ways it can be determined. However, in one page you managed to cover all the details to it and the different aspects of beauty. I think your definition was spot on and it opens up the human eye to all the different ranges of beauty that come with being human. This was definitely a confidence booster to me for the day...now I feel BEAUTIFUL!!!!
ReplyDeleteBeauty is... Its the strength it takes for a father to place the care of his daughter into the hands of her husband. Its the giggle that can't help but escape from your lips. Its the constant sacrifices families make to support eachother. That's what I think anyways ..I loved your piece Elizabeth "Beauty is you ":)
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU!
ReplyDeleteI wish more people than just our English classes could read your work. Great job :)
THANK YOU!
ReplyDeleteI wish more people than just our English classes could read your work. Great job :)
Wow, this was pretty epic. I wish more people appreciated others for their personalities rather than their appearance. Of course, Proactive would go out of business, but to heck with them. They don't know real beauty. This essay was real beauty. Good job Elizabeth.
ReplyDeleteIts amazing how beauty has many different explanations but I absoultly love this peice you've written!
ReplyDeleteyour definition of beauty was... beautiful!;p hahah but this was amazing! i loved your definition of beauty! all of your examples helped support your idea of "whats on the inside that counts" amazing job!!
ReplyDelete*tears*
ReplyDeleteI liked the way you described socially constructed ideas of beauty and it's powerful effect it has today. I also loved the quote about beauty being only skin deep. Beauty fades within time but your character stays with you and that's what's most important.
Your perspective of beauty really is interesting. A common misinterpretation made by society turned into a fascinating blog post. I feel your writing style to be very influential and possibly a very unique tool. You should really think about writing more for fun! I feel you would become something greater.
ReplyDeletethe true definition of beauty is me. but this was well written in explaining your viewpoints and i liked it goodjob!
ReplyDeleteThis was so perfect, I loved it so much! Great job writing from so many different viewpoints.
ReplyDeleteThis was amazing! It's great to read a piece on a topic such as this, and see how down to Earth writers are! Great job!
ReplyDeleteI THINK THIS IS MY FAVORITE PIECE IVE READ THIS YEAR
ReplyDeleteI ABSOLUTELY love the message you've fully accomplished with your essay or whatever form this is called lol. So many people especially girls go through trying to fit in to the "norm" as you'd say it when being an original is so much better than being a copy. I love the title because you're speaking the truth. This is the true definition of beauty, but sometimes it isn't the accepted definition of beauty.
PERFECT JOB :D
flippen elizabeth. Get the heck outta here you cootie patootie! Goodness I just want to hug and squeeze ya. You had no reason to be nervous about this piece, i absolute love and apparently everyone else does too:) I love abstract ideas and i agree that this was a wonderful choice. People are taken by the facade of beauty, and it's not only people but products as well, animals, clothes, trees, rugs, homes, heck even toilets! I appreciate you. I know i constantly tell you how beautiful you are, but i hope you know i always mean it in earnest. Beauty is the house that breaks but remains a home, beauty is honesty, beauty is courtesy, generosity, imagination, natural ability, mistakes, uncertainty for they all make us that more real, the blush on our cheeks, the scars in our eyes and on our hearts. thank you for sharing:)
ReplyDelete*slow clap* That...was...amazing. It's amazing to see a whole new look at beauty. *still slowly clapping*
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you have to say and some of your examples were just top notch, i like the way you think because not all of us think this way it is true that personality is overlooked by your exterior looks and its sad to say but thats the reality of it. Maybe, hopefully one day some people will bring this to light and change their ways of judgement. I hope you keep writing and submitting more of these thoughts you have because its nice to read someone who thinks alike.
ReplyDeleteBeauty in the media or even our generation is over speculated, wasting our efforts trying to get the perfect curls in our hair or getting make up painted on properly. But you sympathize with the superficial effect and observe that beauty is something we see everyday, not typically shown by the television shows we watch.
ReplyDeleteThis was fantastic! I couldn't agree anymore and I'm glad you took the time to express what true beauty is.
ReplyDeleteThe way you gave your own meaning of beauty is excellent opened my eyes to a different aspect of it
ReplyDeleteI think this was my favorite peice of literature, the topic was perfect and it made me want to keep reading. Great job!
ReplyDeletethis is abstract and indicates how much potential you really have. what a great piece of literature
ReplyDelete*single tear rolls down cheek while reading* this was really god and heartfelt. just the way the story is written and laid out i can tell that this is something you genuinely believe to to be true great job
ReplyDeleteWow if everyone in the world could think like you half the problems in our society probably wouldnt even exist. Thank God for people like you it gives this world some hope.
ReplyDeleteI like how you share your definition of beauty and write from multiple perspectives. very interesting
ReplyDeleteI loved the part where you talked about "Beauty is the mom that hasn't slept in weeks...", those little examples made it extremely easy for us to relate to what you were saying and think about the people that we see as "beautiful" and WHY we see them that way. Nice job Elizabeth :)
ReplyDeletet it was beautiful the way you describe beauty and I agree 100%
ReplyDeleteIt's really courageous that you took the idea of beauty and gave us a clear definition of beauty. With you argument and constant repettiton you really kept me attained, you had a powerful voice and a clear thought. At this point I do agree with that "what counts is in the inside".........but thats what ugly people say!...:).....I am just playing, I have heard that joke beafore and thought of bringing it, hope it did not offened any one.....coming back... I bealive that the actual person to blame os the media sonce its through them that we give our selves these high expectations and demand for beauty, which deterriates a handfull of lives in both women and men, and this bgins as we become more exposed. I would like you to see this video

The underlining purpose is that we simply hide ourselfves into what we as you said consider the norm. In other words great piece.
I absolutely love this because it is absolutely true! Beauty is what is on the inside not the outside. "Beauty is you" I love it!
ReplyDeleteI loved how you had many different ways of explaining it! I wish more people realized this kind of beauty! Great Job!
ReplyDeletei really enjoyed it great job
ReplyDeleteThe various viewpoints made the read so good and invigorating!
ReplyDeleteI really loved the whole thing! I completely agree that beauty is way beyond looks! This was such a good topic and i think you explained it perfectly!
ReplyDeleteGreat job on providing your own view of the subject while at the same time understanding the view point others.
ReplyDeleteI prefer your definition of beauty rather than societies. Great Job!
