Hate, Happiness, and Hope--Erika

What is happiness? Maybe it was your first Disneyland trip when you were five, maybe it was when you received your first phone, or maybe it was when your crush in 7th grade admitted she/he liked you. All of these events have something in common, you're gaining something for yourself. When did happiness turn into something tangible? Whatever happened to when coming home after school was the happiest thing in the world? You could play outside or spend time with your family. Although now going “home” is not always the better option. For me, I love being at home, it's my safe place and where I feel most comfortable. Although, school on the other hand,it is not my most favorite place to be but, I still have to come and do my work. The sad thing is, walking through the halls shouldn’t feel like the most judgmental place to be. This is because most happiness is taken from us, by other human beings. It shouldn't be fair that one other body can control your emotions or have that power over you. We let those who hold a higher position, whether that be popularity or another form of social ranking have control over what we feel we can or cannot do. Who gave that person the permission to take away your happiness? We were put on this earth to serve ourselves and others with caring compassionate hands. There is an entire world out there and a universe in you. Therefore, I challenge you to take back your happiness, grab control over it, don’t care what others think and definitely don’t let someone else determine your fate. As aristotle said, "Happiness depends upon ourselves." It is so simple to not give that girl you “don’t like” a dirty look, pick up someone else’s trash, hug your mom, admit when you're wrong, apologize, say please and thank you, just be decent humans. It takes more energy to ruin someone's day by being hurtful than to not bother them at all. I’m not saying everyone or even you are a bad person, but it doesn’t hurt to take a step back and examine your past. I’m also not saying that I am perfect, because who is? Literally, EVERYONE makes mistakes, and trying to fix those is always a good idea, second chances are given. So, spend time with your family, because time is limited and should be cherished at all cost especially with those you love. Having compassion for others spreads like a disease, but like everything in this world there is always an evil to go hand in hand along with the good. In my opinion the goal of life is to reach divine happiness in whatever you’re doing, and then continue to spread that to others. As I mentioned earlier, there is an entire world out there, you can do anything to get away from toxic relationships and go exploring for your happiness.

So, be good to people, and let that goodness shine in your soul.

  1. I agree with you on so many points, Erica! I believe that happiness shouldn’t be something that is determined by other people. We should be able to happy no matter what life throws our way. The school passing period honestly does feel like the most judgmental place. We’re all here for the same reason so why can we just all be friends?

  2. Erika, I don't know who is taking your happiness but I hope you know that whoever it is is obviously jealous and intimidated. Not to sound creepy, but I know that whenever I see you in the halls, I always think your outfit and hair are super cute. You always look so put together and confident, so to know that you don't always feel comfortable at school is reassuring and relatable because I now know that everyone feels a little out of place sometimes and it's not just me. Thank you for being so open and for stating the obvious, we do need to be kinder to one another. Like my grandma says, "None of us are getting out of here alive, so might as well live our best lives and make the most of them."

  3. I really enjoyed reading this because I agree that our happiness should not stem from someone else's opinion or judgement of us. I'm glad you mentioned the fact that school hallways have become such a judgmental place, I hadn't realized that until now. Thank you for the reminder that only we can give ourselves permission to be happy.

  4. I enjoyed your piece a lot. I thought it was very meaningful and I really liked the point you made about it taking more energy to ruin someone's day then it does when you moved forward and not bothering them at all.

  5. This was an amazing piece, I was able to reflect and realize how much easier and better you feel when you just treat people right. I know that it seems very cliche however, the saying treat people the way you would want to be treated is so true. Life is to short to have so much built up anger and hate, I appreciate the motivation included on taking back my happiness and not caring about what others may think.

  6. you are completely right, every point is phenomenal. happiness is not easy to define as it is different for everyone, but as you describe outside forces make us question where we find our happiness. This peace helps to self reflect and realize what makes you genuinely happy, not the fake smiles you use as you pass through the halls.

  7. Your piece is extremely eye opening as many people do not realize how material possessions have assumed the role of happiness and achievement. I think it is sad how many of us go from sheer joy of just being able to go to a park as a child, to only being happy whenever we can afford to go to a better amusement park. The overall contrasting view presented in the beginning combined with your smooth syntax helps any reader begin to questions his/her self about what makes them happy. Furthermore, I feel that the parallelism between the whole hatred and happiness ideas really help to emphasize the overall meaning of the words you wrote.

  8. That's Right. I don't have much to say other than That's Right- you say it all yourself. Don't let others get you down, life's too short for that. Keep at it, and keep your head held high, because nobody can take down but you.

  9. WOW. I really felt this piece! This popped off (In a good way)! First of all, not to sound like a weirdo but I really admire your confidence and the way you carry yourself and wish I could be like that! I know everyone talks about wanting to feel happy or attaches 'happiness' to material possessions or other human beings but I really like how you specified with that quote from Aristotle that happiness depends upon ourselves. I think it's funny that we live in such a toxic society that teaches us to never focus on ourselves unless we're focusing on the negative but you're saying 'no' that we should recognize where and when we feel completely confident, comfortable, happy, and spread that to others. I think it's important that you stressed no one is perfect and that 'EVERYONE' makes mistakes because I feel that it was so assuring and motivating. Overall, good job!!! Made my day!

  11. Simply marvelous. You gave a meaningful insight on happiness and I was personally moved by it. Happiness is so mysterious; it takes on many different forms and yield different results in each individual on this planet. I'm a fan of insights like these and you should definitely give more insights on topics similar to this. Lastly, I appreciate you quoting Aristotle to give your insight more power. Keep your head up and stay happy my friend! Those close to you are the ones you will always hold dearest.

