Human. Noun. Scientific term: “Homo sapiens.” Definition: “A bipedal primate
mammal.”
Human. Adjective. Definition: “A characteristic of people as opposed to deities, animals,
or machines, especially in being susceptible to weakness.” Synonym: “Imperfect.”
This is the dictionary definition of the word human. These few words are apparently what it takes to define the lives we live as the “bipedal primate mammals” that we are. But what does it truly mean to be “human”? Is it purely just waiting for each day to turn to night? Or is it something more complex than what a simple dictionary definition can describe?
The definition of a human could possibly never be explained in a simple sentence or even in a 10 page essay. This is simply because humans are individual complex beings. They aren’t a word. They aren’t a definition that you could just search on the internet. They aren’t the labels that they give themselves or the names that they are given by others. But somehow, we can all relate our journeys in one way or another due to what we experience in life, thus making us human.
One of these ways is that being human is also being inevitably imperfect. These flaws that we contain either within ourselves or in our vessels are what contributes to the meaning of being human. It forces ourselves to be critical of who we are. It allows us to find what pieces to keep, and the others that we need to reform to be better people. Each piece is different for everyone and this leads to differences among individuals within the population.
In this world of ours, we are trained to think that differences are evil. That differences could pose a threat to the balance of the world. When in reality, they keep this world intact. If everyone was the same, Earth would be a monochrome picture on an old television. We are a symphony of a disarray of colors. None of us are created perfectly and similarly. We’re all the same, just in different ways. That’s what I believe makes this world so interesting. It’s like reading books of multiple kinds of genres, authors, and times. Each person holds a story. And each story is worth reading. You know what they say, “you can’t judge a book by its cover.”
The emotions that we experience also make us human. Unlike many other organisms in the world that we live in, human beings have been fortunately granted the gift of sentience, but that also comes with the great emotional impacts that this provides. Emotions create who we are, such as contributing to the personality of each person in the world. Not only does it affect someone’s entire persona, but other’s lives as well. Being highly sentimental beings, humans are susceptible to experiencing emotions such as trauma, love, anger and so on due to other human beings around them.

Being imperfect, being flawed, being emotional, being loved, sad, hated, praised,
unappreciated, feeling hope, serenity, and so on and so forth are all what it means to be human.
Experiencing life’s ups and downs and u-turns, is something that although may be painful at
times, should be appreciated as it created and influenced every part of who you are.
But maybe you disagree with every word I’ve said so far and that is entirely valid.
Because part of your journey as a “bipedal primate mammal” is to find your very own meaning of what it means to be human.

I really enjoyed the topic of this piece as it was interesting and explained that being human is very complex. I also enjoyed the definitions of the word and references to their denotations. -Moises Reyes
ReplyDeleteI admired how your word choice was simple yet the sentence structure and the content within the sentences made the writing as a whole sophisticated. Great job using simple diction because it allowed the writer to connect with the audience, which is full of seniors, in a way that makes us sympathetic and sensitive towards the topic.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed how you started off with the simple denotation meaning of being human to the complex emotions and flaws that we experience which ends up creating who we really are.
ReplyDeleteI like how you introduce the topic with the dictionary definition of "human." This allowed you to go deeper into the definition and described several connotations, by suggesting that we are all the same but also very different. You also did a good job by connecting to the audience stating characteristics of our emotions. The conclusion was well-written by comparing the scientific term to the term "human" itself.
ReplyDeleteI like the way you described the journey of a human as a story, like how we all share the main components but we are all unique. This really puts the reader into perspective of a single human and their impact on the rich diversity of our world. Also reminds readers that each person you ever encounter has gone through their own personal journey, resulting in the person they are today. An interesting concept.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your piece and how it easily went with a simple definition of being a human and then began to talk about the wide complex arrange of emotions we have.-Donavhen Palos
ReplyDeleteI love how you touched on a topic that is very relevant in human society. You showed no fear in showcasing what you believe in which i respect very much. This essay was very definitive and really opened up the true meaning of being a human.
ReplyDeleteI admired how you dove into the complex and multi layered subject of being "Human", specifically when you addressed human individuality and societal conformity play a part in being "Human". The difference between the denotative meaning of human and your connotative meaning was worded beautifully and confidently.- Jewelianna Garcia
ReplyDeleteI really love how you picked a simple question (or so we thought), but came up with a complex answer. My favorite lines were, "We’re all the same, just in different ways," and "Each person holds a story. And each story is worth reading." Both of these quotes show how we as a society are connected (despite our differences) and that we all have a sense of value to our own story. I love the message of imperfection and finding oneself in our own lives.
ReplyDeleteI love how this piece goes deeper into being a "human being." This blog piece really emphasizes the term human and how we live. I love how you make sure that you include that none of us are perfect and that we all make mistakes as a human and that is what is part of being a human. Also, another cool thing that i didn't know about humans is the term in the last sentence that states that we are, "bipedal primate mammal." A new term always is fun to know especially about us humans.
ReplyDeleteI really loved reading this piece. The way you contrast the simple definition of what it means to be human versus the complex and emotional aspects was really well developed and nicely put. I also really loved the ending as you concluded on a positive note discussing the validity of disagreement - Samantha Jordan
ReplyDeleteThis piece really caught my attention because of you choice of a simple question with a complex and deep meaning. I especially enjoyed how you explained the importance of "imperfection" and "individuality" and how it "keeps the world intact."
ReplyDeleteThe diction within this piece is admirable. Your ability to take simple sentences and describe them in a detailed way is beautiful. For example, "we are a symphony of disarray colors". Sentences such as that give me no choice but to picture an actual symphony of colors, whatever that may look like. The idea that we are all the same in our differences is comforting to hear, and is not often thought of.
ReplyDeleteThis was extremely well-developed and insightful. The organization also could not have made this flow more smoothly. You were very on spot with the technicalities, but as for the content, you were exceptional. I love the philosophical take you took on this, and how much you delved into your psyche to understand the complexity of what it means to be human. Specifically, I really like the analogy you used with comparing the world (if we were all the same) to a monochrome picture on an old television. Really good job!! -Arianna Santos
ReplyDeleteGreat insight on how humans can't be defined by a couple of words because we are far more complex. I like how the abstract emphasizes that the little things are what make people unique. I also like the comparison of humans to books to show this as well as bring the message that we are all important in our own way.

