Good or Bad?--Talissa

What makes something or someone good or bad? How are we able to decipher the difference between the two? From a young age we were always told by our parents and our elders what was good and bad. From there we would just trust their words for it, and make the best choices we thought were right. We’d also learn from story books, how there was always the hero which would be considered good, and then there would be the villain or the bad person, based on their actions we also learned to decipher between the two, and we learn from experiences in life by interacting with others and learning as we go but, in reality though it's not as simple as good and bad there is much more to it, I believe that there is a grey area between the two.

If we were to look up what the definition of good is it would say something along the lines of something that is favorable and likeable. Then with the definition of bad it would say something that is unfavorable and that its unacceptable, but who set up these standards? I feel that you can’t make a decision so easily in order to deem someone bad, for example because every single person has done something that would be considered bad and they’ve done things that are good. So to base your decision on one mere situation is completely outrageous because you have to get to know the person, it's just like the saying to never judge a book by its cover, because who knows you might be surprised what you end up finding in the end. It's also important to remember that some people can change over time for example you can think that they might be a bad person but as you get to know them it might turn out that they are actually a really good person.

When it comes to deciding whether or not something is good or bad it's a different story because I feel it's a bit more simpler then making a decision about a person because there are many instances where you don’t have to try something in order to ultimately come to a conclusion. This is because chances are someone else has tried this same thing and you can see what the results were for them, from there you can decide for yourself whether you think it's good or bad. You could also just experience it for yourself and come to a conclusion on your own without the influence of others.

In the end it's ultimately you who decides what is right or wrong whether it be that you go through your own life experiences or you learn from what other experiences the people around you have gone through. It's important to remember that good and bad is not just one sided but in fact it has many different sides to it and it's great to keep an open mind about everything.

  1. Hey Talissa, I really liked this! I completely agree too. I think that we don't truly know who's right or wrong because everyone has different experiences, so for a single person to determine who is good or bad. Great Job! - Mary Ojo

  2. I found it very interesting how you mentioned the definitions of “good” and “bad” and then posed the question as to who sets up the standard of whether or not an action, comment, etc. should be likeable or agreeable. I’d never thought of it that way before. I enjoyed the comparison between the saying, “never judge a book by its cover,” because it is something many have heard before and supposedly adhere to. Also, it could provoke thought as to whether they are hypocrites or not based on how you connected it, which I think gives your piece a lot of power. I also thought it was helpful and eye-opening to read that we ultimately get to make our own judgements on what is good or bad because I feel that now, people usually tend to conform to original opinions, which is why we sadly see much discrimination today. Thank you for sharing!

  3. This was really well written :) I also often think about the definitions between good and bad. They're such subjective things. No two people will have the same opinion because everyone grew up in a different environment with different beliefs and morals, so I completely agree with you (that it's ultimately you who decides what is right or wrong through your own life experiences).

  4. I really enjoyed your perspective and agree with you how good and bad has a grey area and is based on our preconceived ideas and personal experiences that makes it hard to differentiate. -Ruby Treto

  5. Hi Talissa! I really liked your piece! I think it has a very important message because so many people would choose to write off a person as good or bad without consideration, refusing to see the the grey area. Like you said, there are so many shades in between being purely "good" or purely "bad" because if you don't truly know a person or their story, you can't begin to understand what kind of person they really are. Overall, this was a great piece!

  6. I really enjoyed reading your piece and the use of diction you used. I think good and bad has a different meaning to everyone and like you said it has a grey area. In reality I think you are the only one who can decide whats good and bad because at the end of the day, you are the one who has to deal with the consequences. - Valerie Rivera

  7. Great job! I totally agree that "good" and "bad" are subjective, but then I always wonder where morals come into play. I guess that also begs the question are "morals subjective too?" This topic is one that I feel people can argue about for hours because there's so many layers to it. I love how you touched on the "grey area" between good and bad, and I really loved your piece!- Somi Nebedum

  8. I always think its such a unique thing that no one knows what is/who is good or bad. It is a subjective topic. We are the ones who decide whats good or bad as we define everything. Our experiences and ideas define what we think is good or bad for us. I totally agree with you. - Arnav Singh

  16. Hi Talissa! I really enjoyed your connection to how as little kids we were always told the good from bad and then went on to discuss the grey area on the scale. I truly enjoyed the ending where you explained right and wrong is decided through your own life experiences because at the end of the day, something could seem right for one person but horrible for the other. 17. This is a really good writing piece. I have to agree with your statements, I think that we don't truly know what is good or bad. Everyone has a different standards of their morality. Some people may thing something is morally correct and some people may think that same thing is morally incorrect.

  18. I totally agree!! “Good”or “bad” is all about perspective and what morals we were taught to value through our life experience. It's completely subjective. Which is why, like you said, It's really important to be open minded and unbiased before deeming something to be right or wrong. I love this perspective! This piece is really “good.” Haha! -Arianna Perez

  19. I really like this take! Good, bad, like, unlike, right, wrong, all of these words are completely subjective. I like to think about this from time to time regarding the future, as maybe one day what we see as morally correct, the next generation will perceive as completely wrong or vice versa. Thank you so much for sharing!

  20. I really enjoyed is piece. You made a really good points on this topic, each of us classify some as a good or bad person by what our friends think, but not what see think. We need to learn to give people a chance to show you who there really are and not judge them from what others think of them. -Chinaza Obi

  21. This was so well written! I agree with the fact that simply labeling something/someone as good or bad can be very difficult, since both terms are subjective and are dependent on a person's own personal feelings and past experiences. Not everyone will agree with the definitions of the two words, and your perspective really opened my eyes! Good job :) - Angelique Maylad

  22. I agree on how us individually get to decide what we think is right or wrong and how we should experience that persons personality in person and actually get to know them before assuming.

  24. I like how you brought up the idea of not judging a book by it cover which is so important in today society. Now more than ever we practice "cancel culture" and judge based off of one mistake. You also mentioned how "good" and "bad" needs to be looked at different angles and I totally agree with what you're saying. Great job!

  27. Hey Talissa, I have to agree with your argument. There really is no such thing as simply good or bad like not everything is black and white; instead, everything is in different shades of grey like you said. Plus, people's perception of good and bad changes depending on their environment, experiences, and what influenced them as their growing up. Also, good job writing down your idea and potentially persuading people to agree with you.

  28. I definitely agree with your perspective on this. Sometimes we are so influenced by the opinion of others that we forget to actually take into consideration our own opinion & to essentially not judge a book by its cover or by what society views it as. Great job Talissa - destinye jones