  12. Erika, this is such an amazing piece of work that you've done! This is something most people would forget these days, especially to those who are stressed and forget to be happy and to have hope. Your piece reminded that there is more out there that has yet to be explored, to spread more positivity, and happiness to others because you never know who needs it.

  13. I've thought about the same thing sometimes how going to school is the scariest thing or how mean people can be and not always on purpose but I enjoy the way you brought it to life not in the question of being good but rather questioning someone's happiness from making those choices. I also am glad to see how you impose your own ability to try to spread this happiness by posing a question to your readers overall a good eye opening read.

  16. I really enjoyed this because I could relate to feeling that sometimes school can be a stressful and difficult place to be. Your piece was really descriptive and I loved how you didn't only talk about why you didn't feel happy there, but also a way that it could become a less toxic place by saying that we all could be more caring towards each other because it brings a whole other side to your story and like your title says brings hope for the problem to change. -Stephanie

I really enjoyed reading this piece. Everything you said was true and really captivated me into reading your piece. I agree that true happiness is found within yourself and not through others. I appreciate you writing about this topic because it really has the power to touch someone.

  18. What a great piece! You are absolutely correct! I totally resonated with Aristotle's quote of "Happiness depends upon ourselves". Although we might not be able to change our circumstances, the only person we have control of is our self. I loved how this piece reiterates how a simple mind set change can drastically turn your bad day into a positive one! Great Job!

  20. Life can be cruel, but it's up to us to stand up to it as much as possible and spread more love rather than hate. We should learn to be more kind because generally, as a species, we all have some good in us, it's just that people live through different circumstances, so sometimes kindness doesn't really exist that much in their world. That's why it's up to us to spread positivity so people can learn to be more humane towards one another because we are all going through a struggle.

  23. I absolutely loved this because I was able to relate the text to myself. I really like how incorporated the sense of hope allowing others to not feel alone in times of distress and allowing one to feel strong at their low points. This short story defiantly made me smile as it reminds me to admire my self being and not allow others to control me or control others. So thank you :)

  24. The reflection upon what was our source of happiness vs what we now rely on to give us happiness adds a brilliant layer to this story. It's frankly just a message we all need to hear right now :)

  25. I loved this blog so much, it really made my day and made me realize that time is too limited to not be happy and cherish moments with those you love. As busy as we are now, we still must not forget to have fun and do things that make us feel alive. This truly inspires me to appreciate the people I have in my life and to spread positivity instead of complaining so much because...I have to admit, I complain wayyyy too much. One line that stood out to me was, "We were put on this earth to serve ourselves..." that really affected me in a way as I am always too harsh on myself whenever something doesn't go my way. Thank you for sharing this with us :)

  26. SAME! I can totally get down with this piece. Once upon a time, people an their thoughts was the scariest thing to me. Sometimes they can still get to me at school, but I don't let them stop me from being me. I still try to make others happy but I don't let them control whether I am. This was really awesome;)

  27. This piece is truly powerful! Happiness is something that everyone would push mountains aside for, walk a barren dessert for, die for. However, your piece shows us that happiness often lies right in front of our eyes. I particularly enjoyed the portion about not letting anyone strip us of our own happiness as it is ours and only ours. Of course, monumental figures in our lives will assist us in our search for happiness, but ultimately it is us who must remain tenacious to it.

    Thank you for your words.

  28. I love this commentary about the state of happiness. It's kinda hard to be happy when it seems like others are trying to control your emotions. The truth of the matter is that happiness is only obtainable within ourselves and at the end of the day the only one who can try ensure our happiness is ourselves. Most people, like myself, forget about that oddly sad truth. I spend so much time making others happy that I can't seem to make myself happy.

  29. I absolutely love ed your piece! I can totally relate to home being my personal safe place it just brings so much comfort and security. People don't really notice how much their words can actually affect someone else. Just because something doesn't offend you doesn't mean its not going to offend someone else. Great piece! :)-Jazmine Hernandez

  32. This was amazing, and sort of a wake up call for people to make their one life they have the best one. it's so easy to lose yourself in society and social norms, that sometimes it's hard to even recognize yourself, and it's because you've been robbed of your happiness. This piece really speaks volumes, and I really enjoyed it. It opened my eyes to do more and do it better, and having a reminder once in a while to smile or make someone else smile, than the other way around is super healthy, so thank you for this piece.

  36. Erika,

This post is absolutely inspiring! I feel that more people have to read it, because it could help them to find themselves. And I totally agree with your statements about happiness, and that sometimes we forget about how our help to others can make us more happier as well.

  37. I totally agree with you on this, your happiness is affected by other people. They can give or take away your happiness and you can do the same to other, so if someone is being mean with you, there is no point in getting upset because someone could have taken their happiness away and they now want to do the same to someone else. So I agree, there is a lot more to gain in being nice, for you and those around you.

  40. I really enjoyed reading this blog and the reason i decided to take my time and comment on this is because i completely understand and agree. You brought up good points that most of society has dismissed. I also liked how you started off your blog with the question "What is happiness." As you addressed, many people determine their happiness based off of other people's opinions but it shouldn't be that way. This is something i wish so many people could read. Thank you for spreading love and positivity in this piece. - Brianna Villanueva P.5