I really admired your strategy in beginning your piece with a generic and literal definition of "human," which you later dive further into. The words you used in your piece truly bring the abstract fade in with the literal. Although your piece used simple words for readers to clearly understand, I feel the power in your piece because I somewhat relate to this piece on a personal level, as many of your readers do, I'm sure. Beautiful job! -Melanie Viernes
ReplyDeleteThis piece extremely insightful on the concept of what it means to be human, unlike many other living beings here on Earth, we are much more complex both mentally and physically. What I took from this work of art is to embrace being human and all of the flaws that may come with it, over time we must learn to accept who we are and understand that it is okay to not conform to societal standards and to live as we truly are which is human.
ReplyDeleteWell done on your piece. The method in which you took to transition your work from a seemingly normal, generalized definition to a well-developed discussion of the true qualities of what embodies the human not only was dazzeling, but was also insightful. Your analysis of the coming of differences between humans and how they developed was a mind twister and yet, at the same time, made quite a lot fo sense. Your further scrutiny of how humans are naturally imperfect and your comparision to how each is a story to be read continiously added to the spunk of your work. Once more, wonderdully executed.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the way you used the definition and scientific term of what human means, then went on to say what your own definition of what it means to be human. It was very insightful, I appreciated that you said emotions and and being imperfect is what makes us human. It was a very thought provoking piece and made me question my own definition of what it means to be human.
ReplyDeleteI like the way you brought what it’s like to be a human in a way I never really tried to comprehend. How you compared and contrasted the emotional, complex side vs the simplicity of how we ourselves view what it’s like to be human. Very insightful and good informative statements that get me really wondering what it takes to answer what it’s like to be human. - Khristian Castillejo
ReplyDeleteThis is a greatly developed idea. You made some valid points. That being human can't be to easily described. However you pulled it off in a matter of a page. The research you included also us the readers see where you were coming from.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this article for how enlightened it was. While it defines humans factually, it also goes on to define them is a more insightful way. The view that the author took is unmistakably accepting and broad. While it is simplified, it's still a complex topic, which the author makes very clear, especially by leaving room for disagreement and personal opinion on the definition of the human make-up.
ReplyDeleteOverall, the piece is very well written with a very admirable stance on the topic itself.
This was very well written piece, it was very insightful and extremely well developed.

I appreciated the deeper meaning of “Humans” that you conveyed . Additionally the thought provoking questions that allowed me , as the reader, to think about. Also I enjoyed the compare and contrast of Humans to other living organisms that further supported the deeper thought of Humans- Princess Ortiz
ReplyDeleteDanicaaaa, I love this! I loved that it reminds us what makes us human; I think it is so easy for us to forget. I notice it the most in honors students because we are the hardest on ourselves and our "failures" but we actually fail to see how that will better us, especially in the moment. So thank you for writing on this topic and reminding us it's okay to make mistakes and for others to make mistakes as well because it makes human and allows for overall growth. -Leah Robbins
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading this piece because it shows how cool it is to be human and how the topic explains humanity.

The way that you began this article with the dictionary definition of human was such a intriguing start to the article, and building the rest of the text on the relationship to the definition was truly unique. Your analysis and understanding of the human flaws was something that made me as a reader rethink what it actually does mean to be human, and that those imperfections are what build our characters. And ending the passage of with the line " But maybe you've disagreed with everything I've said so far " was truly effective.

I love the way that you approach this topic with the literal definition of what it is to be a human. Then throughout the writing you show that what it means to be a human is a lot more complicated and is filled with many difficult trials. I deeply enjoy that you conclude that being flawed is what makes us human and perfectly imperfect; then how you tell the reader that it is okay to disagree with your opinion because that is what makes us human. -Trenton Robles
ReplyDeleteThe motivational tone of this piece left me inspired and in awe. You effectively intrigued the reader through rhetorical questions and relatable statements. I particularly resonated with the line, "We are a symphony of a disarray of colors." because it was a clever way of saying how we as humans are united in our differences. I truly loved your piece, great job!
ReplyDeleteI truly enjoyed how down to earth and real this piece is, its very person-to-person and easy to understand. The "definition" of human life/our path of life is not possible in my opinion and that's exactly what the author brings out; in the ways of us all being able to have our own paths but all being human and being one of a kind, as a giant whole. It's honestly really eye-opening in the ways of seeing how there are such basic words like human, that have such complex "definitions".
ReplyDeleteStarting with the dictionary definition and ending with emotions tied into the definition brought the piece together very well. The piece was thought-provoking because it gave the definition, but called everything into question, making us readers reflect on ourselves and society. I also really liked the part at the end where you acknowledged people disagreeing with what you've said because it causes us readers to think even more.

The one thing that I admire about this piece is that you were able to put any scientific research you found and applied that to your short story about being "Human". The way you bring out the bad and good about what a human is and or does really stood out out me the most only because I'm in Peer Counseling and I notice when the bad and goods happen in the school. The fact that you took the time to go out of your way to do research on human behavior really grabbed my attention to your research/short story. -Jackie Aguilera
ReplyDeleteWe as humans never truly think about what we are. You took a simple idea and made me rethink what it truly means to be human. Your use of syntax and repetition helped develop your piece. Overall very good! -Ellie
ReplyDeleteI love the way this piece was started with the definiton of what its suppose to mean to be human and allowing us to be imperfect as that is what a human is suppose to be.You were able to tie facts an opinion perfectly into one piece.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed how well written this peace was. I especially liked how it started with the edictionary definition. The revelation that all of our own unique differences are what unites us was a solid point that if more people understood we would be able to unite ourselves even more.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you started off your piece with a very literal definition of what it means to be " human " and then concluding it with the importance of being unique and being true to who you are. I feel like this piece is really relevant in today's society because people often judge others because they aren't "normal" or like everyone else. My favorite line is when you said, "Being imperfect, being flawed, being emotional, being loved, sad, hated, praised, unappreciated, feeling hope, serenity, and so on and so forth are all what it means to be human." Overall, amazing writing! - Lauren Valencia
ReplyDeleteThe way you explained and described what it is to be human on a person level other than what the dictionary defines us is great, the way you started and finished with the definition tied the piece together go well it make me think about how I see myself as human. -James Torres
ReplyDeleteTruly, truly, truly an exceptional piece of work right here! I love the way that you set up the tone at the beginning of the essay, your transition into how the dictionary defines us to how we define one another and then on how we are actually defined as humans based on our experiences. It creates a social harmony into understanding one another to explain that we all go through situations which shape us into human beings.
ReplyDeleteThe development of your essay of explaining the complexities of humans despite the definition of it. Your insight was very real and you didn't scare away from the harsh part of humans. Your choice of words and sentence structure made the flow of your piece wanting to read more and interesting. I loved it!
ReplyDeleteThrough the use of the word "human," this piece shows the true meaning of what it means to be a person. Both the beginning and ending of this piece tie to the overall meaning of this piece which is very well written.
ReplyDeleteYou were very understanding and showed how you don't have to have a certain definition of what it means to be a human and describing the traits that we contain, getting into depth
ReplyDeleteYou're uncertain, yet open-minded views, give the reader a range of perspective as well. Clearly, your values on emotions are important to you, as they should be. You have a grip on your own definition of what being human means to you, despite it not being one that everyone gravitates towards, thus why I'd call the tone somewhat 'uncertain ', yet relatable. As a reader, I thoroughly enjoyed your views on this topic, and can also relate to such the deeper meaning on what a ' human ' should represent.
ReplyDeleteThis piece really speaks to the reader. It was very creative and well constructed. Giving the dictionary definition and then elaborating to a definition that will touch the soul of others was perfect!
ReplyDeleteI think that is always arguable about what we are as humans. People see it as many ways of us showing emotions, but that may not be true as some people don't show emotion and lack in emotion, they never cared to have relationships with people thus cared for themselves. The fact that you said how our personality is, is what makes us human since we are all flawed and have our ups and downs. You precisely stated what human was, but in fact might be more then to "just" being human as what people might not take in and effectively think of, as we go about our daily lives and don't see the human in others, what makes them who they are and unique. Like it's been said thats what makes you human, what I do shouldn't be valued as a term of human, I'm a somebody as we might all be differently. Love the thought you put into it.
